Overview and Examples of Work
Patrols a designated area of the City on foot, on a radio-equipped motorcycle, or in a radio-equipped car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, to direct traffic and to enforce motor vehicle operation and parking regulations;
Answers calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies, neighborhood disturbances and other misdemeanors and felonies;
Secures the scene of a crime, administers first aid, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers evidence, obtains witnesses and makes arrests;
Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations;
Administers first aid at the scene of automobile accidents, interviews witnesses, gathers information and prepares detailed accident reports;
Interviews persons with complaints and inquiries, attempts to make proper disposition, or directs them to proper authorities;
Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the public;
Conducts investigations of vice and narcotics activities, investigates reports of stolen automobiles and property stolen from automobiles, and conducts follow-up investigations of homicides and thefts;
Covers an assigned beat with primary emphasis on traffic law enforcement and provides specialized traffic control services in connection with parades and similar public events;
Investigates charges of fraud, forgery, embezzlement and bad checks;
Processes crime scenes;
Maintains evidence and other property;
Recruits applicants for police positions;
Investigates cases of runaways, assaults, larcenies, burglaries, sex involving juveniles, child neglect and abuse, and vandalism;
Conducts foot patrol and building searches, and tracks wanted persons as a K-9 official;
Responds to domestic trouble and civil dispute cases;
Investigates homicides, suicides, felonious assault and all sex-related cases when assigned as an investigator in the Criminal Investigations Division;
Educates the public in crime prevention;
Attends regular training classes in police methods, first aid, firearms qualifications and related subjects;
Keeps informed with respect to persons of known bad character and places of questionable legality within an assigned area;
Maintains records and prepares reports;
Performs related work as required.
Minimum Qualifications
High School Diploma or GED; one year of work experience involving public contact under varying circumstances; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Employees must possess a valid driver's license issued by the state of their residence. Candidates for this class are required to meet the minimum age and medical standards as established by the Human Resources Department. Good character and background are essential requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
Four-Year College Degree or equivalent, directly-related work experience.

Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.

Qualifications:

· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.

There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level BorderPatrolAgent opportunities.
Other Requirements:
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Employees in these positions work in all areas of the Sheriff's Office and may be assigned to any unit with daily interaction with inmates. New employees are initially assigned to our state of the art direct supervision Detention Facility. Deputies may rotate to other areas based on the needs of the Sheriff's Office. The majority of positions are assigned to the detention facility so the ability to transfer to other areas is minimal. Most employees work 12-hour fixed shifts (including days, nights, weekends and holidays) and 15 days per month. Deputies earn full salary and benefits while training at the Academy. The Detention Facility is accredited by the American Correctional Association (achieved by less than 4% of jails nationwide).
Minimum Requirements
High school diploma or GED equivalent;
At least 21 years of age at the time of appointment or within 6 months of the 21st-birthday on the date of application;
Excellent physical condition;
U.S. citizen at the time of application;
Bondable for handling Commonwealth funds;
Possession of a valid driver's license from the applicant's place of residence;
Available for emergency calls and standby duty, overtime, and details outside the facility; and
Willing to workdays, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and fixed 12-hour shifts.
Employees must successfully complete the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy (NVCJTA) within the first 12 months of employment. Successful completion includes passing all phases of academic, physical (e.g. running, defensive tactics), driving and firearms training. In-service training and firearms qualifications are job requirements throughout employment.
The Sheriff's Office incurs considerable financial investment in training a Deputy Sheriff. In return, the Sheriff's Office requires a 48-month commitment from its employees. This 48-month commitment begins after an employee has successfully completed the NVCJTA. If the employee terminates employment within one (1) year after the completion of the NVCJTA, unless such termination is the result of circumstances beyond one's control, the total cost of this training shall be due and payable to Arlington County Sheriff's Office. If the employee terminates employment after one (1) year and before two (2) years after completion of the NVCJTA, a prorated amount of the training costs will be due and payable to the Arlington County Sheriff's Office.
All new uniformed (sworn) Sheriff's Office employees must be non-smokers and are required to sign an agreement that they will not smoke on or off the job during their tenure of employment.
All new uniformed (sworn) Sheriff's Office employees may not have any tattoos visible (on head, neck or hands etc.) when wearing the long-sleeved shirt uniform.
Basic computer/data entry skills are required for the purposes of report writing and other documentation.
Most employees work 12-hour fixed shifts (including days, nights, weekends, and holidays) and 15 days per month.

