Under the supervision of the Nurse Manager, provides medical/nursing support functions to provider staff in ambulatory setting. This includes performance of specimen procurement (phlebotomy) and related specialized procedures according to BMC policy and procedures base on standards set by the American Association of MedicalAssistants (AAMA).

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
Performs duties to assist the clinical staff in safe, efficient delivery of patient care.
1.0 Patient Care Duties.
1.1 Obtains and documents required patient information, including but not limited to: age, weight, address, next of kin, etc.
1.2 Timely notifies clinical staff of any changes or unusual findings relative to patient information and/or unit functioning.
1.3 Assists clinical staff during procedures and exams, including but not limited to: performing room set-ups, assisting patients with preparation steps (e.g., dressing/undressing, etc.), handing of instruments/ supplies, acting as a chaperon, holding or restraining patient, etc.
1.4 Instructs patients/families as directed by clinical staff, including but not limited to: explaining procedures, reinforcing discharge/procedure/instructions, etc.
1.5 Obtains EKG when ordered.
1.6 Performs phlebotomy/obtains specimens as ordered, and prepares blood samples/specimens for ordered tests completing required order forms/labels, and arranging for and/or delivering specimens to appropriate labs/drop off points.
1.7 Reviews charts for accuracy and completeness, including but not limited to obtaining and documents/files, lab/test results, interviews patient, completes pre-procedure/or checklist, retrieves/calls for old records, etc.
1.8 Schedules appointments and/or procedures/surgeries to ensure efficient patient care.
1.9 Transport/escort patients/families as needed to ensure efficient patient care.
1.10 Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age groups of patients regularly served; notifies clinical staff when patients in age groups not regularly served are present.
1.11 Obtains and documents pulse, respiration, blood pressure, weight and height.
2.0 Performs a variety of clerical and support duties to promote/ensure efficient area operations.
2.1 Answers the telephone and patient/visitor inquiries, identifying unit, self and role; responds to caller/patient/visitor needs within the scope of role, or takes and delivers messages in a timely manner; seeks assistance from the clinical staff when appropriate.
2.2 Prepares records for clinic session including re-filing at close of session.
2.3 Obtains and enters charge information.
2.4 Orders, stocks and organizes area equipment, supplies and materials in accordance with budget/par levels.
2.5 Performs related general office duties including but not limited to, taking inventory, picking up and delivering correspondence, photocopying, etc.
2.6 Checks and cleans area equipment including but not limited to, performing safety and quality testing, etc.
2.7 Performs exam/procedure room turnover between patient visits/procedures including but not limited to: cleaning, restocking, etc.
2.8 Identifies emergency/urgent situations and initiates appropriate response actions within the scope of her/his role, including but not limited to, immediately notifying clinical staff of medical emergencies, initiating "CODE" procedures, etc.
2.9 Acts in a manner that protects confidentiality of patient, employee, and hospital information at all times.
3.0 Work Rules, Standards, and Competency Compliance: Acts in a manner that supports a positive and collaborative work environment and that is congruent with established standards, policies, procedures and regulations.
3.1 Works cooperatively and constructively with all staff members and takes appropriate steps to effectively resolve interpersonal conflicts seeking assistance from her/his supervisor when needed.
3.2 Seeks out and acts upon constructive feedback regarding daily performance and works toward achieving goals identified during performance evaluations.
3.3 Participates in staff meetings/initiates including appropriate quality improvement and education activities, or if unable to attend non-mandatory activities, accepts responsibility to review meeting minutes and become knowledgeable of issues discussed.
3.4 Complies with established practice standards, policies, procedures, protocols, guidelines, and regulations, e.g., DPH, Joint Commission, fire codes, OSHA, etc.
3.5 Consistently adheres to attendance, safety, and infectious disease control policies/standards, consistently available on the unit.
3.6 Remains knowledgeable and follows appropriate policies, procedures and work rules, including but not limited to, policy regarding hours of work, absenteeism and tardiness.
3.7 Participates in ongoing educational activities to maintain technical competency and update requisite skills in his/her area of responsibilities; maintains required competencies.
3.8 Attends in-services on new equipment, procedures and programs; maintains accurate annual education record.
3.9 Completes annual mandatory educational requirements, e.g., safety regulation and infection control standard review, departmental and unit specific competencies, etc.
3.10 Maintains a presentable appearance in accordance with dress code requirements, including wearing visible hospital I.D. badge that identifies self as a MedicalAssistant.
3.11 Assists in orientation of new staff; serves as a resource to float staff.
3.12 Adapts to changing patient and unit needs, including but not limited to, offers assistance to other team members, floating, adjusting assignments, etc.
3.13 Collaborates with charge nurse/nurse manager/supervisor to coordinate break periods with unit activities.
3.14 Delivers care in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner that is sensitive to and demonstrates respect for patient diversity.
3.15 Organizes care to function efficiently, effectively uses hospital resources, i.e., equipment, supplies, personnel, etc., and completes assignments within an appropriate time frame.
OTHER DUTIES:
4.1 Utilizes hospital's attributes of RESPECT as the basis for decision making and to facilitate the division's hospital mission.
4.2 Follows established hospital infection control and safety procedures.
4.3 Performs all other related duties as assigned.
JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
High School Diploma/GED.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Completion of a MedicalAssistant Training program - Required
BLS CPR Certification - Preferred
CMA (Certified MedicalAssistant) preferred.
EXPERIENCE:
2 years of service work experience in a health care setting strongly preferred.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
* Ability to pass clinical competency testing.
* Ability to effectively speak, read and write using the English language; Additional language skills (beyond that of English) in languages appropriate to the patient populations served by the Medical Center are a plus.
* Ability to perform basic math and quantitative measurements, e.g., obtain height and weight, abdominal girths, measure urine output, calorie counts, etc.
* Ability to enter and retrieve computerized information/data.
* Physical ability to push, transfer, and pull heavy loads (e.g., independently transport average-sized patient via wheelchair and stretcher, etc.) throughout assigned shift.
* Physical ability to meet core job requirements in accordance with practice setting demands for the patient populations regularly served.
* Effective interpersonal skills to interact appropriately with nursing staff, patients, families/visitors, physicians, and other hospital staff.
* Organizational skills to set priorities and efficiently complete assigned work.
* Ability to accurately interpret and utilize basic medical terminology and abbreviations.
* Ability to manage stress related to patient care issues, and changing organizational climate and personnel issues.
Compensation Range:
$24.09- $28.22

