1996

The Surface Transportation Board, successor to the ICC, approved the UP-SP merger on July 3, and UP control of SP took effect on September 11, 1996.

In late 2009 Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway announced plans to acquire a majority stock ownership in BNSF, essentially making the railroad a privately-owned corporation (a rarity in the industry where most large systems are publicly traded).

2010

On February 12, 2010, Burlington Northern Santa Fe, LLC (formerly known as Burlington Northern Santa Fe Corporation) and BNSF Railway Company became subsidiaries of Berkshire Hathaway Inc.

The acquisition was approved by the boards of both companies and was approved by BNSF shareholders on February 12, 2010.

2015

It is by far the busiest line on the system, providing 16.4 million of Metra’s 81.6 million passenger trips in 2015. (The UP-NW was second, with 11.3 million trips.)