The background investigation will be conducted by the Sheriff's Office, after a conditional offer of employment has been made, to include a polygraph examination administered by a licensed/certified polygraph examiner. Incomplete and/or inaccurate information on the background form may be cause for rejection. Candidates who do not successfully complete the background investigation are not normally allowed to re-apply. Background investigations require a good driving record and a clean criminal history. Candidates are unlikely to receive favorable consideration if they have engaged in activities that would support a felony conviction, have misdemeanor convictions for crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, or assault, have recent convictions for D.U.I. or D.W.I. or reckless driving, or multiple convictions for speeding or other moving violations. During the polygraph, applicants will be questioned in the following relevant areas: accuracy of information provided on applications and related documents; honesty, integrity, and reliability of the applicant; criminal and traffic history, either previously detected or undetected; and involvement with illicit drugs. All questions will be discussed with the applicant by the polygraph examiner before the test starts and the applicant will be given the opportunity to clarify any potential problem areas.
After a conditional offer of employment has been made, the following may be scheduled:
- Photos, fingerprints - conducted by the Sheriff's Office
- Psychological Evaluation - conducted by a licensed psychologist
- Medical Examination
- Drug Test
Each candidate must pass each component of the examination process before continuing to the next step. It takes approximately 10-16 weeks to complete the process. After successfully completing all steps, the candidate is placed on an unranked eligible list from which all Deputy Sheriff vacancies are filled for the duration of the eligible list.
New employees are initially appointed as Deputy Sheriff (Grade S2). With satisfactory performance, employees are considered for periodic increases. The probationary period for this position is one year after successful graduation from the Academy. During probation the employee must pass all requirements of the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy (24-week Academy) to receive certifications as a Jailer and Court Security/Civil Process Server and in law enforcement.
Candidates who are proficient in both English and Spanish will be offered a Spanish oral proficiency examination after graduation from the Northern Virginia Criminal Justice Training Academy. Deputy Sheriffs who pass the Spanish oral proficiency examination will receive language pay for all hours worked and for paid leave hours.
Specific duties include:
Supervising and monitoring the daily activities of inmates to include security within housing units, inmate visits, booking/processing, program activities, food service, recreation and general work assignments;
Managing inmate behavior and using appropriate force as necessary;
Supervising inmates assigned to Inmate Work Programs;
Receiving and screening the public seeking admittance to the facility; and
Processing inmates' personal property and money.
Other duties and assignments may include:
Court Security - secure courtrooms; monitor courts in session; escort prisoners to and from courts and the Detention Facility; perform security checks within the Courthouse; respond to security check problems and Courthouse incidents.
Warrant Process - serve legal papers; execute criminal warrants issued by the Court; take individuals into custody; and schedule and execute Court ordered evictions.
Transportation - transport inmates and other individuals in custody to/from other correctional facilities, hearings, medical facilities, doctor's appointments.
All assignments include writing reports and documenting incidents. The nature of the work necessitates an element of danger and requires physical exertion and the ability to make decisions under stress. Work is performed according to departmental policies and procedures and involves the potential for personal danger. The employee must be able to communicate effectively, solve problems, write concise reports, maintain good physical conditioning, and be able to act quickly and calmly as part of a team under potentially stressful conditions.

Applicants must provide a portfolio highlighting their training, experience, and ability to investigate both administrative and criminal incidents within an educational setting. Highly qualified candidates will undergo an oral interview, followed by a conditional offer, background investigation, polygraph, physical exam, and psychological evaluation. Upon successful completion of all steps, a final interview with the Chief of Police will be conducted. Portions of the background check may be modified or waived at Chief's discretion and may be dependent on the law enforcement employment status of the applicant.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Serves as a visible, active law enforcement presence on public school campus and is responsible for ensuring safety by patrolling school grounds, responding to suspicious activity taking law enforcement action as needed. The SRO oversees their assigned school as well as its feeder elementary and middle schools.
Assumes primary responsibility for handling all calls for service from the school and coordinates the response of other police resources to the school. Investigates, or assists in investigating, crimes and incidents occurring on school property. SRO is expected to assist PD during dire needs.
Works closely with the school staff to build positive relationships and promote a better understanding of law enforcement within the school community. This includes participation in the development and implementation of school safety plans and emergency response procedures.
Conducts annual safety and security assessments of all schools and provides or coordinates safety training for students and staff, including lockdown drills, fire drills, and evacuation protocols.
Conduct courses and workshops for students, staff and parents to promote social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, self-awareness and responsible decision making. Takes lead on training such as school safety, de-escalation, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, internet safety, Crime prevention, traffic education, law enforcement education, bullying and similar topics.
Works with the School Administration to identify school events where police presence may be necessary, such as: all night graduation party, school dances, school plays, etc. SRO will attend these events if coverage is unavailable.
Conducts truancy checks as requested by school administration. Assists in investigating possible residency fraud for the school system.
Provides informal counseling and support to students and serving as a mentor to build trust and rapport.
Fulfills all the duties and responsibilities of a police officer. Attends all required PD training and operates under the direction of the Chief of Police or their designee.
Works flexible hours based on school hours and their needs; however, they are expected to respond to emergencies on campus during or outside of school hours.
Adheres to the guidelines of the MOU with the City of Falls Church Public Schools.
SROs will assist with the departmental needs during summer breaks and extended school closures.

