Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
· Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
· Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
· Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
· Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. Border Patrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. Border Patrol Agents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

General Definition and Conditions of Work
An employee in this class independently performs a full range of law enforcement duties in the areas of community policing, traffic, investigation, and patrol duties. Work includes preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime, helping victims, and performing traffic control work; apprehending suspects; testifying in court; and, executing related assignments. Employee must exercise judgment, initiative, and calm control when performing duties. Police Officer I: Positions at this level are entry-level with 0-2 years of experience in law enforcement. Office of Campus Safety and Security Responsible to conduct patrols on North Greenville University (NGU) campuses to ensure security of buildings, students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Responsible to respond to requests for assistance and emergencies. Responsible to enforce vehicle and traffic regulations. Provides escort services, and other basic public assistance services as needed, and performs routine security and public safety patrol duties within assigned area. Remains alert to emergency situations and provides first-line response, emergency management, and/or referral if required.
Responsibilities:
* Patrols assigned area on foot, in assigned patrol vehicle, or other specialized vehicle to ensure personal, building, and equipment security.
* Examines doors, windows, and gates to ensure security; uses University keys to open and close buildings; monitors closed buildings for unauthorized persons and/or suspicious activities.
* Informs and warns violators of rule infractions, such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles.
* Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty, as necessary; provides other public assistance, such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information.
* Provides parking assistance and crowd control for events on campus.
* Watches for and reports irregularities, such as security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations; contacts emergency responders, such as other law enforcement, fire, and/or ambulance personnel, as required.
* Remains alert for the presence of unauthorized persons and/or security code violators; approaches suspicious persons and/or notifies other law enforcement as appropriate; may confront and/or detain violators, as required, until other law enforcement support arrive.
* Performs periodic checks of emergency equipment (i.e. VISIPLEX) to ensure proper functioning; reports malfunctions as required. May provide safe and efficient transportation to university employees and/or visitors, as requested, using department assigned vehicles.
* Patrols and monitors campus streets/roads, parking lots/areas to provide public security and assistance. Maintains security controls for issued university keys; safeguards and controls issued University equipment. Prepares routine/standardized reports which means that incident documentation/report writing is a requirement of job responsibilities.
* May provide specialized security in other complex operational areas, requiring specific knowledge of the operating environment.
* Attend training and administrative meetings as required by the department.
* Serves as Campus Law Enforcement/Security Authority as outlined by the Clery Act.
Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities:

General Definition and Conditions of Work

This is an entry-level recruit position intended for individuals without prior law enforcement experience. Recruits will remain in this position during the first probationary year of employment. Recruits will complete a 12-week training program through the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy (SCCJA) including virtual, classroom, and hands-on training intended to provide the knowledge, skills, and the abilities to perform the duties of a certified law enforcement officer in the state of South Carolina. Upon completion of the training academy the recruit will be a certified Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer. Following the training academy, recruits will complete the Greenville Police Department's (GPD) field training program as well as a month probationary internal training process.
The purpose of this position is to develop and prepare recruits for advancement to Police Officer I. To successfully complete the program, recruits must demonstrate proficiency and understanding in the following areas: federal, state, and local laws and ordinances as well as department rules and protocols; proper reporting and documentation procedures; officer safety; emergency vehicle operations; equipment and firearm care and use; and courtroom testimony procedures and legal processes. Essential Functions % of Time
* Obtain Class 1 Law Enforcement Officer Certification: Receive 6-8 weeks of training locally via the online SCCJA training program and pass a cumulative test on the material. Complete initial firearms training, taser certification, National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification, Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Incident Management System (NIMS) training, oleoresin capsicum (OC) spray certification, and driving orientation through GPD. * Complete Department Field Training: Complete post-academy training through GPD to include rifle familiarization, body worn camera usage, electronic report writing (e.g., incident, collision, and citations), and patrol operations field training. Under immediate supervision of a Police Training Officer (PTO), become familiar with patrol zones as well as the various types of calls for service received throughout the city. Demonstrate the ability to establish control of incident scene, detain suspects, and provide for the safety of the public. Demonstrate the ability to group facts to properly investigate a problem as well as the ability to interpret information received from victims, witnesses, and suspects.
