Job Description Blythe Development, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, is a licensed general contractor specializing in site work, road construction and golf course construction in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Blythe Development's operations include clearing, grading, storm drainage, sanitary sewer, waterline, curb and gutter, sidewalk, concrete paving, retaining walls, culverts, bridges, stone base and asphalt paving. Blythe Brothers Asphalt Company provides the asphalt services for Blythe Development Co. Blythe Development employs over 900 employees. This large, experienced workforce enables Blythe Development to self-perform 80% of site groundwork, which gives them greater control than competitors who must subcontract the bulk of the job. Blythe Brothers Asphalt is currently looking for a Roadway Quality Control Technician to join our growing team. The Roadway Quality Control Technician is responsible for monitoring all paving operations to ensure that the asphalt product being placed meets all contract specifications. The roadway quality technician must work and coordinate with paving personnel and project inspectors to ensure that contract specifications are being met. Once the paving work is completed, the roadway quality control technician is responsible for obtaining core sample specimens from the roadway and delivering them to the quality control laboratory for density testing. Excellent record keeping skills and being able to communicate effectively is a must for this position. This position will require availability from the candidate to work both day and night shifts, as well as weekends. Typical hours range from 40 to 70+ hours per week. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Knowledge of proper use of equipment, hand and power tools, materials and supplies used in highway and heavy construction work in a safe manner to minimize the risk of injury, property damage or loss of life. Knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions. Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks according to work schedule. Physical Demands Regularly works near moving machinery/tools which requires good manual dexterity and multi-limb coordination, must be able to move quickly and have excellent stamina. Must be able to lift, push, pull or carry objects (over 80 lbs.), use legs, hips, shoulders, abdominal and lower back muscles to provide support over time without fatigue. This position will require the technician lift a core saw from the bed of a pickup truck and place it on the asphalt. This saw weighs approximately 80 lbs. Must be able to stand and/or walk for long periods of time and climb a ladder. This position will require the candidate to stand on hot asphalt mat for long periods of time. Ability to pass certification exams for a Roadway Quality Technician Certification in both NC and SC, training will be provided for the exams. All required tools (excluding a pickup truck) are provided. Responsibilities: Reports directly to either the Chief of Estimating or to the Director of Estimating. Senior Estimator is responsible for working towards the annual booking goal, understanding backlog needs, and working to maximize profitability. The Senior Estimator will prepare complete estimates for assigned project(s) of varying size and complexity, for one or more disciplines, including the determination of applicable project plans and specifications. The Senior Estimator will be part of a team environment and may work with team members based on bid needs. The Senior Estimator will participate in business development, industry events, and building customer relations, while conducting business in a professional manner, striving for team excellence, and emphasizing Faulconer's Core Values at all times. Primary Job Duties: Estimator's job duties include but are not limited to the following list below. Process Management: 10% Prepare and be responsible for Hand-Off Meetings with Project Managers & Field Staff Participate in project “Kick-Off” meetings with Operations Staff Participate in Post Project Review Meetings with Operations Staff Coordinate, supervise, and review work of assigned department personnel to ensure accuracy and completeness. Operational Management: 90% Ensure In-House Procedures are being Followed (Bid Books, Take-Off Forms, Sub/Supplier Solicitation, Minority Solicitation, Etc.) May assist the Chief Estimator in coordination of overall corporate estimating functions, including staff training. Assign work to subordinates, direct and review their assignments, and be responsible for accuracy and completeness of estimates prepared by subordinates. Review, discuss and incorporate similar past project knowledge, i.e safety concerns, productions, crew sizes, job costs into current job cost analysis. Review proposal specifications, drawings and geotechnical information, labor and material requirements, prepare itemized lists, and attend pre-bid meetings to determine scope of work and contents of estimate. Prepare estimates by calculating complete takeoff of scope of work. Determine cost effectiveness. Accurately quantify and price the labor, equipment, materials and subcontractors needed to perform the work. Write detailed scopes of work including pertinent terms and conditions, inclusions and exclusions for bid proposals. Interface with Owners and Architects/Engineers to provide necessary price, proposal and value management information. Follow up on submitted proposals and be prepared to discuss in weekly estimating meeting. Support Operations Staff as required Maintain knowledge of relevant software, i.e. takeoff, estimate/bid creation, scheduling, subcontractor solicitation, office management Research future opportunities and projects. Attend relevant industry events and participate in business development with Owners, Architects/Engineers, vendors and other contractors. When feasible, visit current project sites to obtain knowledge of productions and means and methods of construction activities utilized by field personnel. Qualifications: 5 to 8 years direct work experience in an estimating capacity, including all aspects of a bid preparation. Thorough knowledge of company procedures and estimating techniques. Ability to estimate all