Boston Dynamics company history timeline

1992

The company was founded in 1992, when Raibert was still working in the LegLab laboratory at MIT. Other experts from the lab also joined the company.

Marc Raibert is the brain behind the company, and it all started as a spin-off from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, in 1992.

2004

Big Dog was created in 2004, and it was deemed "the world's most ambitious legged robot" by then.

2005

Boston Dynamics gained recognition outside professional circles after introducing their four-legged BigDog robot in 2005, which had been commissioned by DARPA.

2009

It was specifically developed to test special suits used by the US Army to protect themselves from chemical warfare agents. It is the humanoid robot unveiled in 2009.

2012

With the global market for robotics predicted to reach $87 billion by 2025, the market potential for robots is really huge. For example, SoftBank acquired the Aldebaran Robotics in 2012, which built the interactive and emotionally intelligent robot, Pepper.

2013

The model was first introduced in 2013.

In 2013, Boston Dynamics developed a free-running version of cheetah and named it WildCat.

2014

But in October 2014, i.e., within a year of forming the Robotic Division, Andy Rubin Left Google leaving behind a leadership vacuum in Replicant.

Things took an unexpected turn when he left the company in 2014, just shortly after the acquisitions and the optimist plans, due to allegations of sexual misconduct from at least two employees of the company, according to a report from the New York Times.

2015

In January 2015, the co-founder of Replicant, James Kuffner also left the company.

In June 2015, SoftBank announced its plan to set up a joint venture with Alibaba and Foxconn Technology to sell Pepper across the world.

2016

The news that Google is willing to sell Boston Dynamics had been doing the rounds since March 2016.

In the video released in 2016, the 5′ 9″ tall Atlas can be seen walking over uneven terrains.

2018

In February 2018, the robot was seen opening a door using its claw, while in another video, it was opening a door despite human resistance.

2020

As there is a lot of fear about the new robotic revolution and loss of jobs in the future.One study from Gartner Research states that while 1.8 million jobs will be lost by 2020, 2.3 million new ones will be created.

2021

In June 2021, Hyundai Motor Group acquired a majority interest in Boston Dynamics and now holds an 80 percent stake in the company.
