Gardener - Trees Department: Horticulture

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is seeking a full-time gardener to perform tree work and related duties under guidance of the director of Horticulture, manager of Horticulture, and general supervision of the foreperson of grounds.
*The Gardener title is a general gardener position and while the current staffing plan requires tree work, this may change and the incumbent may be reassigned to a different area of the Garden, as the Garden deems appropriate.
Primary Responsibilities:
Deal with all aspects of horticulture, such as planting, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, mulching and caring for trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, and other flora, both on the grounds and in the conservatory.
Inspect and identify pest problems and treat such problems using techniques of Integrated Pest Management.
Select, propagate, design, and purchase plants with appropriate horticulture procedures.
Operate and maintain hand- and power-gardening tools and small equipment. Make necessary operating adjustments to same and report need for repair and replacement.
Operate large power-gardening equipment, such as a tractor, mower, rototiller, roller, sprayer, etc., as needed.
Supervise assigned subordinate employees, including temporary workers and volunteers, instructing them in gardening techniques and in the proper use and care of materials and equipment.
Keep records, including timely submission of plant inventory-control reports and label requests; keep a logbook of plant collections and job-related activities and submit quarterly reports to director of Horticulture.
As directed, various tasks perform in connection with general grounds and conservatory care and Brooklyn Botanic Garden events.
Adhere to the policies of the Horticulture department and Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Perform tasks as needed for show design and setups.
Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Qualifications:
Two (2) years of college and/or associate degree related to horticulture; or three (3) years of full-time paid experience in maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and lawns, and operation and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience
ISA Certified arborist status
TRAQ certification preferred
Pesticide technician or applicator certification preferred (or must be able to obtain Pesticide Apprentice Certification)
Must know how to safely use a chainsaw
Ability to identify and discern between various tree conditions, perform tree inspections using advanced diagnostics, climb, prune, install support systems, remove trees, and complete other work as assigned
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Ability to use computer-based tree management systems for scheduling, timekeeping, and inspections; accurately maintain tree care database records
Must be able to respond to emergency situations including, but not limited to, storms and snow events
May be called upon to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
Must be able to pass a written and/or practical test
Ability to lift 50 pounds
Compensation and Benefits:
Salary Range - $64,852 - $74,580

The Learning-to-Work Program at Mott Haven Community High School is administered by East Side House, Inc., which complements the academic component by providing additional academic help, career and education exploration, work readiness, skills development, and internships.
Under the supervision of the Program Director, the Student Advisor will follow the Primary Person Model where they will be the first point of contact for students, parents and staff members. It is expected that the Student Advisor provides support over a wide variety of areas, including college and career readiness, college application support, academic progress monitoring, day-to-day student engagement and support, socio-emotional issues, career development, and personal development. Community Schools are a strategy to organize resources and share leadership to integrate social services into the fabric of the schools. Community Schools are equipped to better serve the needs of families so that students come to school ready and able to learn.
Community Schools offer a holistic approach toward improving academic performance driven by strong, collaborative partnerships among principals, parents, teachers and CBOs. In Community Schools, parents are real and active partners in their children's education, the school climate is joyful and positive, and expanded learning opportunities are standard.
An integral part of this approach is the integration and alignment of school- and community-based services throughout an expanded learning day (such as health, mental health, counseling and academic enrichment). Critical to ensuring this alignment and coordination is a full-time staff person in the school building - the Community School Director (CSD). Serve as an advisor and think partner to the principal, providing leadership for coordinating the work of different partners within the school, and aligning the work of partners with the school faculty.
Work with school leadership to maintain a focus on results and track progress
Organize and oversee assets and needs assessments and seek input from teachers, school staff, parents and students to determine ongoing needs of students and families.
Serve as a point person for agencies and programs interested in partnering with the school and help to broker new partnerships that are aligned with school goals and needs.

Determining amount and type of food and supplies required for all sites, using menus and food production systems.