Minimum Qualifications
To become a Police Officer with the City of Falls Church Police Department, you must meet the minimum qualifications for law enforcement office as defined in VA Code § 15.2-1705 and other hiring requirements.
Age: must be at least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application and at least 21 by the date of hire.
Character/Background Assessment: applicants that continue past the exam/interview phase will undergo a comprehensive background investigation and character check. Individual situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis; however, a favorable driving record and a clean criminal history are essential. The police department retains the right to reject any applicant for any arrest and/or conviction that occurred at any age (unless the arrest or criminal charge against them has been expunged, pursuant to Virginia Code § 15.2-1705).
All aspects of an applicant's background are considered when making a final hiring determination, however applicants who have past or current behavior(s) as listed below may be disqualified:
Have ever engaged in any activity that would support a felony conviction
Have convictions or charges pending for misdemeanor crimes relating to theft, domestic violence, assault, crimes of moral turpitude (such as lying under oath or falsifying official documents), any crime requiring registration on the Sex Offender Registry at any age, or any crime which carries a penalty of prohibiting the ownership of, possession, or control of a firearm.
Have recent convictions for D.U.I., D.W.I, or multiple convictions for speeding and other moving violations.
Have associations with or support in any fashion any criminal gang, extremist-racist, Anti-Semitic group, or any group that has stated a desire to overthrow the United States Government.
Have recent history of bankruptcy, substantial debts with collection agencies, or poor credit record that indicates poor financial literacy.
Illicit use of any Schedule 1 drugs (illegal drugs never prescribed for any legitimate purpose), Schedule 2 drugs (medicinal drugs not used in a manner consistent with what they are prescribed for), or anabolic steroids (unless prescribed by a physician) within three years of the date of application.
Having sold, distributed, or manufactured any prescription or illegal drugs without legal authorization.
Any previous revocation or denial of certification as Police Officer or a suspension of current certified status.
Failure to provide a fully completed, honestly reported, Personal History Statement, including intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position
Citizenship: must be a United States citizen. Permanent resident aliens with an application for naturalization filed and pending with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services may also be considered.
Driver's License: must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license by date of hire. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Education: must have a high school diploma or passed the GED.
Physical Condition: must be in good physical condition as determined by a licensed medical professional provided by the City of Falls Church Human Resources Department. Deputy Sheriffs primarily work in the Office's direct supervision Adult Detention Center, which houses approximately 350 adult inmates. All newly hired Deputy Sheriffs will begin their career working in the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center. Deputies work a 12.5-hour shift of either days or nights. All shifts work approximately 15 days per month, which equals 87.5 hours every two-week pay period.
Candidates who are currently certified by the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS) as a Law Enforcement Officer will earn a minimum starting salary of $67,667.34. Prior years of relevant Virginia law enforcement experience will be reviewed and can result in additional salary increases.

Training: The DLA Police is dedicated to providing our military installations with the best possible quality of officer. We at DLA recognize that one of the most important ways to accomplish this task is through dedicated, consistent, and continual training. Our officers receive training through a variety of programs. The bulk of this training is conducted through the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center (FLETC) in Glynco, GA, and the Army Civilian Police Academy at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. Recruit officers begin training immediately while receiving full pay and benefits.
Mission Essential: This position has been designated as a Mission Essential position (e.g., snow emergency days, holidays, increased security periods, national emergency). The position cannot be vacated during war or national emergencies without seriously impairing the mission. Assignments may be performed at any job site within the organization.
Physical Demands: The work requires extended periods of physical exertion derived from such activities as running, walking, standing, bending or driving and occasionally lifting, pushing and/or carrying items weighing 50 pounds or more. Requires stamina, physical agility and dexterity and the strength to pursue, apprehend or detain. The incumbent may be required to push or drag heavy weights of 150 pounds or more. The incumbent is required to exemplify the physical characteristic of agility in the performance of his/her duties. DoD and DLA regulations require at a minimum an initial and annual physical fitness test. The individual will also undergo routine training in defensive tactics, active shooter/hostage response, handcuffing and firearms qualifications which require physical agility, dexterity and stamina.
Work Environment: The work is performed in an environment which involves exposure to regular and recurring discomforts such as extreme variations in weather conditions while directing traffic and performing walking patrols. The incumbent may be exposed to high levels of noise in certain industrial settings, destructive weather or higher Force Protection conditions. The work involves moderate and high risks and possible endangerment of life or serious injury that requires the exercise of safety precautions and use of personal protective equipment such as vests, coats, gloves, boots, goggles, masks, shields, etc. Incumbent may also be subject to uncomfortable conditions where basic facilities may not be provided or functional.

Drug-Free Workplace Policy
The Defense Logistics Agency (DLA) is committed to maintaining a safe, drug-free workplace. All DLA employees are required to refrain from illegal drug use on and off duty. DLA conducts pre-employment, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, and random drug testing.
