The Cobb County Sheriff's Office is mandated by the Constitution of the State of Georgia and executes a broad range of services which include, but are not limited to: Jail Operations, Court Security, Criminal Warrant Execution, Civil Process Service, Mental Health Transports, Forgery/Fraud Investigation, and Fugitive Investigation and Apprehension.
REQUIRED TESTING:
Physical Agility Test (PAT), Polygraph, Psychological and Medical evaluations are required.
A Physical Agility Test (PAT) will be administered after you apply.
The Physical Agility Test (PAT) consists of the following:
1 3/4 laps around the outside of the course and then enters, following the pattern shown on a map. Candidate must jump two small hurdles, climb a flight of stairs, descend the flight of stairs, go around a cone and continue back up and down the stairs again. The candidate jumps over two more hurdles and must go under a bar that is 2 ½ feet high. If they fail to negotiate the low crawl correctly, there is a two-second time penalty. More running and a leap across a simulated 6-foot gap representing a large ditch. If either foot hits the tape, there is another two second time penalty. The candidate can opt to skip the jump and take the two second time penalty as well. Running back across the floor, the candidate must negotiate a 4-foot-high chain link fence panel, round the cone and run back across the floor. Now the candidate must climb through a standard sized window, which is four feet high, and, once safely through it, drag a 150-pound dummy a distance of 20 feet until the dummy is across the designated line. Finally, one more lap around the outside of the course and they are finished. This must be completed in 2 minutes, six seconds or less.
If PAT is completed, applicants will attend a face-to-face interview with a Recruiter. If selected, the applicant will also need to complete and pass Polygraph, Psychological and Medical evaluations to be recommended for the Command Staff Interview. If selected the applicant will be given a start date.
COMPENSATION
BASE PAY
Entry Level Deputy Sheriff: $54,000 per year (18-month working test period)
Lateral Officer Pay: Lateral entry applicants will be given credit for years of service and placed accordingly in the Step in Grade pay scale.
SHIFT DIFFERENTIAL
* Evening shift deputies receive an additional $0.50/hour
* Overnight shift deputies receive an additional $1.00/hour
* Detention center eligible deputies receive an additional $1.30/hour
EDUCATION INCENTIVE PAY

Provides courtroom security: maintains a security presence in County courtrooms to ensure safety of court personnel, to identify/prevent disturbances of court proceedings, and to identify/prevent potential violence or use of weapons; and assists with courtroom proceedings and documentation process as required.

Transports inmates to/from assigned locations such as courts, jails, detention center, correctional institutions, prisons, medical facilities, regional youth detention centers, or elsewhere as directed: and provides safety and security of inmates during transport.
Serves felony and misdemeanor warrants and civil papers: arrests individuals named in warrants; conducts investigations to determine location/locate individuals named in criminal and civil papers; performs extradition of alleged criminals from other jurisdictions to satisfy open warrants; and executes lunacy or juvenile pickup orders.
Patrols designated areas to detect and deter criminal activity and traffic violations: prevents/discovers commission of crime and traffic violations; responds to calls relayed by dispatchers; apprehends, arrests, and processes criminals, fugitives and offenders; and writes citations. Responds to calls relayed by dispatchers: responds to alarms, domestic disputes, assaults, burglaries, traffic accidents, lost or missing persons searches, rescue operations, public service duties, welfare checks, stranded motorists, or other calls for assistance; conducts preliminary investigations; interviews victims, complainants and witnesses and takes statements; gathers information and evidence; seizes contraband and weapons; preserves evidence until the case is disposed of in a court of law; preserves and secures crime scenes; and takes photographs and prepares crime scene sketches.
Processes incoming detainees, e.g., conducting searches to detect concealed weapons and contraband; processing fingerprinting and identifications cards. Performs security patrol operations, providing monitoring of both inmates and security/fire systems; controls all movement within monitored area and ensures that inmates are safely and securely maintained. Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED and ability to graduate from the POST academy within 18 months required; or any equivalent combination of education, training, and experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this job. JOB SUMMARY:
Performs various duties in law enforcement including patrolling, investigating crimes, securing courtrooms during proceedings, maintaining security over offenders, and assuring all laws of the county and state are carried out in an efficient and effective manner. Deputy Sheriffs assist in emergency situations and must maintain physical ability to effect a forcible arrest or deal with physical, confrontational or combative situations. Deputy Sheriffs perform work in many situations that can be highly dangerous, stressful, and unpredictable. Deputy Sheriffs testify in court as necessary.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Applicants for sworn positions will be required to pass a Physical Agility Test before being hired and annually thereafter.
The course consists of a series of nine interspersed individual tasks, arranged in a continuous format that may be viewed as being essential (physical) job tasks for law enforcement training:
Running, jumping (low hurdle), climbing stairs, Low crawling, Jumping (broad-type), Climbing a fence (chain-link/four feet), Climbing through a window, Moving/dragging a weight (150 lbs.), Changing direction on the run.

