Job Summary
The Loudoun County Sheriff's Office is seeking professional, dedicated individuals who are interested in a position in law enforcement, specifically as a Field Patrol Deputy working 42-hours per week.

Crime Prevention Unit
The Deputy Sheriff typically works a 12.5-hour shift inside the Adult Detention Center. The shift options are (shift hours are subject to change):
Day Shift: 6:30 a.m. - 7:00 p.m.
Night Shift: 6:30 p.m. - 7:00 a.m.
Workdays alternating weekly (1st week, Monday, Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, & Sunday; 2nd week Wednesday, Thursday)
All shifts work approximately 15 days per month to equal 87.5 hours per two-week pay period, to include evenings, weekends, and holidays.
While working in the Adult Detention Center deputies may receive additional pay, such as night and evening differential, foreign language stipend, field training instructor stipend, holiday pay, and/or annual step increases as allowed by the county budget.
Incumbents are considered emergency essential services personnel requiring that they report on their scheduled day, or may be called back to work, should a manmade or natural disaster or emergency arise.
Academy Training hours are primarily Monday - Friday 7:00 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
*Salary will be determined within pay grade based upon relevant qualifications such as: Prior law enforcement experience (in-state and out-of-state recognized), college degree, military experience, and foreign language proficiency.
*This position includes a signing bonus for fully qualified new county employees in the amount of $15,000.

Supervises inmate activities, prevents escapes, and maintains order, discipline and security;
Takes appropriate action in emergency situations in accordance with established riot, hostage, fire, and disaster plans;

Serves warrants and makes arrests;
Gives testimony in court on actions taken during arrests and investigations in criminal matters;

Escorts prisoners to and from courts and the Adult Detention Center;
Provides on-the-job training for newer deputies;
Processes inmates in and out of the Adult Detention Center;

Directs or escorts all inmates in an assigned area;
Keeps a continual count of inmates in an assigned area;
Oversees the handling and security of inmate property;
Investigates complaints from inmates or the public concerning missing, misplaced, or mishandled inmate property;
Transports, by vehicle, inmates, and other individuals in custody;
Performs instructor duties at the Criminal Justice Academy;
Prepares and conducts roll call training;
Ensures accurate and current files are maintained on all supply transactions and office equipment repair;
Performs routine law enforcement duties as required (e.g., traffic enforcement, accident response and investigation, criminal investigations, etc.)
Maintains complete and accurate records and prepares clear and concise reports.

Employment Standards
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: high school diploma or a GED issued by a state department of education.
CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
Possession of a valid motor vehicle driver's license at the time of appointment.
The following must be obtained from the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services within one year of appointment:
Certification as a Law Enforcement Officer;
Certification as a Jailor;
Certification in Court Security/Civil Process;
Certification in firearms proficiency.
NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must be a U.S. citizen;
Must be twenty-one years old or within 180 days of 21st birthday at the time of application;
Must successfully complete a criminal background investigation, polygraph examination, and a psychological examination;

Duties and Responsibilities:

Typical assignments include:

Other Requirements:
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.

Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Formal Training: After you are hired, you will be detailed to the U.S. BorderPatrol Academy in Artesia, New Mexico, for approximately six (6) months of intensive instruction in immigration and nationality laws, law enforcement, and USBP-specific operations, driver training, physical techniques, firearms, and other courses. BorderPatrol work requires the ability to speak and read Spanish, as well as English. BorderPatrolAgents will be provided training to become proficient in the Spanish language at the Academy.

Hiring Salary: The starting salary is $60,789 per year. Virginia Law Enforcement officers/deputies are eligible to receive a higher salary based on years of service. Applicants must provide a portfolio highlighting their training, experience, and ability to investigate both administrative and criminal incidents within an educational setting. Highly qualified candidates will undergo an oral interview, followed by a conditional offer, background investigation, polygraph, physical exam, and psychological evaluation. Upon successful completion of all steps, a final interview with the Chief of Police will be conducted. Portions of the background check may be modified or waived at Chief's discretion and may be dependent on the law enforcement employment status of the applicant.
Essential Functions/Typical Tasks:
Serves as a visible, active law enforcement presence on public school campus and is responsible for ensuring safety by patrolling school grounds, responding to suspicious activity taking law enforcement action as needed. The SRO oversees their assigned school as well as its feeder elementary and middle schools.
Assumes primary responsibility for handling all calls for service from the school and coordinates the response of other police resources to the school. Investigates, or assists in investigating, crimes and incidents occurring on school property. SRO is expected to assist PD during dire needs.
Works closely with the school staff to build positive relationships and promote a better understanding of law enforcement within the school community. This includes participation in the development and implementation of school safety plans and emergency response procedures.
Conducts annual safety and security assessments of all schools and provides or coordinates safety training for students and staff, including lockdown drills, fire drills, and evacuation protocols.
Conduct courses and workshops for students, staff and parents to promote social awareness, relationship skills, self-management, self-awareness and responsible decision making. Takes lead on training such as school safety, de-escalation, drug and alcohol abuse, bullying, internet safety, Crime prevention, traffic education, law enforcement education, bullying and similar topics.
Works with the School Administration to identify school events where police presence may be necessary, such as: all night graduation party, school dances, school plays, etc. SRO will attend these events if coverage is unavailable.
Conducts truancy checks as requested by school administration. Assists in investigating possible residency fraud for the school system.
Provides informal counseling and support to students and serving as a mentor to build trust and rapport.
Fulfills all the duties and responsibilities of a police officer. Attends all required PD training and operates under the direction of the Chief of Police or their designee.
Works flexible hours based on school hours and their needs; however, they are expected to respond to emergencies on campus during or outside of school hours.
Adheres to the guidelines of the MOU with the City of Falls Church Public Schools.
SROs will assist with the departmental needs during summer breaks and extended school closures.

