Lateral Police Officers are responsible for maintaining law and order, protecting life and property, and enforcing local, state, and federal laws and ordinances with minimal training. Officers will patrol assigned areas, respond to emergency and non-emergency calls, conduct investigations, and engage with the community to promote safety and trust. This position requires integrity, sound judgment, strong communication skills, and a commitment to public service.These duties involve multiple skills and may include but are not limited to the following depending on area of assignment, needs of the organization, emergency services or special projects:
Patrols assigned areas of the City in a police car or on foot to deter and discover crime.

REQUIRED Qualifications
H.S. Diploma or G.E.D. and have a combination of experience, education, and training that would provide the level of knowledge and ability required.
Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age.
No felony or DV convictions.
Must be able to read, write, and speak the English language proficiently.
Must be able to successfully complete the Washington State Basic Law Enforcement Academy.
Must be able to pass physical ability testing, a thorough background investigation (which includes driving record, work history, credit history, conviction/arrest record, reference check, and drug history), an integrity interview, a psychological evaluation, a polygraph examination, and a Chief's interview prior to being hired.
Must pass pre-employment medical testing for the ability to perform the essential functions of the position and maintain a level of physical and mental fitness necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Verification of identity and United States work authorization must be completed as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act.

HIRING PROCESS

The City of Seattle provides police service 24 hours per day, seven days per week. Shift work, including nights, weekends, and holidays, is required.
ELIGIBILITY STANDARDS
* Be at least twenty and half (20.5) years of age.
* Hold United States citizenship, OR have legal permanent residency in the U.S., OR be a Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipient.

Please note that use of illegal drugs and the illegal use of prescription drugs, referred to in this standard, means the use of one or more drugs, the possession or distribution of which is unlawful under the Uniform Controlled Substances Act.
Offers of employment are conditioned upon a pre-employment drug screening to confirm abstinence from illegal drug use.
Traffic Record
A candidate's driving record will be thoroughly assessed and may be a factor for disqualification. Examples of infractions/traffic crimes that may be disqualifying:

Suspension of your driver's license within five (5) years of the exam date

Professional Appearance

SPD has the sole discretion in determining what is considered professional, as it relates to the position of Police Officer. Furlough:

Sick Leave:

Under the direct supervision of a Police Lieutenant and Sergeant, with general supervision by the Chief of Police, the employee's behavior is governed by policies and procedures of the Police Department; local, state, and federal laws; and court decisions.
This is a responsible human relations and skilled position in public safety. The employee in this position is responsible for the protection of the public's safety, the prevention of crime, and the enforcement of local, state, and federal laws.
The employee exercises considerable discretion in regulating daily activity and use of enforcement powers.
Work includes patrolling the community by vehicle and on foot. Bicycle and marine patrol duties are assigned upon qualification. The employee responds to calls for service, which include reports of criminal activity, traffic safety, crime prevention, and general public safety problems.
The employee conducts preliminary and continued investigations for reported crimes and traffic accidents. This responsibility includes crime scene processing, interviewing witnesses and victims, and enforcing specific violations of the law.
The employee performs several assignments to prevent crime and traffic accidents. These assignments are educational and inspectional: presentations on prevention techniques; conducting security surveys; security checks on home and businesses; inspection of business practices and policies; and inspection of building construction for compliance with the security ordinance.

Experience: One year of specialized work experience that shows you have the skills necessary to:
Make sound judgments and decisions in the use of firearms.
Deal effectively with people in a courteous and tactful manner in connection with law enforcement matters.
Analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions where you will be expected to make arrests after the completion of required training and apply these skills in a law enforcement capacity such as criminal code enforcement, determining violations of laws, correctional or rehabilitation work involving criminal offenders, security, military, etc.

Education Substitution for the GL-7 grade level: A bachelor's degree with superior academic achievement, which is based on (1) class standing, (2) grade-point average (i.e., GPA of 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0), or (3) honor society membership. Or will receive a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. Or one full year of graduate-level education in a field of study related to law enforcement (e.g., criminal justice, homeland security, justice studies, law enforcement, courts and judicial systems, forensic technology, forensic psychology, or corrections and rehabilitation) from an accredited college or university; OR

Other Requirements
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (includes protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the BorderPatrolAgent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).
Veterans' Preference: You may also be eligible for an excepted service Veterans Recruitment Appointment (VRA). The age restriction does not apply if you are Veterans' Preference eligible.
Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. BorderPatrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. BorderPatrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. BorderPatrolAgents will be provided training to become proficient with the Spanish language at the Academy.

BASIC FUNTION:

* Perform a variety of specialized police assignments in specialty programs identified by the Director of Public Safety such as hostage negotiation, K-9, firing range, DWI enforcement, domestic violence, traffic enforcement and investigation, field training, search and rescue, special events, public information, crime prevention, school related programs, property and contracted services, training, recruitment and hiring, and vice and narcotics investigations.
* Collecting Information: Interview persons with complaints and inquiries; attempt to make the proper disposition or direction to proper authorities; observe unusual or dangerous occurrences or warning symbols; ask questions to establish information required; watch out for safety or health hazards; listen or observe if a dangerous situation occurs; listen to all arguments and evidence, verbal instructions from superiors, and to verbal reports from fellow officers or subordinates.

Requires high school graduation or the equivalent. College level course work in law enforcement or related field and bilingual capability are highly desirable. Prior to employment must be a citizen of the United States of America or a lawful permanent resident; attainment of the age of 21 years; a valid Washington State driver's license and good driving record; attainment of department standards of physical fitness; submission to thorough employment reference and background investigation; submission to psychological and general medical evaluation; submission to FBI record check and polygraph examination.
