Duty location impacts pay rates; locality pay for federal law enforcement is higher in some locations than others. A fully trained BPA may be eligible for up to an additional 25% of base pay per the BPA Pay Reform Act of 2014. This is a career ladder position with a grade level progression from GL-9 to GS-11 to GS-12. You will be eligible for a promotion to the next higher grade level (without re-applying) once you successfully complete 52 weeks in the lower grade level.
All Border Patrol Agents may select from an array of federal employment benefits that include health and insurance plans, a generous annual and sick leave program, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan, a retirement plan that is similar to traditional and ROTH 401(k) offerings. *Recruitment Incentive* Newly appointed Border Patrol Agents (as defined in 5 CFR 575.102) will be offered up to a $20,000 incentive. Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
· Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
· Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
· Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
· Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.

Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. Border Patrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. THE POSITION Deputy Sheriffs, under general supervision at the higher level (Deputy Sheriff II), and close supervision at the lower level (Deputy Sheriff I), supervise the work and conduct of inmates in a county correctional institution; patrol an area and enforce law and order; receive and serve civil process; maintain order in courts; assist with special investigations; investigates circumstances surrounding death in cases referred to Coroner; under direction, coordinate emergency services programs and volunteer activities; and do related work as required.

Special Requirement:
Federal law and County policy requires that certain positions in the class of Deputy Sheriff I, which require a commercial driver's license and the performance of duties defined as "safety sensitive," are subject to post-offer/pre-placement/pre-duty, reasonable suspicion, post-accident, random, return-to-duty and follow-up drug and alcohol testing.

Physical Requirement:
Hearing must be normal in each ear.
Using both eyes, must have far vision of at least 20/100 without glasses, correctable to 20/20 with glasses. Must be free from color blindness and permanent abnormality in either eye.
These standards are confined to far vision and color vision. There are additional standards which may apply to other possible specific visual deficiencies.

3. Physical Agility Examination: Designed to measure an applicant's knowledge, skills, and abilities to complete exercises that replicate some aspect of the job. The examination is timed and includes the following physical examinations:

* 50 air squats (2:00 Minutes)

Physical Agility Examination Waiver: Applicants who have participated in the POST Work Sample Test Battery (WSTB) at an agency within the State of California within 6 months of the application may waive the physical agility examination portion of the examination process. Applicants must submit the official verification letter of test results AT THE TIME OF APPLICATION by uploading the document online during the application process. The minimum passing score required is 320.
4. Oral Interview: Upon successful completion of the written and physical agility assessments, applicants will be scheduled for an oral interview. This interview is designed to evaluate such job-related factors, such as motivation, interpersonal skills, problem-solving ability, use of sound judgement and oral communication skills. The interview is conducted by a Qualifications Appraisal Board who will evaluate candidates in job-related areas. This interview is typically scheduled within two weeks of the written and physical agility test dates. (Weighted 100%).
Final Testing and Final Appointment
Applicants who pass the written, physical, and oral test will be placed on the continuous Deputy Sheriff-Recruit eligibility list for twelve months. Rank on the list is determined by the oral board test score and any veteran's credit for which individual competitors may qualify. Applicants' scores are grouped into Certification Bands. Scores between 83 to 100 are placed in Band A, scores between 77 to 82.99 are placed in Band B, and scores between 70-76.99 are placed in Band C. Candidates are moved on into the background process from the list. Typically, the Sheriff's Office administers three Basic Academies per year.
Veteran's Preference Credits
Veterans who have received an honorable discharge and disabled veterans may be allowed an additional 5% of their total earned score (providing the exam is otherwise successfully completed). To obtain this credit, veterans MUST provide a DD214 that indicates the applicant received an honorable discharge or proof of disability ATTACHED TO THEIR APPLICATION AT THE TIME OF FILING.
The Human Resources Department may change the examination steps noted above in accordance with the Personnel Management Regulations and accepted selection practices.
CONVICTION HISTORY
During the background process, you will be fingerprinted, and your fingerprints will be sent to the California Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI). The resulting report of your conviction history (if any) will be used to determine whether the nature of your conviction conflicts with the specific duties and responsibilities of the position. If a conflict exists, you will be asked to present any evidence of rehabilitation that may mitigate the conflict, except when federal or state regulations bar employment in specific circumstances. Having a conviction history does not automatically preclude you from a job with Contra Costa County.
DISQUALIFYING FACTORS
In addition to the definition of disqualifying criminal acts as defined by Cal. Gov. Code § 1029, applicants who have had their POST certification suspended, revoked, or voluntarily surrendered it, due to having engaged in "Serious Misconduct" as defined by Cal. Pen. Code § 13510.8 are ineligible to be employed as a peace officer in the State of California.

CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This position is an entry-level, non-sworn position in the Police Department. Incumbents are currently attending a P.O.S.T. Basic Academy on a full-time or part-time basis and must satisfactorily pass all of the requirements that lead to the possession of the P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in addition to passing all phases of the background process before becoming candidates for the sworn position of Police Officer. This is a full-time (40 hour/week) position. Those enrolled in the Police Academy on a part-time basis (less than 40 hours/week), will make up the remaining time through work experience at the Stockton Police Department.
Appointment in this position is limited to the duration of the Police Academy. Academic progress and physical achievement are closely monitored during this training period. Upon successful completion and graduation from the Police Academy, recruits shall be appointed to the position of probationary Police Officer. Emphasis is placed on community-based policing, familiarization between law enforcement and community residents, and collaborative problem solving. An assignment to this classification is temporary. General Qualifications
Compliance with Government Code: Incumbents appointed to this class shall meet the minimum standards set forth in California Government Code, Section 1031.
POST Requirement: Incumbents in this class are required to maintain Continued Professional Training (CPT) in accordance with POST regulations.
Criminal History and Background Check: The County shall access criminal history information on candidates who have accepted a conditional offer of appointment for this class consistent with the provisions of Board of Supervisors' Resolution No. 82-602, Personnel Policies, and applicable federal and state laws. The County shall not consider for employment any candidate who has been convicted of a felony or misdemeanor that relates to or impacts the candidate's ability to perform the job duties of this class unless it is determined that mitigating circumstances exist. For purposes of accessing criminal history information, the candidate will be fingerprinted. A subsequent arrest notification may be obtained.
The County may also conduct a background check on the candidate prior to appointment to a position within this class. Attend on-going training to keep current on new laws, methods of arrest, health and safety regulations, public safety regulations.
Properly record and report information, including notification of a supervisor with any and all pertinent information.
Prepare Safety and Security surveys.
Promote Department morale.
Provide guidance to Community Service Officers, Student Assistants, Student Escorts, and other department staff.
Perform other tasks and duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
Education: Possess a high school diploma or equivalent.
Experience: Successful completion of a P.O.S.T. certified training program.
Preferred Qualifications
Prior experience in a CSU or higher education setting.
Two (2) or more years of recent experience working for a law enforcement agency.
Experience working with the Michelle Montoya School Safety Act, Title IX, Clery Act or CSU Executive Order 1107.
Prior experience working with the community, events or students.
Experience utilizing computer devices, software, programs, and other modern law enforcement technology such as TriTech, Central Square, Clips, PeopleSoft.
Prior experience with investigative techniques.
Instructor Certification in range master, field training officer, defensive tactics instruction, bicycle patrol, or community relations programs.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Working knowledge of current laws, methods and procedures.
Possess a valid California Driver's License.
Working knowledge of current criminal codes and laws.
Effective interpersonal skills to resolve a wide variety of sensitive situations.
Effective verbal and written communication skills, including writing clear and comprehensive reports.
Demonstrated ability to think and act effectively in emergency and sensitive situations
Special Conditions
The nature of the duties may also require successful completion of a background check, physical and psychological exam and/or the ability to attend Police Officers Standards & Training (P.O.S.T.) programs related to public safety support and dispatch activities.
Knowledge of and the ability to learn how to use the applicable public safety related equipment and systems are essential.
Required to work various shifts throughout the year including: days, evenings, weekends, holidays, and special events.
License or Certifications
Eligible to be a peace officer in the State of California ( as per Government Code Sections 1029 and 1031).
Possess a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
Valid California drivers license.

Officers are required to walk and move around campus throughout all buildings and facilities and respond to calls for service and self-initiated activity, perform vehicle patrols, and some office work.

Salary Range
Anticipated salary will be $6,418 - $6,875 per month plus excellent paid benefits. Salary will depend on the qualifications of the successful finalist. (Full Police Officer range: $6,418 - $9,468 per month)