types of projects/contracts, plus ability to coordinate and supervise group work effort essential. Willingness and ability to occasionally work long hours to finalize a bid. Ability to work in front of a computer for long periods of time. Ability to travel to prebid meetings/site visits. Exemplary verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Willingness to learn and adapt to change. Ability to effectively prioritize and execute tasks in a high-pressure environment. Strong math skills. Reports To: Area Manager or Senior Project Manager The Project Manager is responsible for executing assigned projects from initial meetings through final project completion. The Project Manager is responsible for keeping projects safe, on time, and on budget while emphasizing quality, project planning, and setting and achieving goals. General Description The Excavator Operator will work in close proximity to equipment and people and operate an excavator to remove materials in a safe manner. * Operate a excavator in close proximity to equipment and the public safely. * Perform daily fluid level checks on oil, water and fuel; Visual inspection for obvious leaks and damage to machine before operation of equipment as well as safety equipment checks. * Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order. General Description A Dozer Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below. A Dozer Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the Dozer. The Dozer Operator levels and scoops soil and controls the direction and angle of the equipment to move rocks and debris. General Description The Electrical Maintenance Technician will be responsible for the installation, troubleshooting and maintenance of electrical components within asphalt plants and aggregate crushing facilities. * Installation, troubleshooting, and maintaining PLC's, HMI interfaces, motors, drives, other electrical components. * Test and repair of various electrical equipment. * Assist in facility startup and new equipment installations. * Involvement in the planning and execution of new wiring installations or upgrades. * Work with facility staff and mechanical department to create more operator friendly and robust systems. * Ability to effectively work within and maintain company safety standards and policies. * Other duties as assigned Qualification Requirements * General. General Description Performs traffic control duties in concurrence with MOT and construction crews. Asphalt Distributor Operator General Description An Asphalt Distributor Operator is an hourly-rated skilled craft position that performs on construction projects any combination of the duties described more fully, below. An Asphalt Distributor Operator typically performs a wide variety of tasks, transferring from one task to another as the work flow dictates. An Asphalt Distributor Operator consists of operating an asphalt distributor by applying specialize emulsions and/or liquid AC to roadways. Key Duties * Understand and execute paving procedures while following instructions to meet the standards of the project * Commercial Driver License (CDL) A or B with N-tanker & X-hazmat endorsement as well as an acceptable driving record * Drives and operates distributor truck equipped with tank to spray asphalt emulsions and/or liquid AC on road surfaces * Connects hose from storage tank to truck tank and moves lever to fill tank with asphalt liquids * Regulate burner to heat liquid and start auxiliary pump * Snap or screw on spray bars to attain required width of spray * Turn valve to regulate flow of material at specified rate and adjust levers to adjust height of spray bar from road surface * Monitor flow gages, tachometer and temperature gauge to insure uniform distribution * Perform daily safety checks of fluid levels on oil, water, fuel and inspections for leaks and damage to machine before operation * Responsible for daily maintenance of equipment to remain in proper and safe working order * Responsible for notifying supervisor if equipment needs to be repaired * Understand and execute different emulsions and/or liquid AC * Shifts may vary according to project demands * Perform incidental work items and duties included within other crafts Qualification Requirements * General. General Description An Asphalt Plant Operator is responsible for start-up and operation of hot mix asphalt mixing plants. Process involves placing raw aggregate and liquid asphalt materials through the mixing drum to be stored in silos until ready for load-out on trucks for delivery to job sites. General Description The Construction Engineer is an entry level engineering position in the heavy highway/civil and site development fields of construction. The Construction Engineer will report to the Project Engineer on a jobsite. * Produce labor and equipment cost reports to monitor production costs, drive billing, budgets and costs to complete. * Produce daily, weekly and monthly quantities to monitor production, drive management reports and reconcile owner quantities using Excel and SAP. * Assists Field Engineer and Project Engineer in updating project schedule in P6. * Initiates purchase orders, shop drawings, submittals and material deliveries. * Prepare the forecasted final cost reports; Bi-monthly accumulation of costs and quantities for comparison of an as-bid to as-built. Report in SAP format for corporate presentation. * Submittals - Developing and tracking. * Drafting - Field sketches, interpreting contract drawings for use in the field. * Daily Logs - gather and compile daily diaries to include photo log. * Maintain Excel Tracking Logs - Change Orders, RFI's and Claims. * Produced meeting minutes during construction meetings. * Assist in the Preparation of monthly cost and revenue projections, for materials, equipment and labor in Excel. * Prepare and reconcile owner pay requisitions. * Prepare vendor and subcontractors pay requisitions. * Prepare and monitor CPM schedule for project, utilizing P6 Scheduling Software. * Management of quantities in SAP cost control program. * Help to ensure that project construction conforms to design specifications and applicable North Carolina/South Carolina codes * Evaluate preconstruction field conditions * Must have good written and oral communication skills.