Refrigerator/freezer temperatures must be taken daily and adjustments made as needed. Responsible for doing an inventory of foods/supplies monthly, provide food orders on a biweekly basis ensuring to include substitution foods for special dietary needs/restrictions.
Use of Simple Servings for menu preparation, menu submissions and recipes.
Reports necessary equipment repair and maintenance to supervisor.
Plans for food production to coordinate with meal serving hours so that quality, temperature and appearance of food are preserved.
Maintains daily production records and submits production records to supervisor monthly.

The Education Greenhouse space consists of three sections representing and containing desert, temperate, and tropical plant collections. Although it is an indoor collection, during the year the space may be quite chilly or hot.

Provide supportive counseling to participants in crisis; make mental health referrals when necessary.
Make referrals to APS when there is elder abuse, neglect or danger.
Make referrals to appropriate community partners when participant is in need including, home health care, meals on wheels, assisted living facilities and nursing homes.
Assist with crisis or conflict that may occur at the center; complete incident reports.

The cook is responsible for preparing breakfast, lunch and snack, complying with all applicable sanitation, health and personal hygiene standards and following established food production programs and procedures.

Determines amount and type of food and supplies required using menus and food production systems.

Alfred Smith YABC is a small, academically rigorous, full-time New York City Department of Education program designed to re-engage high school students who are over-age and under-credited or have dropped out of high school. East Side House, Inc. is directly responsible for the administration of the Mott Haven Community High School's Learning-to-Work Program, which enhances the academic component by offering additional academic support, career and education exploration, work preparation, skills development, and internships.
Under the direction of the Program Director the Student Advisor will provide support over a wide variety of areas including college and career readiness, academic progress monitoring, day-to-day student issues, social-emotional and personal development. Student Advisors will follow the Primary Person Model where they will be the first point of contact for students, parents and staff members. Primary Functions

Expected Work Schedule
This is a full-time position. Monday Thursday, 1:00PM- 9:00PM Friday, 9:00AM- 5:00PM
Some evenings, weekends, and remote work required. Maintain flexible hours and workdays, some overnight trips required. Workdays/hours subject to change based on ESHs needs and pending school schedule.
Supervisory Responsibility
The role has no supervisory responsibilities.
Work Environment
Business casual. This job operates in a school office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets and fax machines.
Travel
Minimal travel is expected for this position (on a need basis). Most travel will be conducted for the purpose of chaperoning trips, attending ESH events, and conducting home visits.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or listen. This is generally a sedentary role; however, some filing and site visits are required. Position Description:
Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) seeks to fill a seasonal Membership customer care representative position. This position reports to the Membership Manager and is a key part of a team that serves over 23,000 member households. The Membership customer care representative will provide both front-facing customer service to members and administrative support to the staff, splitting time between the desk in the Visitor's Center and the Development office. In this high-volume membership office, the customer care representative must possess excellent customer service and organizational skills and the ability to work independently.
Responsibilities:
Assist members while visiting the Garden. This includes, but not limited to:
Assisting with onsite sales
Answering membership related questions
Organizing membership packet pick-up
Respond to member emails and prioritize urgent requests, including ticketing questions.
Answer member calls on membership hotline.
Enter data in Raiser's Edge, including updating members' contact information and marking if members need new membership cards or package.
Process memberships on Raiser's Edge
Act as liaison between Membership department and Visitor Services.
Other administrative tasks as needed.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden's Children's Education programs are renowned for teaching hands-on gardening and plant science to young people. Children's Garden education fellows spend the growing season (spring-summer-fall) in BBG's Children's Garden, teaching children to grow, harvest, and cook their own food, care for the environment, and explore the natural world.
Early childhood fellows teach age-appropriate gardening lessons to 11 young children with the help of two to three teen apprentices from our Garden Apprentice Program during the summer season. During spring and fall, early childhood fellows co-teach hands-on gardening lessons to a group of 10 young children (2-4 years old) and their adult partners. Prior to each teaching season, fellows participate in a comprehensive paid training program, covering seasonal content, pedagogy, and horticultural skills.
Brooklyn Botanic Garden is looking to hire two early childhood fellows to teach in our Children's Garden. This is a seasonal position from March 17 to October 31, 2026. The commitment is 18 hours per week in the spring and fall, and 22-30 hours per week in the summer. During spring and fall, the schedule is Wednesday-Saturday. During summer, the schedule is Tuesday-Friday.

