THE POSITION
This recruitment is a continuous recruitment and will be closed when a viable candidate pool has been identified.
Employees in this trainee-level, non-safety assignment, will be completing a POST certified Basic Police Academy (POST Academy), or those who are currently enrolled in an academy, and as such are considered temporary, at-will employees serving at the pleasure of the hiring authority. Assignment to this classification is limited to a maximum of one year. A Police Officer (Recruit) who fails to successfully complete the academy will be terminated.

expense. Upon successful completion of a POST Academy, the Police Officer (Recruit) is sworn in as a peace officer in the Police Officer (Entry) class and begins an 18-month probationary period.

In addition to attending the POST Basic Police Academy to gain training and proficiency in law enforcement terminology, concepts, and techniques, and to gain the requisite knowledge to be eligible to perform the duties of a sworn peace officer, candidates may perform the following duties as assigned:
Ride with officers to observe and learn peace officer responsibilities and techniques.
Operate police information equipment, including computer systems, teletypes and telephones to enter and research information at the direction of an Officer or police civilian.
Assist in processing, packaging, labeling, storing and destroying property and evidence; may provide assistance with photocopies, files, indexes and locating police records and related paperwork.
Perform errands for the department such as transporting information and paperwork to court and district attorney offices; perform related duties as assigned.

Individuals who are found to be the most qualified will be invited to participate in an oral panel interview.
Oral Panel Interview:
Oral panel interviews are weighted at 100% of a candidates score. Those whom have scored the highest will be placed on the register of eligibles and referred to the department for further consideration.
Background Investigation:
The most qualified candidates will be provided a conditional offer letter and invited to move forward in the selection process to a background investigation in accordance with applicable law, regulation and/or policy. Candidates will be required to complete and submit a State of California Personal History Statement (POST Form 2-251 Rev. 01/2024). The information that you provide in the Personal History Statement will be used in the background investigation to assist in determining your suitability for the position of Police Officer (Recruit), in accordance with POST Commission Regulation 1953. Background investigations will also include live scan fingerprinting, and polygraph examination.
Those candidates who pass the background investigation portion of the selection process may be invited to a Chief's interview. Based on a candidates suitability as determined by the background investigation and Chief's interview, a pre-placement psychological and medical examination would be the next step in the selection process.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The interview is conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board who will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. Final Testing and Final Appointment
Applicants who pass the written, physical, and oral test will be placed on the continuous Deputy Sheriff-Recruit eligibility list for twelve months. Rank on the list is determined by the oral board test score and any veteran's credit for which individual competitors may qualify. Applicants' scores are grouped into Certification Bands. Scores between 83 to 100 are placed in Band A, scores between 77 to 82.99 are placed in Band B, and scores between 70-76.99 are placed in Band C. Candidates are moved on into the background process from the list. Typically, the Sheriff's Office administers three Basic Academies per year.
Veteran's Preference Credits
Veterans who have received an honorable discharge and disabled veterans may be allowed an additional 5% of their total earned score (providing the exam is otherwise successfully completed). To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a DD214 that indicates the applicant received an honorable discharge or proof of disability ATTACHED TO THEIR APPLICATION AT THE TIME OF FILING.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
CONVICTION HISTORY
During the background process, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County.
DISQUALIFYING FACTORS
In addition to the definition of disqualifying criminal acts as defined by Cal. Gov. Code § 1029, applicants who have had their POST certification suspended, revoked, or voluntarily surrendered it, due to having engaged in "Serious Misconduct" as defined by Cal. Pen. Code § 13510.8 are ineligible to be employed as a peace officer in the State of California.

Education:

