Duties
During the course of their careers, Secret Service Police carry out assignments in protection. Duties include:
Providing protection for The White House Complex, The Vice President's Residence, The Main Treasury Building and Annex, and foreign diplomatic missions and embassies in the Washington, D.C. area.
Traveling in support of the Presidential, Vice Presidential, and foreign heads of state/government missions.
Enforcing mandated protective responsibilities as described under Title 18, United States Code, Section 3056A.
Requirements
U.S. citizenship is required.
Possess a current valid U.S. driver's license.
Must be at least 21 years old at the time of application and under 40 at referral. Exceptions may apply for those with current or prior service in federal law enforcement positions covered by special retirement provisions. The Secret Service has determined that age is essential to the performance of this position.
Carry and use a firearm. Maintaining firearm proficiency is also mandatory.
Possess uncorrected visual acuity of no worse than 20/100 binocular. Possess corrected visual acuity of 20/20 or better in each eye.
Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 25 decibels (A.S.A. or equivalent I.S.O.) in either ear in the 500, 1000, and 2000 Hz ranges. Applicants must be able to hear the whispered voice at 15 feet with each ear without the use of a hearing aid.
Submit to a drug test prior to your appointment and random drug testing while you occupy the position.
Complete 12 weeks of intensive training at the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA or Artesia, NM and 17 weeks of specialized training at the James J. Rowley Training Center in Laurel, MD.
Certify that you have registered with the Selective Service System or are exempt from having to do so, if you are a male applicant born after December 31, 1959.

1. FRONTLINE NATIONAL EXAMINATION: (qualifying) includes multiple-choice video simulations and computer administered test in which candidates must complete the following three test components: a video-based human relations test, report writing, and reading comprehension. The examination is administered by the National Testing Network. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THE FRONTLINE EXAM UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN E-MAIL STATING THAT YOU MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS. Candidates need a score of 60% or higher on the Video Section, and an overall score of 70% or higher to pass this examination.
The City of Santa Ana is now accepting PELLETB scores from other agencies. The PELLETB exam must have been completed within 6 months of application date in order for scores to be used in lieu of the Frontline National Examination. The minimal acceptable score is 46.
The next three selection components (Physical Agility Exam, Oral Interview Examination and Background Orientation) are all consolidated in one full day of testing.
2. PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM: (qualifying) will evaluate each applicant's physical strength, agility and endurance in the following timed components:
* 1.5 MILE RUN The 1.5 mile run must be completed within 14 minutes to pass the City of Santa Ana physical agility test.
* 500 YARD RUN Run 500 yards
* SOLID FENCE CLIMB Run 5 yards to a 6-foot solid fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards
* CHAIN LINK FENCE Run 5 yards to a 6-foot chain link fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards
* OBSTACLE COURSE/AGILITY RUN Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb-height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle
* BODY DRAG Lift and drag 165 pound lifelike dummy 32 feet
* Some components may be waived
Each of the above events are timed. Candidate's performance times are converted to points and summed. Candidates must successfully complete the 1.5 mile run AND accumulate a minimum total score of 384 points in the remaining five events to pass the physical agility test.

Major Duties

POLICE OFFICER SALARY AND BENEFITS:
The salary for Police Officer is $7,586 - $10,117 per month, plus very generous benefits and salary incentives.
Retirement Benefits
An employee who is a Classic member of CalPERS or a current member of another California public retirement system who is hired on or after January 1, 2013, will be enrolled in the CalPERS 3.0% @ age 50 benefit formula with one year final compensation. Employees contribute 12.0% of salary on a pre-tax basis as their full share of their member contribution. Employees do not pay into Social Security.
Effective January 1, 2013, newly hired sworn employees who are new CalPERS members, as defined by the Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA), will be enrolled in the CalPERS 2.7% at age 57 defined benefit plan with three year final compensation, in accordance with Public Employees' Pension Reform Act of 2013 (PEPRA). Other Benefits
Orange Police Officers work a 3/12 schedule for Patrol Officers and a 4/10 schedule for all special assignments. Employees receive 105 hours per year of holiday accrual, and 80 hours of vacation for the first 4 years of service. Vacation accrual increases to 120 hours upon 5 years of service, and increases to a maximum of 220 hours after 30 years of service. The City also pays court standby pay. Must be employed as full-time peace officer in a California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified law enforcement agency with two years of continuous peace officer experience at the time of application.

VALIDATED PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST

Candidates who pass the VPAT will participate in a P.O.S.T. mandated structured interview (SI). PRE-INVESTIGATIVE QUESTIONNAIRE
Candidates will be required to complete a Pre-Investigative Questionnaire that will consist of questions regarding narcotics use, theft, arrest history, domestic violence, and driving history. RESCHEDULING PROCEDURE

