Bronx House history

So, in 1913 the Highlanders baseball team started playing at the Manhattan Polo Grounds where the team was again renamed– this time as the New York Yankees .

The home was built about four stories high and of limestone following Freedman's death in 1915.

In 1923, Yankee Stadium was opened at East 161st Street and River Avenue as the home of the New York Yankees.

And it was in 1934 that the historic theater began earning the fame it has today, by becoming the showcase for African American musical and theatrical legends.

After a 1941 City Charter change gave jurisdiction over Bronx inmates to the NYC DOC, the River Ave. jail became City Prison Bronx and later the Bronx House of Detention.

After restoration, the house was opened in 1968 as the Museum of Bronx History.

In 1977, The Bronx became a national symbol of urban crisis when President Jimmy Carter walked on the rubble of destroyed apartment houses and sportscaster Howard Cosell announced that “The Bronx is burning” during a nationally televised World Series game at Yankee Stadium.

The SummerStage concert in St Mary's Park featured Lisa / Lisa who hit the national scene in 1985, in the year before she turned 20.

By 2000 Puerto Ricans accounted for a quarter of the population, though the number of Koreans, Vietnamese, Jamaicans, Greeks, and Russians was also growing.

The New York Yankees promptly won the 2009 World Series.

The De Blasio Administration pushed through universal Pre-K, which has enrolled 70,000 students since its inception in the Fall of 2014.
