1906

1906 Grace Hospital opens for business on King Street.

1908

The hospital was incorporated in 1908 by Doctor Phifer and the Hughsons.

1913

Joseph Grayson Brothers was born in Wilmington, N.C., on May 11, 1913.

1917

1917 By 1917, Grace is the only general hospital in North Carolina providing treatment for tuberculosis patients in separate pavilion.

1924

1924 In 1924, Mary Hughson, 66, dies after guiding the hospital for 16 years.

1929

In September 1929, officials had just celebrated laying the corner stone and dedicating the new hospital building. “It was a day of crowning glory in the history of the institution and will remain in the minds of those taking part as a day of great blessing.”

1937

1937 First full time administrator, Mr.

1953

1953 J. Grayson Brothers begins his 25-year tenure as Grace’s administrator.

1955

The first patient, a child who was to have a tonsillectomy, was admitted in December 1955.

The hospital opened its doors in 1955.

1962

When President John Kennedy signed the Migrant Health Act into law in 1962, the Migrant Health Center could receive federal funds.

1963

Opened in 1963, Blue Ridge Health has its roots in providing migrant farmworkers with healthcare.

1976

Grayson Brothers died in 1976.

1987

In 1987, The Migrant Health Center evolved to become Blue Ridge Community Health Services (BRCHS) – a year-round health center open to the entire community.

1993

In 1993, BRCHS opened the first school-based health center (SBHC) in Henderson County, providing students access to comprehensive nursing, medical, behavioral health, and nutrition services.

1998

1998 In December 1998, the Grace Hospital Board of Directors enters an agreement with Valdese Hospital and Carolinas HealthCare System to form a new operating company, Blue Ridge HealthCare.

The two organizations have developed a close, interactive relationship since 1998.

2008

In 2008, three additional SBHCs opened at two elementary schools, and a high school, providing healthcare for over 2,000 students.

2012

In October 2012, BRCHS opened a second health center in Transylvania County.

2013

2013 Kathy C. Bailey is named President and CEO, the first woman to head the organization since Mrs.

2014

Two additional sites – one in Rutherford County and the other in Buncombe county – were opened in 2014.