When Assigned to Patrol Division:
Take appropriate law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Patrols assigned districts to assure all laws are enforced by checking homes and business for any signs of criminal activity such as broken windows and unlocked doors; arrests any suspects found in the commission of crimes; fills out arrest reports and transports the suspect to the Jail or to mental hospitals on court order.
Answers any calls from the public requesting assistance in burglaries, domestic violence, or any other situation needing the response from law enforcement authorities; writes incident reports on all calls answered indicating the nature of call and any findings at the scene; attends public meetings to maintain order; serves warrants and subpoenas upon court order.
Assists the solicitor and district attorney with case preparation by gathering evidence, assuring the chain of evidence is kept, and testifying in court as necessary.
Responds to motor vehicle accidents in designated areas or assists in other areas as needed; assists EMT's, firefighters, and other emergency personnel; performs first aid/CPR when necessary; completes wreck reports by asking questions of involved parties and any witnesses, gathering all pertinent information and calling wreckers as necessary; provides emotional support to victims at the scene; directs traffic as necessary to prevent further accidents and clean up accident scene; reopens the road when clear.
Maintains traffic safety by stopping unsafe motorists, drunk drivers and speeding vehicles by the use of radar and other detection devices; issues citations or arrests drivers and impounds vehicles as needed; reports any malfunctioning signals or damaged and missing signs.
Helps motorists with mechanical problems or calling wreckers when necessary; gives directions to motorists; removes debris from the roadways; escorts funeral processions, parades, and provides direction during sports events as necessary; directs traffic at school crossings.
Inspects all vehicles used for road safety by checking tire pressure and depth, oil, fuel, and reporting any unusual occurrences to the maintenance personnel and the next shift.

When Assigned to Traffic Unit/DUI Task Force:

When assigned to the Lake Patrol Unit:
Take

law enforcement action as the situation dictates.
Lake Patrol officers will insure the safety of boat operators, enforce the Georgia Safe Boating Act and protect property along the waterways of Hall County. Lake Patrol Officers will enforce State laws, County ordinances, and strive to keep Hall County waterways safe. Officers assigned to Lake Patrol should have operational knowledge of boats, navigational knowledge of Lake Lanier as well as knowledge of boating and boater safety laws.
Conduct Boating Safety Classes.
Attends meetings pertaining to lake related activities, such as Event security, operations planning and emergency/incident water responses.
Works closely with the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, U. S. Army Corp of Engineers U. S. Coast Guard (auxiliary), and other State and federal agencies.
Inspects and maintains boats and equipment assigned to the Lake Patrol Unit.
Daily changes in the Lake level and weather, as well as the seasonal variations in the level of boating activity will directly affect the difficulty of the work.
The work will typically involve the operation of a boat for long periods of time and may require great physical exertion when assisting boaters.
Officers assigned to Lake Patrol will be required to work the vast majority of weekends and holidays during the summer or other times of peak boating traffic on Lake Lanier.
During boat maintenance, lifting of heavy parts and/or equipment in excess of 50lbs may be required.

When assigned to the K-9 Unit:
K-9 Officers paired with dogs must work them in a variety of scenarios, such as searching for explosives, chemicals and other illegal substances. They are also responsible for finding and rescuing individuals that are missing, along with tracking and apprehending fugitives.
Officers paired with dogs must train them extensively and work and work with them in a variety of scenarios. Handlers must make sure their dogs are obedient and follow commands both on and off of the leash, and that they are capable of performing a building search, as well as a search for lost and missing persons and felons. Handlers are also responsible for making sure their dogs are well taken care of. They must clean the kennel, along with ensuring the dog is taken for annual vet visits and any follow up visits.

Such examination shall be administered prior to entrance to the basic course. The law enforcement council may change or modify such examination and shall establish the criteria for determining satisfactory performance on such examination. Peace officers who do not perform satisfactorily on the examination shall be ineligible to retake such examination for a period of six (6) months after an unsuccessful attempt. The provisions of this paragraph establish only the minimum requirements of academy entrance examinations for peace officer candidates in this state; each law enforcement unit is encouraged to provide such additional requirements and any pre-employment examination as it deems necessary and appropriate.
