Brook Mays founded Brook Mays Music by purchasing the Will A. Watkin Music Company in August 1901.
In the 1940’s Brook Mays Music began to expand its merchandise lines to include organs, print music, and band and orchestra instruments.
The first store opened on December 8, 1945, in an 8’ X 16’ building at 1309 Main Street, Houston, Texas as a band and accessories store.
In the 1950’s the Everitt family became involved in Brook Mays Music.
In 1950, the company moved to a 50’ X 100’ building, added a piano department, a full sheet music department, and a repair service center.
In 1955 the company moved to the current downtown location at 1211 Caroline Street and added a full guitar and drum department.
When Bill Everitt, Jr. entered the business in 1968, the Everitt’s bought out the partner and took over the entire company.
Further expansion happened in 1969 when Brockstein Music and Carter Music were purchased, bringing the company to seven stores.
Everitt joined the three-store chain in 1969, while he was still a student at Southern Methodist University.
The 1970’s proved to be a period of consolidation for H&H Music and a transition period for the retail music products companies in Houston as old businesses went out and new businesses were started.
In December of 1982, H&H Music was purchased by the owners of Brook Mays Music of Dallas.
He expanded into Houston in 1982 by acquiring the five-store H&H Music chain.
Splitting with his father, who kept four stores in the Fort Worth area, Everitt recruited Wellspring Capital to invest $30 million in 2000 for a controlling interest in Brook Mays.
In 2003, the Company took an openly public stand against inexpensive and low quality instruments being made in China and sold in big box stores.
A new company was formed in October 2006 by William (Bill) S. Everitt (prior CEO of the old Company). He purchased the names of the old company and has started over again as a school music specialty company.
Throughout 2015 the UNT OHP will celebrate its 50th anniversary by showcasing interviews from its collection and by sponsoring special events.