Minimum Qualifications
To become a Police Officer with the City of Falls Church Police Department, you must meet the minimum qualifications for law enforcement office as defined in VA Code § 15.2-1705 and other hiring requirements.
Age: must be at least 20 years and 6 months of age at the time of application and at least 21 by the date of hire.
Character/Background Assessment: applicants that continue past the exam/interview phase will undergo a comprehensive background investigation and character check. Individual situations will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis; however, a favorable driving record and a clean criminal history are essential. The police department retains the right to reject any applicant for any arrest and/or conviction that occurred at any age (unless the arrest or criminal charge against them has been expunged, pursuant to Virginia Code § 15.2-1705).
All aspects of an applicant's background are considered when making a final hiring determination, however applicants who have past or current behavior(s) as listed below may be disqualified:
Have ever engaged in any activity that would support a felony conviction

Having sold, distributed, or manufactured any prescription or illegal drugs without legal authorization.
Any previous revocation or denial of certification as Police Officer or a suspension of current certified status.
Failure to provide a fully completed, honestly reported, Personal History Statement, including intentional withholding of information on any application, interview, or paperwork associated with the position
Citizenship: must be a United States citizen. Permanent resident aliens with an application for naturalization filed and pending with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services may also be considered.
Driver's License: must possess or be able to obtain a valid driver's license by date of hire. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
Education: must have a high school diploma or passed the GED.

JOB SUMMARY: This position is primarily responsible for enforcing all local, state, and federal laws and regulations within the airport jurisdiction.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.
Assist the airlines and other Airport tenants in security and police matters as well as channeling requests to proper authorities.
Be familiar with all the rules and regulations of Norfolk International Airport as well as applicable local, state and federal laws.
Assist other law enforcement agencies in the performance of their duties when it involves the Airport premises and/or jurisdiction.
Perform such first aid as required and assist medical personnel when the need arises on Airport premises.
Assist Airport patrons in cases of emergency and distress.
Investigate disturbances, losses by theft, and make arrests when necessary.
Issue traffic citations to those patrons who violate Airport parking regulations and Virginia motor vehicle laws.
Investigate accidents, confine offenders, and turn them over to the proper authorities.
Check all parking lots regularly.
Responsible for the security of all Norfolk Airport Authority facilities.
Respond to emergency calls for police assistance and unusual occurrences that may arise on Airport premises.
Report unauthorized solicitation to the Airport Authority administration.
Answer calls from various departments within the Airport Authority with courtesy and a cooperative attitude.
Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
Administer and adhere to all Authority policies and guidelines.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES: The following generally describes the knowledge, skills and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.
Ability and willingness to work alone and at night and on weekends and holidays.
Ability to attend and complete 40-hour DCJS in-service training every two years.
Ability to meet the Commonwealth of Virginia's criteria for the issuance of a handgun permit
Ability to show initiative and judgment in noting and recording irregularities and malfunctions of Authority equipment and facilities.
Ability to exercise tact and cooperation in relationships with passengers, the general public, and Airport tenants.
Ability to adhere to all Authority personnel policies and departmental guidelines.
Ability to perform all other duties as assigned and directed.
Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
Knowledge of the physical arrangements and facilities of the Airport terminal as well as fire and safety precautions.
EDUCATION/TRAINING :
High school graduate or equivalent.
Specialized skills such as Bicycle Patrol, SWAT, Crime Prevention, Rifle Qualified, Crisis Intervention Training, Crisis Negotiation Training etc., preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
Six months of sworn basic law enforcement experience from a certified Virginia police agency to include satisfactory completion of all field training, required.
Investigative experience, to include misdemeanor, felony and traffic cases, preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS:
Commonwealth of Virginia DCJS “Basic Law Enforcement” certification.
Must maintain or be able to achieve the appropriate level of Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN) certification.
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified General Instructor, preferred.
Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified Specialty Instructor, preferred.
Firearms/Control Tactics/Driving etc.
Completed Federal Emergency Management courses ICS 100, ICS 200, ISC 700, preferred.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
No violations under VA § 15.2-1707 for decertification of a law-enforcement or jail officer.
Possess a valid driver's license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
EQUIPMENT OPERATION: Remain current and proficient in the operation of all police associated equipment to include firearms, 2- and 4-wheel drive vehicles, command vehicle, computers, portable and mobile radios, handcuffs, batons, and other equipment as required by the department.

