Base Salary: GL-9/GS-11 $63,148 - $120,145 per year
Locality Pay: Varies by duty location.
Overtime Pay: Up to 25%
Duty location impacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement is higher in some locations than others. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in the lower grade level.
All BorderPatrolAgents may select from an array of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan that is similar to traditional and ROTH 401(k) offerings. *Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed BorderPatrolAgents (as defined in 5 CFR 575.102) will be offered up to a $20,000 incentive. The first $10,000 will be paid upon successful completion of the BorderPatrol Academy, with the remaining $10,000 awarded for accepting a prioritized

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
· Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
· Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
· Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
· Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level BorderPatrolAgent opportunities.
Other Requirements:
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the BorderPatrolAgent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).
Veterans' Preference: You may also be eligible for an excepted service Veterans' Recruitment Appointment (VRA). The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans' Preference eligible.
Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. BorderPatrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. BorderPatrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. BorderPatrolAgents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

FRONTLINE NATIONAL EXAMINATION: (qualifying) includes multiple-choice video simulations and computer administered test in which candidates must complete the following three test components: a video-based human relations test, report writing, and reading comprehension. The examination is administered by the National Testing Network. PLEASE DO NOT TAKE THE FRONTLINE EXAM UNTIL YOU RECEIVE AN E-MAIL STATING THAT YOU MEET THE MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS. Candidates need a score of 60% or higher on the Video Section, and an overall score of 70% or higher to pass this examination.
The City of Santa Ana is now accepting PELLETB scores from other agencies. The PELLETB exam must have been completed within one year of application date in order for scores to be used in lieu of the Frontline National Examination. The minimal acceptable score is 46.
The next three selection components (Physical Agility Exam, Oral Interview Examination and Background Orientation) are all consolidated in one full day of testing.
2. PHYSICAL AGILITY EXAM: (qualifying) will evaluate each applicant's physical strength, agility and endurance in the following timed components:
* 1.5 MILE RUN The 1.5 mile run must be completed within 14 minutes to pass the City of Santa Ana physical agility test.
* 500 YARD RUN Run 500 yards
* SOLID FENCE CLIMB Run 5 yards to a 6-foot solid fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards
* CHAIN LINK FENCE Run 5 yards to a 6-foot chain link fence, climb over fence, and continue running another 25 yards
* OBSTACLE COURSE/AGILITY RUN Run a 99-yard obstacle course consisting of several sharp turns, a number of curb-height obstacles, and a 34-inch high obstacle
* BODY DRAG Lift and drag 165 pound lifelike dummy 32 feet
* Some components may be waived
Each of the above events are timed. Candidate's performance times are converted to points and summed. Candidates must successfully complete the 1.5 mile run AND accumulate a minimum total score of 384 points in the remaining five events to pass the physical agility test.

Major Duties
Under general supervision, the Police Officer is responsible for a wide range of responsibilities that support the safety, security, and overall well-being of the campus community. Qualifications

What You Need to Succeed in this Role

CLASSIFICATION STANDARDS
Positions in this non-sworn Deputy Sheriff Trainee (DST) classification are characterized by participation in a formal law enforcement training program involving both classroom and practical instruction in subjects such as criminal law, evidence and investigation, patrol and traffic procedures, administration of justice, police/community relations and jail custody and operations. Incumbents must possess the ability to assimilate classroom instructions covering a wide variety of academic and technical subjects as well as physical skill and coordination to become proficient in firearm and weaponless defense techniques. Must be in good general physical condition, free from any medical condition that would interfere with the satisfactory performance of the essential duties of this classification.
VISION:
(1) Acuity - At least 20/70 in each eye without correction, correctable to 20/30 in each eye.
Successful soft contact lens wearers are not required to meet the uncorrected standard as long as their corrected vision is 20/30 in each eye.
(2) Color perception - Anything other than minor hue impairment is disqualifying.
HEARING:

VALIDATED PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST

The VPAT evaluates your baseline physical fitness level, relative to the physical demands of the Sheriff's Academy and is comprised of four tests: push-ups, 75-yard run, sit-ups, and 20 meter shuttle run test. You must attempt the VPAT to start the background investigation.
You will have unlimited opportunities to pass the VPAT during the hiring process. You must pass the VPAT prior to receiving a conditional offer of employment.

BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION

ACADEMY TRAINING
The Sheriff's Academy is a twenty-two week long training program and is approved by the California Department of Corrections and the California Commission on P.O.S.T. Classes are conducted Monday through Friday and some weekends and holidays. The Academy days are generally eight and one-half hours long and may be conducted in shifts. Recruits generally spend additional time outside of class preparing for class and studying for exams. Recruits in the Sheriff's Academy will participate in classroom and scenario-based training, which will include: the interpretation and application of laws, report writing, radio operations, first aid and CPR, defensive tactics, handcuffing and searching techniques, use of the baton, the safe handling, care, and use of firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and Department regulations and laws regarding the use of force and firearms. Retirement Benefits
An employee who is a Classic member of CalPERS or a current member of another California public retirement system who is hired on or after January 1, 2013, will be enrolled in the CalPERS 3.0% @ age 50 benefit formula with one year final compensation. AGE

EDUCATION

REAPPLY PROCEDURE
Applicants who have participated in the examination process for any one of the Law Enforcement Job Family (LEJF) positions and who do not achieve a qualifying score, must wait three (3) months after the date of the failed test to reapply for any of the LEJF examinations. VALIDATED PHYSICAL ABILITY TEST
Candidates who pass the multiple choice test will proceed to the VPAT.
The VPAT evaluates candidates' baseline physical fitness level, relative to the physical demands of the Sheriff's Academy and is comprised of four tests: push-ups, 75-yard run, sit-ups, and 20 meter shuttle run test. Candidates must pass the VPAT to start the background investigation.
Candidates will have three (3) opportunities to pass the VPAT within a six (6) month period from the date of the candidate's initial scheduled VPAT appointment.
Candidates who do not pass the VPAT within the six (6) months must wait three (3) months from the date of the last VPAT failure to reapply for this position.

PRE-INVESTIGATIVE QUESTIONNAIRE

ACADEMY TRAINING
The Sheriff's Academy is a training program and is approved by the California Department of Corrections and the California Commission on P.O.S.T. Classes are conducted two evenings a week and some weekends and holidays. The Academy days may be conducted in shifts. Recruits generally spend additional time outside of class preparing for class and studying for exams. Recruits in the Sheriff's Academy will participate in classroom and scenario-based training, which will include: the interpretation and application of laws, report writing, radio operations, first aid and CPR, defensive tactics, handcuffing and searching techniques, use of the baton, the safe handling, care, and use of firearms, emergency vehicle operations, and Department regulations and laws regarding the use of force and firearms. Throughout the academy program, recruits will also participate in regular physical training. Knowledge, skill and task competence will be assessed. Academy success will be determined through multiple-choice and true/false tests, role playing exercises and performance, physical ability, and work sample tests.

SALARY
* Current: $8,204 - $10,995 monthly
Lateral Incentive Program - Applicants who are currently employed with another California law enforcement agency and have successfully passed that agency's probationary period will qualify for the City's Lateral Police Officer incentives which include:
* Reduced ten (10) month probationary period.
* Up to 80 hours of sick leave upon hire depending on current sick leave balance with current employer.

Major Duties

Qualifications
