JOB REQUIREMENTS
EDUCATION:
Must be a graduate of an approved school that fulfills the ARRT requirements for primary or secondary pathway education in MRI.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS REQUIRED:
Must be ARRT registered.
BLS required.
MRI Advanced Certification required or obtained within one year of employment.
EXPERIENCE:
Experience in MRI preferred.
MRI specific classroom experience a plus.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:
Knowledge of cross sectional anatomy and medical terminology with the analytical skills to effectively utilize knowledge towards imaging processes, techniques and procedures.
Working knowledge of Radiology Information Systems (RIS) and Hospital Information Systems (HIS).
Ability to rely on experience, judgment and time management skills to plan and accomplish goals.
Must present a positive, team oriented attitude and a professional appearance.
Ability to adhere to safety standards set forth by the Radiology Department, BMC and other regulatory agencies.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills sufficient to interact effectively with patients and all/any apprehensions, to instruct students and to interact with other staff technologists.
Ability to work cooperatively with members of the healthcare delivery team and staff, ability to handle frequent interruptions and adapt to changes in workload and work schedule; to set priorities and solve problems; to respond quickly to emergency requests.

Job Summary
Under general supervision, the MRI technologist will safely perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies using a magnetic resonance imaging system. The scope of the MRI technologist includes preparing patients, positioning, setting imaging parameters, acquiring images, performing computer processing, and displaying images. The MRI technologist selects appropriate imaging protocols for patient studies and performs quality assurance scans as required. The MRI technologist demonstrates the ability to work cohesively as a team member within the MRI Department and consults appropriate content experts as needed. (ie radiologist, nurse, child life specialist) Staff must demonstrate the ability to rotate to MRI scanners across the assigned department as needed. Staff must be available to work occasional overnight shifts as well as holidays, as deemed necessary by the department, with the exception of per-diem technologists.
Per Joint Commission (JC) guidelines, confirms patient name, date of birth, medical record number, and MRI exam ordered with each patient.
Demonstrates ability to prepare patient, positions for exam, set imaging parameters per protocol, perform computer processing, and displays images at request for both clinical and research patients. Must be competent in managing ambulatory/outpatient patients needing MRI exams with and without contrast.
Inserts IV catheters as need and prepares for and performs intravenous injection of MR contrast agents to include the use of the MR compatible power injector. Understands and can communicate the possible contraindications as well as monitor for and respond to adverse reactions to MR contrast agents. Records all information regarding contrast injections appropriately in electronic medical record (EMR) Performs point of care testing (POCT) where applicable.
Instructs patients and visitors on MRI safety procedures and ensures adherence to safety policies by all persons entering the MRI area. Functions as final check point, prior to scanning, for patient safety and protocol clarification per department policy. In addition, Identifies hazardous system malfunctions; secures area and removes patients and personnel from magnet bay during emergency situations.
Performs scheduled quality control procedures on MRI scanner and other related equipment. Records QA results as required. Reports any potential equipment related problems to supervisor as necessary.
Assists Practice Assistant and other department staff in various duties as necessary (i.e. scheduling and transporting patients, taking stock inventory, filing, etc.).

Responsibilities
* Adheres to established departmental policies and procedures; fosters communication and collaboration among the clinical, technical and support staff; ensures that business and patient information is properly handled according to Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) guidelines.

* Prior to allowing anyone to enter the MRI exam room, carefully and completely screen all patients and others entering the MRI scan room, for any safety issues or contraindications regarding the specifics of being in a strong magnetic environment.
* Ensures that all appropriate regulatory, accreditation, and institutional requirements are met, and participates in departmental and institutional quality assurance/quality improvement (QA/QI) programs.
* Communicates relevant information in a compassionate and professional manner to patients undergoing procedures, ensures that all patients have a thorough understanding of the procedures to be performed, assist with various operational duties such as monitoring patient flow while utilizing the scheduling and electronic medical record (EMR) systems.
* Under the direction of the MRI Manager/Supervisor, the MRI technologist performs all technical procedures within their respective modality obtaining high quality patient scans; is involved with and performs all technical protocol duties as required for departmental research; establishes intravenous access; administers imaging contrast agents in accordance with applicable regulatory accreditation (e.g., ACR) and as directed by protocol under the supervision of the radiologist; ensures that all imaging systems operate at levels of accepted standards and are properly maintained, and if necessary takes corrective action; performs required quality control on all imaging equipment and devices; performs computer acquisitions and analysis as required; manages imaging datasets (e.g., transfer, archive, and retrieval); maintains all necessary records and reports in a correct, timely, and efficient manner.
* Provides training and shares best practices with newly hired staff, peers, and students.
* Performs all other duties and responsibilities as directed.
Qualifications
* Current ARRT (RT-MR) or ARMRIT (RT-MR, ARMRIT) registration at the time of hire or must obtain within 1 year of hire
* If no ARRT (RT-MR) certification at the time of hire, a current ARRT Radiography (RT-R) registration and/or current ARRT Nuclear Medicine Technology (RT-N) registration and/or current NMTCB Nuclear Medicine Technology (CNMT) registration is required
* Current BLS certification or must obtain an active BLS certification within 90-days of hire.

* Inserts IV catheters as needed and prepares for and performs intravenous injection of MR contrast agents, including the use of the MR-compatible power injector. Records all information regarding contrast injections appropriately in the electronic medical record (EMR). Performs point-of-care testing (POCT) where applicable.
* Instructs patients and visitors on MRI safety procedures and ensures adherence to safety policies by all persons entering the MRI area. Functions as a final checkpoint, prior to scanning, for patient safety and protocol clarification per department policy. In addition, identifies hazardous system malfunctions; secures the area and removes patients and personnel from the magnet bay during emergency situations.

Job Summary
Under general supervision, the MRI technologist will safely perform magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies using a magnetic resonance imaging system. The scope of the MRI technologist includes preparing patients, positioning, setting imaging parameters, acquiring images, performing computer processing, and displaying images. The MRI technologist selects appropriate imaging protocols for patient studies and performs quality assurance scans as required. The MRI technologist demonstrates the ability to work cohesively as a team member within the MRI Department and consults appropriate content experts as needed. Must be competent in performing routine outpatient exams with and without contrast. Must show the ability to optimize scan parameters due to patient condition to maintain diagnostic quality. Must manage MRI safety components for all exams and participate in clinical care coordination.
Inserts IV catheters as need and prepares for and performs intravenous injection of MR contrast agents to include the use of the MR compatible power injector. Understands and can communicate the possible contraindications as well as monitor for and respond to adverse reactions to MR contrast agents. Records all information regarding contrast injections appropriately in electronic medical record (EMR) Performs point of care testing (POCT) where applicable.
Instructs patients and visitors on MRI safety procedures and ensures adherence to safety policies by all persons entering the MRI area. Functions as final check point, prior to scanning, for patient safety and protocol clarification per department policy. In addition, Identifies hazardous system malfunctions; secures area and removes patients and personnel from magnet bay during emergency situations.
Performs scheduled quality control procedures on MRI scanner and other related equipment. Records QA results as required. Reports any potential equipment related problems to supervisor as necessary.
Assists other department staff in various duties as necessary (i.e. scheduling and transporting patients, taking stock inventory, filing, etc.).

Thorough knowledge of normal cross sectional anatomy
Certification/Licensure:
ARRT eligible and/or Certification as an MR Tech through 2 year school program and ARRT eligible
Training:
Additional MR specific didactic training preferred
Special Qualifications
:
Must have and maintain BLS certification or obtain certification within three (3) months of hire date
Must obtain required CEU hours to maintain state licensure and national registration
