1890

A German company developed a method in 1890 for using waste cork.

1892

In 1892, the mass produced cork lined crown cap lid ( better known as a bottle cap) was invented by American William Painter, who became very wealthy from his invention.

1903

In 1903, cork stoppers with natural cork discs and a body of agglomerate first appeared.

1955

1956

In 1956, 20 bottles of vintage 1789 wine were found with corks in them, most notably the corks were in fine condition and the wine well-preserved.

1974

In 1974, a coup was staged by junior officers in the Portuguese armed forces, they overthrow the fascist regimes.

1976

Following the April 1976 election, Portugal began a long, slow return to some form of stability.

1982

George Taber notes that in 1982, Terry Lee visited Portugal for the first time and was ‘appalled by what he found’. He wrote that chlorine was still being used to wash cork, raw bark was left out in the open for weeks and mould grew freely.

1987

In recent decades, various initiatives have emerged aimed at research and the definition of international standards for the cork industry, including the Confédération Européenne du Liège (C.E. Liège), founded in 1987.

1996

Formed by cork federations from various countries, this organization presented in 1996 the International Code of Cork Stopper Manufacturing Practice, a key document for quality control in the production of cork stoppers.

2003

Having worked for Mars for 12 years, Dominique joined the Diam company (not at that time named Diam) in 2003.

2017

From a continental prospective, European producers generated the highest dollar sales of exported cork products in 2017, or 93% of the global total.
