Broward College company history timeline

1960

On September 6, 1960, the Junior College of Broward County opened its doors to its first class - 701 students.

1963

Until the college's first permanent buildings were completed in 1963, students attended classes in the former Naval Air Station Junior High buildings on the western edge of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport.

1965

After helping JCBC through its formative years and onto firm footing, Rushing in 1965 announced he was returning to his home state of Texas to become founding president of Tarrant County Community College in Fort Worth.

1970

In 1970, the college was renamed again to Broward Community College.

1974

The Tigertail Lake Recreational Center first started in 1974 and was operated from a car until the building was complete.

1979

The hall opened with a dedication gala in 1979; Governor Bob Graham was the guest of honor for the ceremony.

1980

John Payne Hall, Handleman Hall, Ferris Center, Joe B. Rushing Hall and the Meyer Hall were all named and dedicated for Broward College's 20th Anniversary in 1980.

1995

In 1995 Broward College received their first donation from Edward Seese.

1997

The Seese donation was given to Broward College to be given as scholarships to students known as the "C Scholarships". The first Broward College website debuted in 1997.

1998

In 1998 the college held its first outdoor graduation ceremony on the Central Campus Library lawn.

1999

In 1999 another milestone for Broward College was reached, the first online computer registration for students was available.

2004

Doctor Larry Calderon succeeded Holcombe upon his retirement in 2004.

2009

Broward's first class of baccalaureate students began attending classes in January 2009 on the Judson A. Samuels South Campus.

2017

In December 2017, Armstrong announced that he would transition from the role of president.

2018

Following a nationwide search Gregory Adam Haile, Esq. who served as General Counsel for the college was named president in May 2018.
