    Under the general supervision of the Laboratory Support Services Supervisor, the LST is responsible for providing quality customer oriented laboratory services including specimen procurement, specimen processing and related specialized procedures, and service to effectively communicate information to users of the Laboratory Services in order to ensure the department is able to operate efficiently and to successfully fulfill its mission. LSTs also provide training and guidance to less experienced laboratory support technicians. Position: Lab Support Tech Department: Lab Support Service - NP Schedule: Part Time JOB REQUIREMENTS EDUCATION: High School Diploma. EXPERIENCE: One year of Phlebotomy, EKG, and/or specimen processing experience is preferred. CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, AND REGISTRATIONS: Phlebotomy Certification (ASCP) preferred. Compensation Range: $20.12- $26.02 This range offers an estimate based on the minimum job qualifications. Labels and prioritizes specimens (e.g., STAT, STROKE, CSF) accurately. 3. Transports specimens promptly and redistributes them per protocol. Work Area Organization 1. Maintains a clean and organized drawing station or cart. 2. Restocks supplies at the end of each shift. 3. Keeps patient orders accessible and organized. Specimen Registration 1. Registers all courier-delivered specimens accurately and efficiently. 2. Troubleshoots printer issues as needed. Computer and Test Ordering Support 1. Demonstrates mastery of hospital information systems. 2. Orders tests accurately using knowledge of test dictionaries and panels. 3. Communicates with departments for clarification when needed. Telephone Support 1. Answers and transfers calls courteously and efficiently. 2. Ensures coverage for incoming calls at all times. Capillary Collection 1. Performs heel sticks and PKU collections proficiently. 2. Ensures proper sample volume and quality. Resource Utilization 1. Adapts to workflow changes and staffing needs. 2. Major Responsibilities: General: Receives specimens from couriers and checks manifests to verify appropriate count. Logs and assigns accession numbers to specimens and requisitions received. Performs a variety of routine duties to assist in laboratory processes, such as, preparing reagents and stains, preparing slides and specimens, disposal of biohazardous waste, collecting occasional specimens from outreach patients at Biotech I, etc. Performs assigned duties to ensure, an adequate inventory of supplies for assigned area. Monitors inventory levels and stores equipment and supplies in a neat and orderly manner. May place orders for supplies when needed. Maintains accurate records of processes performed, using manual and computer-based systems. Communicates with lead or supervisory personnel regarding unusual problems. Complies with all laboratory quality, health and safety policies, regulations and requirements and with established departmental policies, procedures and objectives. Attends variety of meetings, conferences, seminars as required or directed. Inputs ICD 9 codes or diagnosis information provided by physician's offices, clinics, and other health care organization into abstract module of the Meditech Billing Accounts Receivable system. Arterial Blood Gases: Performs routine and automated technical procedures and required quality control procedures such as arterial blood gases under supervision; cleans and prepares glassware for analytical testing. Logs results into Laboratory Information System (LIS), enters blood gas data and other patient findings for interpretation and transmits results to requesting department, checks results for accuracy based upon pre-defined laboratory criteria. Maintains equipment during shift including necessary calibration and cleaning to assure accurate results; performs minor repairs as necessary. Notifies supervisor of any equipment failures requiring service. Cytogenetics: Autoclaves and washes glassware. Enters patient information as well as laboratory findings, and results into the cytogenetics database. Processes all Alpha Feto Protein (AFP) profile samples, including accessioning, registration, centrifugation, packaging, resulting, copying and mailing. Microbiology: Plants specimens on correct media and incubate them properly. Send Outs: Prepares specimens to be sent to referral laboratories; obtains proper detailed information pertaining to sample requirements such as: packaging, test codes, requesting physician, appropriate specimen type and volume needed, test code, shipping information. Completes necessary requisitions and stores specimens as required. Reviews Outstanding Specimen Logs (OSR) to assure all referral tests have been obtained. Communicates with lead or supervisory personnel regarding any unusual problems. Reviews monthly statements from referral laboratories for appropriateness and accuracy of patient/test/billing.
