Usually, boiler operators don't need a college education. The most common degree for boiler operators is high school diploma with 36% graduates, with only 23% boiler operator graduates earning associate degree. Boiler operators who decided to graduate from college often finish Maine Maritime Academy or Henry Ford College. Some good skills to have in this position include preventive maintenance, air compressors and boiler room.

Popular boiler operator certifications include EPA Amusement Operators Safety Certification (EPA), OSHA Safety Certificate , or Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator (CIRO).