10. Follows procedures for arriving patients and scheduling appointments.
11. Assists with patient admissions, transfers, and discharge procedures.
12. Maintains assigned office and/or clinical supplies. Assure accurate inventory of supplies based on approved levels. Rotate stock as required. Initiate requisitions for re-supply or special items.
13. Maintains logs, organizes patient care chart, and/or maintains medical records. May enter data or retrieve medical information from the electronic medical record.
14. Processes prescription and refills as directed per procedure.
15. Performs a variety of clerical duties per office/clinic protocol such as typing, filing, scheduling appointments, generating letters and form preparation, receiving/returning/directing phone calls per office/clinic protocol, and documenting in patient record as required or directed.
16. Collaborates with insurers to verify coverage, eligibility and coverage, prior authorizations for procedures, medications, and tests as needed. Follow guidelines established by insurers to ensure that pre-authorization, pre-certification, and clinician referrals for treatment are obtained prior to patient visits.
17. Collects co-payments from patients for visits and maintain records.

Hand dexterity, hearing and vision ability to take direction from a patient or provider, adjust equipment, observe and describe patient observations. Must be able to lift, up to 50 pounds. Work is of medium demand, standing and walking most of the time with the possibility of pushing heavy equipment and bending frequently.

This includes medical/nursing support to provider staff in the ambulatory setting, prepping the patient and seeing them through the entirety of their visit.

ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES / DUTIES:
* Rooms patient and prepares the patient for the provider visit.
* Take vital signs as necessary. Responsible for accurate blood pressure, temperature, pulse, pulse oximetry, weight, height, respiratory rates and entering accurately into EMR.
* Records of patient history, chief complaint, pharmacy information, prescription list, into EMR for physical.
* Obtains required consents, completes required forms as needed for specific visit types.
* Performs in-office testing and EKGs as needed. Required to perform controls on specific in-office tests.
* Assists provider with in-office medical procedures.
* Properly label all specimens, adhering to BMC policy.
* Chaperones Providers as required.
* Administers vaccines and medications as ordered by provider, adhering to BMCHS practice policies.
* Responsible to follow TCM (Transitional Care Management), CCM (Chronic Care Management) and RPM (Remote Patient Monitoring) workflows if active in the practice.
* Stocks rooms and monitors expiration dates of exam room supplies.
* Monitors and logs medication/vaccine refrigerator temperatures.
* Assists with incoming calls as needed by answering, triaging, and routing telephone calls appropriately as needed.
* Follows scheduling rules and direct schedules of patient visits in other BMC practices.
* Reviews schedules (clinical pre-visit review) to ensure the provider has what the patient visits for. Example: results, consult notes, hospital notes etc. If not available, contact facility or other practice to obtain them.
* Schedules patient appointments and appropriate testing as ordered by provider upon check out from appointments or any other time as requested.
* Performs outreach to select patient groups as directed for patient care and quality and then schedule specialty appointments and testing as required.
* Responsible for informing manager of clinical supply needs or assisting with ordering.
* Responsible for obtaining prior authorizations and/or insurance referrals as per practice need.
* Essential phlebotomy skills required including technical abilities like venipuncture and specimen handling, and soft skills such as communication, empathy, and attention to detail, sterilizing instruments, and medical supply inventory
* Works assigned tasks per electronic medical record task list.
* Other duties and responsibilities as assigned

Compensation Range:
