Duties and Responsibilities:
As a BPA, you will be part of our 60,000+ workforce that strives to protect the American people by safeguarding our borders, deterring illicit activity, and enhancing the nation's economic prosperity. Being a BPA makes you a valuable member of the Federal Law Enforcement Officer (LEO) profession.
Typical assignments include:
· Detecting and questioning people suspected of violating immigration and customs laws and inspecting documents and possessions to determine citizenship or violations.
· Preventing and apprehending aliens and smugglers of aliens at or near the borders by maintaining surveillance from covert positions to include using infrared scopes during night operations.
· Interpreting and following tracks, marks, and other physical evidence of illegal entry of persons or contraband.
· Performing farm checks, building checks, traffic checks, city patrols, and transportation checks.
· Patrolling the international boundary and coastal waterways using a variety of government assets such as vehicles, horses, vessels, watercraft, off-road vehicles, ATVs, snowmobiles, and motorcycles for the accomplishment of the USBP Mission.
Qualifications:
GL-9: You qualify for the GL-9 grade level if you possess one (1) year of specialized experience, equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, performing duties such as:
· Performing physical searches of detained individuals, their vehicles, and their immediate surroundings for weapons, contraband, currency, and other evidence.
· Apprehending, physically restraining, or working with law enforcement officials to identify or apprehend violators of state, federal, or immigration laws.
· Proficient in the use of firearms, preparing investigative reports, serving court orders (e.g., warrants, subpoenas, etc.), and gathering evidence for criminal cases prosecuted through the court system.
If you have previous or current law enforcement or military law enforcement experience, you may qualify at the GS-11 grade level.
GS-11: You qualify for the GS-11 grade level if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level, with the authority granted by the state or government to enforce laws, make arrests, and investigate crimes, performing primary duties in an official law enforcement capacity such as:
· Utilizing intelligence information to track illegal operations, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or contraband while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Leading investigations of fraud, contraband, criminal activity, threats to our nation, and/or illegal operations to determine sources and patterns while serving as a state, federal, or military law enforcement official.
· Apprehending violators of state, federal, or immigration laws by utilizing various forms of complex technology that include surveillance, detection, situation awareness systems, and/or communications equipment.
The above experience will be applied in connection with the following: Make arrests and exercise sound judgment in the use of firearms; deal effectively with people in a courteous manner in connection with law enforcement matters; analyze information rapidly and make prompt decisions; or develop and maintain contact with a network of informants.
There are no education substitutions for the GL-9 or GS-11 grade-level Border Patrol Agent opportunities.
Other Requirements:
Citizenship: You must be a U.S. Citizen to apply for this position.
Residency: You must have had primary U.S. residency (including protectorates as declared under international law) for at least three of the last five years.
Age Restriction: In accordance with Public Law 100-238, this position is covered under law enforcement retirement provisions. Candidates must be referred for selection to the Border Patrol Agent position before reaching their 40th birthday in accordance with Department of Homeland Security Directive 251-03. The age restriction may not apply if you are currently serving or have previously served in a federal civilian law enforcement (non-military) position covered by Title 5 U.S.C. 8336(c) or Title 5 U.S.C. 8412(d).

