Bolingbrook Park District company history timeline

1970

Established by its residents in 1970, the Bolingbrook Park District has a history of consistent growth, excellence in programs and services and both state and national acclaim.

1970 Park District created by successful referendum.

1972

1972 Passed $2.2 million referendum for land acquisition and development.

1974

1974 Site for Deatherage Drdak Center acquired.

1975

1975 Acquired Winston Woods – a 42-acre Woodland ($315,000 grant).

1976

1976 Bolingbrook Athletic Council (BAC) formed to coordinate field use and recommend improvements.

1980

1980 $3.4 million referendum for park improvements passes.

1981

With the support of a public referendum the Park District opened Boughton Ridge Golf Course in 1981.

1982

1982 Bolingbrook Aquatic Center opens first indoor wave pool in the United States.

1988

1988 Hidden Lakes was acquired with the aid of Corlands.

1990

Site was eventually purchased in 1990 ($299,500 grant).

1994

1994 Successful $13.5 million referendum for a Recreation Center/Aquatic Complex.

1994 Heritage Park opened.

1999

1999 Grand opening of remodeled and expanded Annerino Community Center.

2001

2001 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park expanded with five new attractions.

2001 Earned National Recreation and Park Association KUDO’s Award as Best Overall Communicator for third year in a row.

2001 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the second consecutive year.

2002

2002 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the third consecutive year.

2002 Lily Cache Sports Fields opened with six (four lighted) soccer fields.

2003

2003 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fourth consecutive year.

2003 Earned National Recreation and Park Association KUDO’s Award as Best Overall Communicator for fourth year in a row.

2003 Completed construction of Bolingbrook’s first skate park at Indian Boundary Park.

2004

2004 Pelican Harbor Indoor/Outdoor Aquatic Park named as “first of four that floats to the top” by Chicago Magazine.

2004 Bolingbrook Park District re-certified as an Illinois Distinguished Agency by the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the Illinois Association of Park Districts.

2004 Successful $15 million referendum to fund land acquisition and park improvements throughout Bolingbrook.

2004 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the fifth consecutive year.

2005

2005 Recognized as one of four finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park Management, Facilities and Programs.

2005 Earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for the sixth consecutive year.

2005 Earned the National Park and Recreation Association’s KUDO’s Award as the Nation’s Best Overall Communicator for an unprecedented 7th year.

2005 Pelican Harbor Indoor Aquatic Park was renovated with new attractions, state-of-the-art Menerga HVAC system to improve air quality, and other upgrades.

2006

2006 Recognized as one of four finalists for the National Gold Medal Award for Excellence in Park Management, Facilities and Programs.

2006 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the seventh consecutive year.

2007

2007 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the eighth consecutive year.

2008

2008 Grand opening of Ashbury’s at Boughton Ridge, the new clubhouse at Boughton Ridge Golf Course.

2008 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the ninth consecutive year.

2009

2009 Grand opening of Hidden Oaks Nature Center, a Platinum LEED Certified facility.

2009 REACH (Recreation Enhances a Child’s Health) Extended Care Program created through a cooperative agreement with Valley View School District 365U.

2010

2010 Hidden Lakes Learning Center was raised and removed.

2010 Bolingbrook Park District’s Facebook page launched.

2010 Earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for ninth year.

2011

2011 Received a $300,000 grant from Illinois Department of Natural Resources for improvements to James S. Boan Woods and the other areas within Hidden Oaks Conservation Area.

2011 Earned the Certificate of Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for tenth year.

2012

2012 DanceForce parent Association received the Illinois Park and Recreation Association Community Service Award.

2012 Received Frank Lloyd Wright Award from the American Institute of Architects for Hidden Oaks Nature Center unique design.

2013

2013 Held Launch event for Lily Cache Special Recreation Association on February 7 with over 250 participants, family members, and officials from Bolingbrook and Plainfield in attendance.

2013 Received Aa2 Bond Rating from Moody’s (the 2nd such bond rating in 2013).

2014

2014 The Foundation for Bolingbrook Parks is formed.

2014 Held the first Winterfest in conjunction with the Fountaindale Public Library out.

2014 Completed renovation of the spa at the Annerino Community Center, converting it to office space for LCSRA. 2014 Completed and approved the update and legal review of the Bolingbrook Park District Full and Part Time Personnel Policy Manuals.

2015

2015 Parkie’s Oasis, the new Spray Playground at Pelican Harbor, was completed and was officially dedicated on opening day, May 23rd.

2015 Bolingbrook Park District launched an Instagram page (@bolingbrookparkdistrict).

2016

2016 KemperSports was approved to manage the operations of Boughton Ridge Golf Course and Ashbury’s.

2016 The Community Garden plots will soon be the home to new raised beds.

2017

2017 Held the first annual Fall Fest community event, replacing Summer’s Last Blast.

2018

A successful $14 million referendum in 2018 proved the residents in Bolingbrook are committed to preserving the quality of facilities in their community.

2018 Completed the Annerino Community Center renovation, creating Human Resources offices.

2019

2019 Received notice of award of a $400,000 OSLAD (matching) grant from the Department of Natural Resources for the development of Century Park.

2019 Completed playground renovations at Lily Cache Greenway, Poplar, Heritage, and Jaycee Parks.

2020

Enhancements to Pelican Harbor with build-out of the lazy river island and addition of family changing rooms in 2020 were welcomed by everyone.

2020 Received the GFOA Excellence in Financial Reporting for the 21st consecutive year.

2020 Bolingbrook Park District celebrates its 50th Anniversary.

2020 Bolingbrook Park District received the APEX Award of Excellence Winner in the Social Media-Facebook Sites category.

2020 The Recreation & Facilities Leadership Team and Supervisor Staff completed the development of the R&F Comprehensive Plan.

2021

The Bolingbrook Recreation & Aquatic Complex Renovation Project was completed in 2021.
