15 bridge engineer skills for your resume and career
1. Autocad
- Prepared AutoCAD drawings for final design, sketch plans and presentations for several bridge and highway projects.
- Provided site investigations of structural foundations, produced AutoCAD drawings, and made structural recommendations regarding number of piers needed.
2. Structural Analysis
A structural analysis is a type of method or process determining the condition and situation of a particular structure. Engineers, architect and other related professional often use it to study and review the behavior, dynamics, issues, and failures encountered during a project. It is the key to engineering design structure that identifies the system's performance and integrity and its effect. The purpose of the analysis is to assess the stresses, deformations, acceleration, internal forces, and stability.
- Perform complex structural analysis to determine structural behavior when necessary and to mentor /guide younger engineers.
- Analyze timber/concrete members of repair using structural analysis software in order to determine design adequacy.
3. AASHTO
- Analyzed bridge structures for deficiencies following the AASHTO code using hand calculations and software.
- Design Criteria for Curved Metal Bridges Based on AASHTO Specifications.
4. Structural Design
- Checked detailed structural design calculation for the lateral bracing, and the steel strut columns.
- Lead the structural design team through the successful completion of the I-17 Design Build Project.
5. Rehabilitation
- Performed Bridge Maintenance and Rehabilitation workshops.
- Selected rehabilitation or replacement candidates.
6. Design Calculations
- Implemented Quality Control review procedures for design calculations checking and plans preparation.
- Prepared design calculations including seismic analysis for all structural elements.

9. Design
- Interfaced with both parties communicating design intent and recommending modifications to original as bid design.
- Developed a thorough knowledge of MassDOT design requirements and project development procedures.
10. Retaining Walls
- Designed bridge-related structures such as retaining walls, ornamental fences and highway signs.
- Designed retaining walls along various parts of the path.
11. MDX
- SPLICE AT PIER for steel plate girders and steel box girders using MDX software and with the help of NSBA.
- Lead designer for 108 deep web steel plate girders using MDX.
12. Design Drawings
- Performed field verification inspections to assist in preparation of design drawings.
- Reviewed third party design drawings and suggested modifications to suite existing field conditions.
13. Design Criteria
- Crafted, implemented and documented structural requirements and developed design criteria and construction specifications to build system design.
- Prepared calculation notes for foundations & structures and prepared engineering specifications and design criteria.
14. Inspection Reports
An inspection report is a written document provided after a thorough evaluation of a specific procedure/ process.
- Prepared bridge inspection reports using Microsoft Word and Bentley's InspectTech to maintain accurate historical condition records of each bridge.
- Compiled routine, special and in-depth of bridge inspection reports using Bentley InspectTech software.
15. ODOT
- Performed shop drawings for review with the ODOT Bridge Review Program.

General reading about technologies or reading available articles about subjects the graduate is interested in will help generate questions they can ask potential graduate schools. This time would also be a chance to improve areas where the graduate may feel weak while an undergraduate. Many online resources can help them brush up on week background topics. Do not worry about transfer credits because that is usually not helpful in graduate school, but improve knowledge and experience in areas where the graduate feels weak. If the graduate has identified a graduate school and program to study in, the graduate school might have some recommendations about what to review. All of this will help improve success in graduate school.
If the next step is a job with a company or lab, taking courses to improve communication will help. Many technically competent or even technically brilliant people struggle with effective communication. Techniques about writing reports, making oral presentations, or communicating technical information will help improve success. The gap year also provides time to investigate technologies that the graduate wants to be involved in and the companies or labs in those areas.
Once the graduate has identified areas of interest and companies or labs that the graduate might want to work for, they can be contacted to either answer questions or point the graduate in a direction for further investigation.
In either case, a gap year can provide a chance to refine the graduate's choice for the next steps and help them prepare other skills overlooked during the undergraduate years.
