Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Physical Demands/Working Conditions
Duties require extended periods of outdoor work and exposure to conditions including temperatures that may range from below freezing to in excess of 100 degrees. The department requires employees to be physically and mentally able to adjust to work in changing environments and conditions. Emergency service and law enforcement work requires entry into hazardous environments; exposure to dangerous persons, animals, and substances; and exposure to infectious diseases. A wide range of personal protective equipment is required to be used and maintained, some of which may be uncomfortable or inconvenient to wear. Physical Agility is required to access all areas of campus. Rigorous field work requires above average physical performance, endurance, and superior conditioning. QUALIFYING PHYSICAL FITNESS (AGILITY) TEST: The three elements measured in the physical fitness test are muscular endurance, absolute strength and cardiovascular capacity. Note: The Municipal Police Training Council adopted the physical fitness-screening test based on the model formulated by the Cooper Institute of Aerobics Research. Failure of any one part of the test will result in a failure of the physical fitness test. The minimum passing scores, depending on age and sex, represents the fortieth (40th) percentile of physical fitness as established by the Cooper Institute. Copies of the physical fitness standards are available upon request from the City of Rochester's Civil Service Office. After the passage of the physical fitness test, fitness must be maintained throughout the pre-employment process.
BACKGROUND INVESTIGATION/PSYCHOLOGICAL EVALUATION: The background investigation will include an investigation into your background including, but not limited to education, military, employment, credit, drug use, and criminal records. Any negative report from the background investigation may be grounds for disqualification pursuant to Section 50 of the Civil Service Law. As a Military Police Officer for the Army National Guard, you'll do all of these things by protecting, defending, and upholding the law. MPs support battlefield operations through circulation control, providing area security, conducting prisoner of war operations, supervising civilian internee operations, and carrying out law and order operations. MPs also support the peacetime Army community by protecting critical resources, implementing crime prevention programs, and preserving law and order.

Job training for Military Police consists of 10 weeks of Basic Training, where you'll learn basic Soldiering skills, and 20 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT) and on-the-job instruction, including practice in police methods. Part of this time is spent in the classroom and part in the field.