All sworn personnel must demonstrate their ability to perform these essential functions during their annual physical examinations. Employees must be able to adjust to a varied work schedule and engage in physical confrontation when necessary to subdue violent or demented persons. Employees must be able to maintain mandated physical training as prescribed by the Criminal Justice Department, i.e., firearms and defensive tactics. Employees must be able to clearly transmit and receive any and all communications via radio, telephone, and "face to face."
WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS: Perform all law enforcement related duties under any time constraints or environmental conditions. Possess the ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions such as heat, cold, rain, snow, light and darkness.
DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS: All drivers must be at least 21 years of age, licensed for at least 3 years, have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.
License is active and NOT suspended.
Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.
An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia driver's license as long as they reside in that state.
An “unacceptable" DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:
▪ Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle
▪ DWI/DUI
▪ Drug Offense
▪ Eluding a Police Officer
▪ Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us
▪ Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident
▪ Lending an Operator's License or Registration to Another
▪ Open Container Violation
▪ Passing a Stopped School Bus
▪ Racing or Speed Contest Violation
▪ Reckless Driving
▪ Speeding 25 mph, or more, above speed limit
▪ Suspended License History - Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations
▪ Temporary Operator's Permit
▪ Two or more at fault accident convictions
▪ Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide
▪ Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months
Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.

You are not permitted to attend testing unless your registration is confirmed.

If you are hired, you will attend the April 2026 or July 2026 Law Enforcement Basic class at the Rappahannock Regional Criminal Justice Academy. Testing for candidates can also form an eligibility list for future vacancies.
Day of Testing
Be punctual. You will not be accepted after the scheduled testing time. Testing will be held at the Fredericksburg Police Department, 2200 Cowan Boulevard, Fredericksburg, VA 22401.
Be prepared. Review testing materials/videos on website. Bring your valid driver's license. All other testing materials will be provided. Bring water and snacks.
Dress appropriately. Arrive at the testing site in fitness attire and athletic shoes. Upon successful completion of the written test, you will immediately attempt the physical test. Please plan for at least two hours for written testing and four hours to complete the physical agility testing.
Unauthorized. Backpacks, bags, cell phones, smart watches or other electronic devices that access the internet are not permitted. Leave these items in your vehicle.

Already a Virginia DCJS-certified Law Enforcement Officer? Are you enrolled in the Pre-Employment Program at RRCJA? Do you have a Bachelor's Degree? Do you have military service? The entire selection process includes:
• Written exam; Physical agility and LawFit testing; Verification of previous work performance and driving history; Polygraph examination; Psychological examination; Background investigation; Police Ride-Along; Senior Panel oral review board; Interview with the Chief of Police; Medical exam.
The LawFit fitness test includes:
• One repetition of maximum weight bench press; One minute maximum sit-ups; Sit & Reach; Maximum pull-ups (pull-downs are not permitted) to exhaustion; Maximum push-ups to exhaustion; 1.5 mile run; Obstacle course in 1 minutes 36 seconds or less (video here). Minimum Requirements:
• 21 years of age by graduation of academy
• United States Citizen
• Possess a valid driver's license
• High School Diploma or GED
• One year of work experience involving public contact
• No more than two moving violations within previous 24 months
• No record of convictions within previous 60 months for DUI, eluding, leaving the scene of an accident or vehicular manslaughter
• No record of 2nd or subsequent DUI
• No current or previous revocations of suspension of license within previous 60 months due to a moving violation
• Not have been convicted of or pleaded guilty or no contest to a felony or any offense that would be a felony if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to a Class 1 or 2 misdemeanor involving moral turpitude or any offense that would be any misdemeanor involving moral turpitude, including but not limited to petit larceny under 18.2-96, or any offense involving moral turpitude that would be a misdemeanor if committed in the Commonwealth of Virginia
• Not have been convicted of or pled guilty or no contest to any misdemeanor sex offense in the Commonwealth of Virginia, another state, or the United States, including but not limited to sexual battery under 18.2-67.4 or consensual sexual intercourse with a minor 15 or older under clause (ii) of 18.2-371
