1979

Modest Beginnings in 1979

1982

By 1982, the Lowenthals began to wholesale some of their own reproductions, including their very successful duck decoys.

1984

In 1984 he designed a 12" fully jointed wool bear and named it after his newborn son, Matthew.

Gary soon began making reproduction duck decoys which led to him making small resin houses called “The Gnomes Homes” in 1984.

1987

In 1987, the firm relocated to Gettysburg, Pennsylvania and the company continued to grow.

1994

In 1994, Boyds unveiled The Folkstone Collection, a line of nontraditional whimsical figurines with folk art themes.

1996

In 1996, the Boyds Bears Company started their own official fan club called the “Loyal Order of Friends of Boyds” or better known as the FOBs.

The club grew quickly and had over 100,000 members in 1996.

1997

In the fall of 1997, Boyds expanded the Dollstone Collection and introduced its first two porcelain dolls.

1998

In April 1998, Kohlberg Kravis Roberts (KKR), a private investment firm and one of the oldest buyout firms in New York, invested over $600 million in the company.

In 1998, one of Boyds' porcelain dolls was a runner-up in the NALED (National Association of Limited Edition Dealers) Achievement Awards.

By 1998, Boyds' distribution network included over 19,350 independent gift and collectible retailers, which represented over 23,500 individual stores.

In 1998, Boyds had a waiting list of about 5,500 resin dealers, most of whom were already plush dealers who had expressed an interest in selling Boyds resin figurines.

1999

Kohlberg Kravis Roberts firm bought over half of the interest in the Boyds Bear company, and in 1999 Boyds Bears’ stock was publicly traded.

2008

Enecso, a large American company which specializes in the sales and distribution of a variety of giftware and collectible, acquired the Boyds Bear Company in 2008.
