Black Rock Elementary School is located in one of the historic sections of Bridgeport, CT. The first public Black Rock School was built in 1841 and was located at the intersection of Grovers Avenue and Black Rock Avenue.
Originally all eight grades were taught there, with four grades on each floor. It was customary at that time to have two door entrances - one for the boys and one for the girls.The second public Black Rock School was built circa 1865 at the intersection of Brewster Street and Grovers Avenue.
The Bridgeport Public Library was officially founded in 1881 as the result of action of the Connecticut General Assembly and the Bridgeport City Council.
Beardsley Elementary School was built in 1903.
An annual event was all grades posing for their school pictures.The present Black Rock School site was built in 1905.
Originally named the Huntington Road School, the PTA successfully petitioned in 1922 to have the school renamed in honor of James Beardsley who had donated much land to the city.
The current Burroughs Library Building opened to the public on April 25, 1927 culminating a two year construction process.
In 1942, Miss Dorsey became principal and 232 students attended their first session at the new Edison School.
They are commemorated by yet another (but smaller) plaque which reads “The 1967 renovation of the ground floor was made possible through funds donated by Virginia and Marie Soules in memory of their parents Blaise and Elizabeth Soules.”
Judge Saden had been a member of the Library Board of Directors since 1993.
The Library developed a new long range plan which was adopted by the Library’s Board of Directors in November 2000.
Opened in August 2008, Geraldine W. Johnson School accomodates approximately 750 students in grades PreK-8th.
In 2015 a new wing was completed including 8 new state of the art classrooms for Kindergarten and 1st grade.