1. Additional Days Off with Pay. As stipulated in the appropriate bargaining agreements and board resolutions, Classified employees working full year (260 days/year) work schedules are granted, as paid days off, the days between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, as well as an additional five (5) paid days during spring break. Eligible school-term-only (STO) employees who are not scheduled to work the designated days between Christmas and New Year's Day shall be granted three (3) paid days off to be scheduled by mutual agreement between the employee and supervisor. Deputies have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments such as patrol, investigations, special events, traffic, K-9, off-road motorcycle / bicycle patrol, range master, field training officer, and various lead officer positions and potential promotional opportunities. Deputies will be assigned to rotate between units and / or other units, as appropriate, at the discretion of the Director of Public Safety.
During the course of their work, deputies will be exposed to potentially dangerous and adverse conditions. Deputies must be willing and able to work in emergency situations, confined spaces, and intense life-threatening conditions. Deputies will be exposed to persons whose actions may place them in harm's way. Deputies will be exposed to bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise. Deputies must be physically able to work in circumstances requiring running, jumping, walking, crawling, kneeling, climbing, stooping, pulling and moderate lifting.
Deputies must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions and able to work irregular work hours and able to work all shifts. SUDPS personnel are considered "essential" or "required" University personnel and shall respond to campus when directed to do so, even with little advanced notification.
Recognizing that Public Safety is an evolving profession, persons holding the rank of deputy must be able to respond to technological, political and social changes. Accordingly, the job responsibilities will change over time. As such, the job responsibilities of a deputy and this job description are subject to modification. Absent a higher ranking officer, the responsibility to assure shift operational efficiency shall be the primary responsibility of a deputy.
Stanford Deputy Sheriffs derive their peace officer authority through a Memorandum of Understanding between Stanford University and the Sheriff of Santa Clara County. Benefits
Retirement: CalPERS retirement formula is 3% at age 55 for Classic members or; 2.7% at age 57 for "new members" as defined by Government Code §7522.04(e). Requirements in addition to a completed online application:
Lateral Transfer: Completion of POST approved Basic Academy and actively employed by a California Law Enforcement Agency as a Peace Officer within the last twelve months; minimum one year satisfactory past Police Patrol experience and possession of POST Basic Certificate. (Copy of California POST Basic Academy Certificate and POST Basic Certificate must be submitted with application).
POST Academy Graduate: Possession of a Certified POST Basic Academy Certificate of at least 800 hours issued within 3 years of submitting an application. (Copy of California POST Basic Academy Certificate must accompany application).
POST Academy Attendee: Currently enrolled in a POST Basic Academy as a "non-affiliate," of at least 800 hours. (Letter from academy verifying current enrollment must accompany application).
Education: Graduation from High School or the equivalent with additional education at the community college level preferred.
Qualifications: Minimum 21 years of age at time of examination and must meet standards of adequate physical stature, endurance, and agility.
Licenses and Certificates:
* Possession of a California Driver's license with an acceptable driving record, which must be maintained as a condition of employment.
* A copy of all required certifications must be submitted with the online employment application in order to be considered for these positions.
Benefits
The City's comprehensive benefits package includes:
Holidays: 13 days per year.
Vacation: From 11 to 20 days per year, depending on length of service.
Sick Leave: Accrual is one day per month, with no limit on accrual. If retiring from the City, unused sick leave may be used as service credit towards CalPERS retirement.
Retirement: The City contracts with CalPERS to provide a retirement plan that utilizes the formula of 3% @ 50 for "Classic members" or 2.7% @ 57 for "PEPRA members." Classic members contribute 9% employee contribution plus 4% employer cost share. PEPRA members contribute 13% employee contribution plus 4% employer cost share in additional to 50% of the normal cost.
Insurance: The City provides its employees with medical insurance that allows employees to purchase medical insurance through CalPERS medical benefit plans. Some plans require employee contributions. Employee with proof of qualifying health insurance coverage through another group plan may qualify for a "Health In-Lieu Payment" when declining City coverage.
The City contributes toward dental insurance plan and vision plan for employees and all eligible dependents.
The City pays premiums for:
* Life insurance benefit equal to annual salary.
* Long term disability insurance.
Deferred Compensation: The City contributes $6.69 per pay period to one of three City-offered deferred compensation plans: ICMA-RC, Nationwide Retirement Solutions, or CalPERS.
Second Language Incentive: Upon successful completion of proficiency examination, the City will pay $372 per month in addition to base salary for proficiency in Spanish, Tagalog, and Chinese.
Incentives: Career incentive of 5% for service of 5 years, as well as a salary incentive of $350 per month for those who have completed probation and hold an Intermediate P.O.S.T. certificate, or $575 per month for those who have completed probation and hold an Advanced P.O.S.T. certificate.
Education Incentive of $125 per month for those who hold an Associate's Degree, $175 per month for a Bachelor's Degree, $300 per month for a Master's Degree.
