The Challenge As a Police Officer your duties will typically include patrolling assigned areas; interacting with the public; conducting criminal investigations; enforcing laws; investigating collisions; preserving the peace and writing reports. Ideal Candidate The Compensation The Police Officer Lateral consists of seven salary steps and will be commensurate with experience. To be considered as a candidate for Police Officer Lateral, you must meet the following minimum requirements: Have satisfactorily completed a Field Training Program as a Peace Officer in the State of California. Prior experience must have been with a full-service agency similar to Union City, including patrol experience within one year of the date of application is desired. Be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment. Be able to prove United States Citizenship. Have no felony convictions. 15 semester units at any accredited college in the United States is desired. Possess a valid California driver's license. Successfully pass a background investigation. Prior use of controlled substances may be grounds for disqualification. Benefits Medical/Dental/Vision: The City provides up to $2,125/month to purchase medical, dental and vision benefits. A retiree medical benefit is provided after 15 years of service (see POA MOU for details on benefits). Retirement: CalPERS enrollment in either 3% @ 55(Classic Employees) or the new 2.7% @ 57(New Employees) formula is dependent on the individual's eligibility, as per AB 340. THE POSITION Deputy Sheriff Recruit is the entry-level law enforcement position for Alameda County. This classification exists solely for those attending the Sheriff's Office Peace Officers Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) certified Basic Academy. The Deputy Sheriff Recruit is a classification characterized by assignment to a P.O.S.T. Certified Academy. Under close supervision during this Academy, the Recruit will receive intensive academic instruction in law enforcement combined with rigorous physical fitness training. Using both eyes must have far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must be free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye. These standards are confined to far vision and color vision. There are additional standards which may apply to other possible specific visual deficiencies. Additional Compensation: Employees assigned to the duties of Field or Custody Training Officer (FTO) shall receive a pay supplement of five percent (5%) of their base salary while performing such duties. Employees in the class of Deputy Sheriff II assigned to the Sheriff's Department Detective Bureaus shall receive a pay supplement of five percent (5%) of their base salary while assigned to the Bureau. If a person whose name is on a promotional list is separated (except for layoff) the name shall be removed from the promotional list of the action. Employees who meet the minimum qualifications will go through one of the following examination process: * Written Exam: The civil service written exam is a multiple choice format. If the written exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list. * Oral Exam: The oral exam is a structured interview process that will assess the candidate's education, training, and experience and may include a practical exercise. The oral exam selection process is not a hiring interview. A panel of up to four people will determine the candidate's score and rank for placement on the eligible list. Top candidates from the eligible list are referred for hiring interviews. If the oral exam is administered alone, it will be 100% of the overall score. Candidates must achieve a minimum rating of 70% in order to be placed on the eligible list. * Written & Oral Exam: If both a written exam and an oral exam is administered, the written exam is weighted at 60% and the oral exam is weighted at 40% unless otherwise indicated on the announcement.
