Brevard Music Center company history timeline

1936

Founded in 1936, the Brevard Music Center is one of the oldest and finest summer music institutions in the country.

In 1936 James Christian Pfohl opened a summer band camp for boys on the campus of Davidson College in North Carolina.

1944

1944 - Pfohl moved his school to its present location in Brevard, North Carolina.

1945

In 1945 Pfohl moved his camp to a beautiful site just outside the town of Brevard in Western North Carolina, and the now coeducational Transylvania Music Camp was born.

1946

1946 - The first Brevard Music Festival, with James Christian Pfohl as Artistic Director, was presented in August as an appendix to the Music Camp season.

1955

1955 - The Transylvania Music Camp was renamed to Brevard Music Center.

1964

1964 - The 1,800 seat, open-air, Whittington-Pfohl Auditorium opens.

1965

In 1965, Henry Janiec succeeded James Christian Pfohl as Artistic Director.

1966

1966 - Brevard Music Center welcomes its first international students from Central America.

1993

1993 - John Candler becomes the first President and CEO after years as the Chairman of the BMC Board of Trustees.

1995

1995 - Completion of the Burt Alumni House, a project providing high-quality housing for Guest Artists during their summer residencies.

1996

Janiec retired in 1996 and BMC's opera company was renamed the Janiec Opera Company in his honor.

1997

David Effron became Artistic Director in 1997.

2007

2007 - Keith Lockhart, a Brevard Music Center alumnus, becomes the fourth Artistic Director.

2008

In 2008 Keith Lockhart becomes Artistic Advisor of the Brevard Music Center.

2021

2021 - Inaugural Season and Opening of the Parker Concert Hall.
