Across our 60+ locations, we provide programs in a variety of service areas, including workforce development, children, youth, families, seniors and homeless prevention. The Jerome Avenue Men's Shelter (JAMS) provides beds to 200 men with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness. The site offers an array of social services, such as housing case management (including assistance with benefits and gathering vital documents), programming to address mental health and substance abuse issues, meals, and activities. The site has an on-site clinic that can provide primary care and psychiatric services. Residents can remain at the shelter until placed into permanent housing, ideally within nine months of receiving services. RESPONSIBILITIES Assist clients with concrete needs (e.g., hygiene products, linens, MetroCards, laundry detergent, dorm access, etc.). Oversee weekly under bed cleanouts and linen exchanges. Manage bed pack-ups, including completing pack-up inventory. Manage use of bed bug oven. Monitor client laundry room as necessary. Manage client property storage and dispose of client property in accordance with policy. Manage inventory of hygiene products, linens, and other client supplies. Ensure that supplies remain adequately stocked in appropriate locations (e.g., office supplies, cups for water, etc.). Assist in bed count and census management (for night shift). Complete new client intakes, including conducting immediate needs assessment, reviewing and signing appropriate client forms, and entering data in appropriate databases. Pick up and deliver packages and complete other errands as assigned. Escort clients to appointments or other locations as necessary either by using agency vehicle or public transportation. Provide general clerical support, including filing, faxing, typing, photocopying and sorting mail. Enter client and program data into computer databases and other tracking systems. Assist in the preparation of mailings. Answer telephones, relay messages and greet clients and other visitors Perform additional duties as assigned. Perform additional duties assigned. QUALIFICATIONS High school diploma or equivalent. One to two years relevant experience preferred. Proficiency in modern business communications including personal computers, electronic mail, voicemail, facsimile and copier equipment. Proficiency in basic filing principles. Driver's License from the state of residence is preferred, but required for 8 am - 4 pm shift. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS Ability to use a computer for prolonged periods. Ability to occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Ability to stand, walk, or sit for long periods of time. Ability to climb five flights of stairs, if required to conduct home visits and/or fieldwork. Ability to bend and retrieve objects and/or documents. Ability to travel in the boroughs of New York City and its adjacent counties via public transportation. Ability to travel for a minimum of 1 mile within a reasonable amount of time and in all types of weather, including inclement weather, if required to conduct home visits and/or field work. The ideal candidate is passionate about teamwork, has some experience in office and administrative support, and has an interest in working with the populations we serve. All interested applicants must complete the application on our agency website at ******************* RESPONSIBILITIES Provide direct services to clients, including intake, engagement, assessment, referral, service plan development, advocacy, counseling, exit summaries and follow-up. Conduct home visits and other field work, as required. Document all interactions with, or on behalf of, clients. Facilitate tenant meetings, activities and events. Qualifications and Educational Requirements High school diploma required Fluency in Spanish is required Experience working with older adults preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities Sensitivity to the strengths, challenges, and needs of older adults Strong work ethic and reliability Ability to multi-task and work effectively in a fast-paced environment Strong written communication skills, with the ability to write concise and clear case notes Ability to communicate effectively with clients who may have physical disabilities, sensory impairments (hearing, vision), and/or mental health challenges Ability to work collaboratively as a team member while also carrying out independent responsibilities Computer Skills Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, Outlook) Ability to use or learn electronic client databases Ability to use or willingness to learn DFTA's PeerPlace/or new system (training provided) Physical Requirements Ability to circulate in the lunchroom for approximately one hour per day and greet clients in hallways, escorting them to offices as needed Preferred: ability to walk and stand frequently throughout the day Ability to travel locally to conduct home visits, accompany participants to appointments, and follow up post-hospitalization as required Work Environment Senior center environment located within NYCHA housing facilities Shared office space on the second floor, accessible by elevator Occasional fieldwork and home visits to support client needs We are committed to building an inclusive workplace community grounded in respect for differences.