VALIDATED PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST
Candidates who pass the multiple choice test will proceed to the VPAT.
The VPAT evaluates candidates' baseline physical fitness level, relative to the physical demands of the Sheriff's Academy and is comprised of four tests: push-ups, 75-yard run, sit-ups, and 20 meter shuttle run test. Candidates must pass the VPAT to start the background investigation.
Candidates will have three (3) opportunities to pass the VPAT within a six (6) month period from the date of the candidate's initial scheduled VPAT appointment.
Candidates who do not pass the VPAT within the six (6) months must wait three (3) months from the date of the last VPAT failure to reapply for this position.
Candidates are strongly encouraged to work out and be in good physical condition. Candidates who pass the VPAT should continue to work out to meet the physical demands of the academy. The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department offers Pre-Academy Workouts for candidates in the hiring process.
STRUCTURED INTERVIEW (SI)
Candidates who pass the VPAT will participate in a P.O.S.T. mandated structured interview (SI). The SI evaluates the candidates' experience, problem solving, interest/motivation, interpersonal skills, community involvement/awareness, and communication skills. If a candidate does not pass the SI, they must wait three (3) months to reapply.
PRE-INVESTIGATIVE QUESTIONNAIRE
Candidates will be required to complete a Pre-Investigative Questionnaire that will consist of questions regarding narcotics use, theft, arrest history, domestic violence, and driving history. Examples of disqualifying factors include but are not limited to: failure to appear to scheduled appointments, felony convictions, job related misdemeanor convictions, certain serious traffic convictions or patterns, suspended license, driving under the influence, poor credit or employment history, substance abuse, and active criminal probation.
PERSONAL HISTORY STATEMENT (PHS)
Candidates will be required to complete a P.O.S.T. mandated Personal History Statement (PHS). Candidates will receive emails from the Department's electronic case management system, E-Hire, with instructions on how to complete the PHS. Candidates are required to submit specific documents (i.e., driver license, social security card, birth/marriage certificate(s) etc.). It is the candidates' responsibility to bring both original documents and copies to their background intake appointment. Department representatives will verify the copies against the original documents, and return all original documents.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION
A thorough background investigation will be conducted which includes, but is not limited to; discrepancy interviews, a Live Scan (fingerprint search), polygraph examination, law enforcement agency checks, and residence/employment checks. Candidates who complete the background investigation may be selected for the position and will be extended a conditional offer of employment prior to the psychological and medical evaluations.
Candidates who are disqualified from the background investigation may be ineligible to reapply for any Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department position(s) for a minimum of twelve (12) months.
PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION
The psychological evaluation consists of a four (4) hour test. Once candidates have completed the test, they will meet with a psychologist.

MEDICAL EVALUATION
The medical evaluation assesses physical ability, ensuring capability to participate in the demanding duties of the position.

ACADEMY TRAINING
The Sheriff's Academy is a training program and is approved by the California Department of Corrections and the California Commission on P.O.S.T. Classes are conducted two evenings a week and some weekends and holidays. The Academy days may be conducted in shifts. Recruits generally spend additional time outside of class preparing for class and studying for exams. Recruits in the Sheriff's Academy will participate in classroom and scenario-based training, which will include: the interpretation and application of laws, report writing, radio operations, first aid and CPR, defensive tactics, handcuffing and searching techniques, use of the baton, the safe handling, care, and use of firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and Department regulations and laws regarding the use of force and firearms. Throughout the academy program, recruits will also participate in regular physical training. Knowledge, skill and task competence will be assessed. Academy success will be determined through multiple-choice and true/false tests, role playing exercises and performance, physical ability, and work sample tests.

EMPLOYEE BENEFITS
SALARY RANGE: Composed of 5 steps-Step 1 through Step 5. Each step represents an increase of approximately 5% per year during the first five years of service.
MEDICAL INSURANCE: Choice of 12 CalPERS medical plans. City pays 89% of medical insurance premium for employee and eligible dependents. Employee contributes 11% toward premium and admin fees.
CASH-IN-LIEU: Employees who elect to waive medical coverage due to spouse's medical coverage are entitled to a payment equal to the cost of the current employee only premium rate under the PORAC plan per month. Payment is provided bi-weekly.
DENTAL INSURANCE: An HMO and PPO plan are available. Premiums fully paid by the city for employee and eligible dependents.
VISION INSURANCE: One plan available. Premiums fully paid by the city for employee and eligible dependents.
FLEXIBLE SPENDING ACCOUNT: Employees may elect to contribute pre-tax dollars towards a Flexible Spending Account to pay for qualifying health and dependent care.
EMPLOYEE ASSISTANCE PROGRAM: Premiums fully paid by the city for employee and household members.
CalPERS RETIREMENT: Retirement formula and employee contributions are based on appointment date and membership status with CalPERS. City employees are vested after 5 years and do not participate in Social Security. Employees pay a 1.45% contribution towards Medicare.
SUPPLEMENTAL RETIREMENT PLAN: 457(b) plan is available for voluntary participation.
PREMIUM REIMBURSEMENT PLAN: The City makes a monthly contribution of $142 into a retiree trust to allow eligible separated employees to reimburse healthcare premiums. Employees contribute $257 monthly.
VACATION: 60 hours following the completion of the first six months of continuous service. Thereafter, up to and including five completed years of continuous service, 10 hours for each completed calendar month of service.
* Accrued vacation leave can be cashed out based on years of service on two occasions each calendar year.
SICK LEAVE: One sick leave day per month (96 hours per year).
* Sick leave accrued but not used can be cashed out at the end of the fiscal year based on the formula outlined in the POA MOU.
TUITION REIMBURSEMENT: Full-time employees who have passed probation will be reimbursed for the cost of tuition and study materials for career improvement or job enhancement courses that meet the policy guidelines.
The maximum amount shall not exceed $2500 per fiscal year.