Ensure that assigned garden plots are maintained according to weekly task lists (including planting, weeding, mulching, watering, and more).
Lead activity stations for Family Gardening Hours, a program for children of all ages and adult caregivers.
Assist in teaching other education programs as needed.
Qualifications:
Formal or nonformal early-childhood or elementary education experience, ideally in a classroom or outdoor setting
Comfort with imaginative play, singing songs, cooking, and exploring nature with young children
Passion for plants and gardening
Horticulture experience preferred but not required
Ability to perform physical labor and work outdoors in various weather conditions
Outgoing and welcoming personality; responsible, punctual, and professional
Experience and comfort working with a diverse group of youth and staff
Willingness to incorporate constructive feedback into lesson planning, garden maintenance, and teaching practice

Brooklyn Botanic Garden (BBG) is seeking a full-time gardener to perform tree work and related duties under guidance of the director of Horticulture, manager of Horticulture, and general supervision of the foreperson of grounds. *The Gardener title is a general gardener position and while the current staffing plan requires tree work, this may change and the incumbent may be reassigned to a different area of the Garden, as the Garden deems appropriate.
Primary Responsibilities:
Deal with all aspects of horticulture, such as planting, cultivating, watering, fertilizing, pruning, weeding, mulching and caring for trees, flowers, shrubs, lawns, and other flora, both on the grounds and in the conservatory.
Inspect and identify pest problems and treat such problems using techniques of Integrated Pest Management.
Select, propagate, design, and purchase plants with appropriate horticulture procedures.
Operate and maintain hand- and power-gardening tools and small equipment. Make necessary operating adjustments to same and report need for repair and replacement.
Operate large power-gardening equipment, such as a tractor, mower, rototiller, roller, sprayer, etc., as needed.
Supervise assigned subordinate employees, including temporary workers and volunteers, instructing them in gardening techniques and in the proper use and care of materials and equipment.
Keep records, including timely submission of plant inventory-control reports and label requests; keep a logbook of plant collections and job-related activities and submit quarterly reports to director of Horticulture.
As directed, various tasks perform in connection with general grounds and conservatory care and Brooklyn Botanic Garden events.
Adhere to the policies of the Horticulture department and Brooklyn Botanic Garden.
Perform tasks as needed for show design and setups.
Perform other related duties or special projects as directed.
Qualifications:
Two (2) years of college and/or associate degree related to horticulture; or three (3) years of full-time paid experience in maintenance of trees, shrubs, herbaceous plants and lawns, and operation and maintenance of gardening tools and equipment; or a satisfactory equivalent combination of education and experience
ISA Certified arborist status
TRAQ certification preferred
Pesticide technician or applicator certification preferred (or must be able to obtain Pesticide Apprentice Certification)
Must know how to safely use a chainsaw
Ability to identify and discern between various tree conditions, perform tree inspections using advanced diagnostics, climb, prune, install support systems, remove trees, and complete other work as assigned
Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license
Ability to use computer-based tree management systems for scheduling, timekeeping, and inspections; accurately maintain tree care database records
Must be able to respond to emergency situations including, but not limited to, storms and snow events
May be called upon to work shifts including nights, Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays
Must be able to pass a written and/or practical test
Ability to lift 50 pounds

Salary Range - $64,852 - $74,580 Brooklyn Botanic Garden considers several factors when determining the appropriate salary to offer a candidate within the listed salary range.