NATURE OF WORK
This is generalized law enforcement and public safety work in the prevention of crime, protection of life and property, and apprehension of criminal offenders.
An employee in this class of work is responsible for performing tasks of more than average difficulty involving the protection of life and property. After completion of an initial training period, the employee is responsible for enforcing federal, state and local laws, and performing related police activities. Incumbents are involved in either patrolling an assigned area in a radio-equipped vehicle, or performing administrative, communications, public information and/or complaint duties. Under general supervision of a sergeant or other police supervision, the employee is required to exercise initiative and independent judgment as well as tact, courtesy and self-control in performance of duties. The employee is also expected to make decisions calmly and quickly in emergency or hazardous situations. The Criminal Justice Testing Center is NOT a hiring agency, it is a testing center for persons wanting to enter Law Enforcement positions in Broward County. The Criminal Justice Testing Center administers the PHYSICAL AGILITY TEST (PAT), and SWIM TEST to candidates for employment in cooperation with Broward County Chiefs of Police Association. A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide Protection of life and property to all citizens on a 24-hour basis.
Essential Duties
The following duties are normal for this position. A police officer, as assigned at the discretion of the Chief of Police, may serve as a uniformed patrol officer, detective, community police officer (e.g. "Canes Resource Officer"), a directed patrol officer, canine officer, or a problem solving team officer. A police officer has the primary responsibility to provide protective and law enforcement services on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus. In addition, a police officer has responsibilities to provide special services to the University community consistent with the mission of the University and the Police Department. The police officer position is designated as essential personnel and will continue to work during periods where the University may suspend normal operations due to events such severe weather, natural disasters and/or hazardous situations.
The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment for this classification (May do some or all of these duties based upon assignment).
Additional Responsibilities:

17. Assist visitors and University employees with directions location of buildings, classes, and departments. Provide traffic and parking information.
18. Coordinate motorist assistance as appropriate, when keys are locked inside vehicle or jump starting their vehicle, or assisting with a flat tire by summoning assistance.
19. Perform administrative tasks such as delivering emergency messages, collecting lost and found items. Conduct daily safety and cleaning inspections of patrol vehicles. Delivering reports and documents to/from Coral Gables Police Department.
20. Provide escort for students, faculty, and staff as requested. Primarily conducted during hours of darkness.
21. Work special duty during University sponsored functions, athletic events, and student social activities. Duties at events include traffic control, crowd control and safety related services.

Officers carry out these responsibilities by: patrolling an assigned area; responding to emergency calls; resolving conflicts; engaging in community policing and community relations, investigating crimes; rendering medical assistance; writing reports (using, software, computers, portable technology devices, and mobile data computers); handling crises or stressful situations, which may involve juveniles, the elderly, or the disabled; testifying in court; and enforcing Florida State laws and City Ordinances. Must possess current certification as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of Florida as described under Chapter 493 of the Florida Statutes (F.S), or be currently enrolled in a State of Florida Police Academy and will have successfully completed all required profiles of that Academy and will be able to obtain a Florida Law Enforcement Certification prior to employment, or successfully completed basic recruit training at a certified Police Academy (out of state) at a certified Police Academy with the ability to obtain a certification from the State of Florida as a Law Enforcement Officer as described under Chapter 943, Florida Statutes (F.S) prior to employment.
Must meet the following minimum qualifications for employment or appointment:
* Minimum of 21 years of age on the date of hire.
* Must be a citizen of the United States.
* Must have a high school diploma or equivalent.
* College-level coursework is preferred but not required.
* Must live in Palm Beach, Broward, or Dade County within the first three (3) months of the job offer.

This is general law enforcement and public safety work in the protection of life and property and in the execution of orders issued through the authority of the City of Doral Police Department.
An employee in this classification may perform varied assignments in motorized patrol, traffic control and enforcement, accident investigation, preliminary and follow-up investigation at crime scenes, serving writs in criminal proceedings, and assisting in public safety education programs. The role of Police Officer receives assignments from the superior officers who review work methods and results through reports, inspections, and discussions. Police Officers generally works one shift per 24-hour period, but will be subject to recall to on-duty status as the department warrants. In addition, Police Officers are required to respond to any emergency and/or criminal situation that they observe while off duty and function as a Police Officer until relieved by regular on-duty units.
This position requires to act without direct supervision and exercise independent judgment in meeting emergencies; situations often arise where the Police Officer will have the responsibility for making decisions regarding the use of deadly force in protecting citizens and themselves without the opportunity for prior supervisory advice or assistance.
Essential Functions:
* Patrols the City of Doral area in a radio equipped car or motorcycle to preserve law and order.
