In 1801 General Meigs moved to east Tennessee to serve as the United States military agent to the Cherokee nation.
General Meigs served in the Revolutionary War and was an aide to General Andrew Jackson in the War of 1812.
In 1830 Congress passed the Indian Removal Act, striking a significant blow to the relations between the United States and the Cherokee nation.
Following the Indian Removal Act of 1831, Meigs IV accompanied his wife West on the Trail of Tears.
Georgia (1832) determined that the Cherokee nation was independent from the United States and that the state of Georgia had no jurisdiction over Cherokee lands.
In 1836 Bradley County, Tennessee was established.
In 1842, after a vote among its citizens, Bradley County reported to the Tennessee State Legislature that this would be the site of the city of Cleveland.
In 1844 the Democratic Party of Cleveland was established.
Cleveland’s first railway mail system was established in 1868, thereby connecting its communications to the major cities of Tennessee and the United States at-large.
