Although Briarwood was founded in 1960, we’ve had only two Senior Pastors in all that time.
In 1961, when Connor, Waggoner Sr. and Hanes allowed the Ku Klux Klan a "15- or 20-minute" window to attack the Freedom Riders, Jabo Waggoner was 24 years old.
SEPTEMBER 29, 1963 First worship service in Highway 280 facility.
Meet state Senator J.T. "Jabo" Waggoner, the 80-year-old powerbroker who has served in the Alabama Legislature since 1963.
1966 Briarwood’s first World Missions Conference.
DECEMBER 4, 1973 First General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America [PCA] held at Briarwood Presbyterian Church.
So those churches banded together to form the PCA. While this might sound like a pre-Civil War origin story, this did not take place in the antebellum South--this was 1973.
JANUARY 1988 First Worship Service at I-459/Acton Road location.

2011 “For Coming Generations” campaign begun for youth and children’s expansion projects.
May 11, 2012 The Barn opens for Youth Ministries.
In 2012, at a PCA General Assembly, Briarwood's Tom Leopard condemned Disney for its views on homosexuality.
March 31, 2013 The Children’s Auditorium addition to the main campus opens.
The PCA did finally ask for forgiveness and apologize for its racist past--in 2016.
