Bodum company history timeline

1958

What is arguably the most popular design was patented by the Swiss man Faliero Bondanini in 1958 and this brewer was known in France, where it was manufactured, as a ‘Chambord’. The popularity of the Chambord in France is what also gave the cafetiére its French identity.

1960

The founder succeeded in positioning BODUM® internationally already in the 1960’s owing to his unique concept: development of products, which consistently pay tribute to functionality, quality and affordability.

1967

During the sixties, Bodum faced a steady growth, but unfortunately, in 1967, at the age of just 57, the founder Peter Bodum passed away.

1974

His wife managed the company the following years and in 1974 she decide to invite Joergen – her 26-year-old son to join her in the company management.

1978

1978: The company home office is relocated to Switzerland.

1980

In 1980, Bodum were founded in Switzerland.

1980: BODUM®’s design unit, Pi-Design AG is established.

Bodum released a new Jorgensen design in 1980, a line of cutlery based on the Bistro design.

1981

1981: The company launches the Osiris water kettle as part of a diversification of its product line.

1982

ORDNING&REDA® is a Swedish company founded in 1982 that designs, produces and sells a range of high quality notepads, bags and other accessories.

1986

1986: BODUM® opens its first shop in London designed not only to showcase the large variety of BODUM® products but to embody BODUM®’s growing presence as an international brand.

1991

1991: The now iconic ASSAM teapot is developed for the British Tea Council.

1993

In 1993, the company unveiled a new design family, Kenya, which included a French-press type coffee maker and accompanying coffee mugs.

1999

Preparing for the new millennium, Bodum remained a strong force in tabletop design, releasing such products as the Eileen series of coffee glasses in 1999 and the Piccolo Passione espresso cup and saucer set.

2001

Bodum's sales in 2001 were estimated to be CHF 200 million.

2003

2003: Swedish stationer ORDNING&REDA® becomes part of BODUM® Group, with franchise shops in 15 countries offering an assortment of stylish notebooks, diaries, cards, photo albums, stationery, pens, pencils, boxes, bags, and accessories.

2010

2010: BODUM® introduces e-BODUM®, a line of electric kitchen tools.

2011

2011: BODUM® opens first “lab” shop in Paris featuring product demonstrations and multi-media presentations to give shoppers hands-on time with BODUM®’s growing product assortment.

2012

Bodum has tried to register “French Press” as a trademark in several territories, but failed in the U.S, and had the trademark removed in Canada in December 2012.

2016

As of 2016, BODUM® products are sold in 55 countries with 7 dedicated BODUM® stores, and many more shop-in-shops, outlet stores, and sales points around the world.
