Assist in the investigation of criminal offenses, accidents and other police related issues. Respond to complaints such as trespassers, fights, domestics, and alarms. Handle arrest situations and associated activities. Drive a patrol car to monitor traffic problems and violations. Write detailed reports to document activities. Ensure public order is maintained/restored. Answer questions form the public on the phone or in person. Monitor and gather evidence at crime scenes. Minimum qualifications:
-Applicants must be POST licensed as a full-time peace officer, eligible to be licensed, or current criminal justice students who anticipate taking the POST licensing exam before May 1st, 2026.

Pay range:
$77,706.84 - $100,223.44 annually (2026)
$80,038.08 - $103,230.36 annually (2027)
Lateral entry qualifications:
* Applicants with four (4) or more years of current and continuous full-time peace officer experience in good standing are eligible for lateral pay entry based upon professional growth, continuing education, jurisdiction size, specialized training and/or experience, additional work assignments (e.g., FTO, CISM team, SRO, U/F instructor, etc.)
Lateral hire pay ranges: $90,919.56 - $100,223.44 annually. Lateral entry officers will also receive 45 hours of banked sick and vacation time to be used in accordance with city policy and collective bargaining contract.

The Deputy Sheriff performs intermediate protective services with frequent exposure to high-risk situations. Monitors vehicular traffic throughout the County. Enforces state and local traffic laws. Keeps current on new and changing laws, attends mandated training and meets required testing standards. Determines case by case action for future follow up investigations.

Documents cases by preparing written reports, which are compiled with other law enforcement on scene to present to prosecutors, judges, probation officers, human services, and others for review of the case. Exchanges and shares information with a multitude of other law enforcement agencies from other county, city, state, and federal agencies on a day-to-day basis. Corresponds with schools, other county and city agencies such as Human Services and Environmental Services. Determines the legality and need, then completes legal and administrative documents.
Controls individuals, their actions, and the situation. Evaluates information to determine the need to arrest a person. Gives orders to control, negotiate, and react to human behavior. Responds with tact, appropriate level of demeanor and professionalism when dealing with certain subjects or at death scenes. Assists Human Services staff with removal of children from their homes. Duties / Responsibilities
WHAT YOU'LL DO:
As a Community Service Officer you will be tasked with enforcing parking and city ordinances, animal control, and maintaining public safety at various scenes. Responsibilities include investigating animal complaints, maintaining the animal facility, assisting in fleet maintenance, and supporting patrol officers with traffic management and evidence processing. The position also handles clerical duties, delivers departmental documents, and participates in community policing activities.
Specifically as a Community Service Officer you will...
* Perform animal control duties, including call response, preliminary and follow-up investigations, reports, paper service for dangerous dog and potentially dangerous dog, animal care/maintenance, and animal control facility maintenance.
* Identify traffic violations and enforces downtown parking and city-wide ordinances.
* Assist in fleet maintenance, shuttling vehicles as needed, care/cleaning/ maintaining the LEC garages.
* Assist officers with various calls, such as accident scenes, private property crashes, crime scene security, medical emergencies, fire scene traffic control, funeral escorts, handling found property, tow releases/impounds, entering property evidence, and issuing fix-it tickets.
* Provide tours of the police department, including squad car tours at schools, daycares, and upon request at other events for community policing.
* Assist in crime prevention activities, including action requests, house checks, park checks, school patrols before and after school, and community policing.
* Provide delivery services to the department, including transporting evidence to the BCA, delivering documents to the county attorney's office, and picking up video evidence as requested by patrol officers. Assists with investigations by recovering and transporting evidence and delivering reports, photographs, or prints to other law enforcement agencies.
* Perform clerical duties, including data entry into Visual Labs.
* Perform other duties of a similar nature or level.
Qualifications
ABOUT YOU:
A successful candidate will have some or all of the following ...
High school diploma or GED; 1-year related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above. Current law enforcement student preferred
Knowledge of:
* Modern police practices and methods;
* Departmental procedures, rules and regulations;
* Applicable federal laws, state laws, city ordinances, and laws of arrest;
* Street layout and geography of the city;
* Principles and practices of patrol and crime prevention;
* Report preparation techniques;
* Customer service principles;
* Computer operation and related software applications.

* Apply and interpret law enforcement principles and practices;
* Apply local, state and federal laws, rules, and regulations;
* Maintain records and preparing reports;
* Provide customer service;
* Operate a computer and related software applications;

* Communication and interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, superiors, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information, function in a team environment, and to receive work direction.
Hours of Work/Physical and Mental Demands
* This is a part-time position. 20 up to 28 hours per week. Schedule will vary based on need and may include evening and weekend hours.
