Broward Sheriff's Office company history timeline

1915

Founded in 1915, Broward County has grown from 4,700 residents to become the second most populous county in Florida (over 1.8 million residents) and is the seventh largest in size at 1,209 square miles.

1925

Paul C. Bryan replaced Sheriff Turner in 1925 but served only two years when Turner was re-elected into office for another four-year term.

1931

In 1931, Walter R. Clark was the next elected sheriff of Broward County.

1939

In 1939, Eddie Lee, a former semi-professional catcher with the Fort Lauderdale Tarpons and chief district dispatcher with the Florida Power and Light Company served the two-year term of office.

1950

1954

In 1954, BSO received its first radio system, a significant advancement to the agency's communications.

1956

In September 1956, Sheriff Hall opened a county holding facility which occupied part of the fifth, sixth and seventh floors in the county courthouse.

1957

J. A. "Quill" Lloyd took the helm from Amos Hall in January 1957.

1958

Sheriff Cochran's law enforcement career began in 1958 when he joined the Fort Lauderdale Police Department as a patrolman.

1966

Michell was indicted by a Florida grand jury in 1966 which charged him "knowingly, willfully or corruptly" allowing gambling in Broward.

1967

Michell, a former Philadelphia police captain, was indicted in 1967 by a Florida grand jury on charges of misfeasance, the performance of a lawful action in an illegal or improper manner, and malfeasance, wrongdoing or misconduct by a public official while in office.

1968

In 1968, popular county politician Edward J. Stack was elected sheriff.

1970

During the 1970's there were only a few full-time paid fire departments including; Pompano Beach, Fort Lauderdale, Hollywood, Sunrise, Margate and others.

1973

Started as a pilot project in 1973, Broward County Emergency Medical Services began providing Advanced Life Support paramedic service from a station located in the parking lot of Plantation General Hospital.

1975

The countywide 911 emergency system was launched in 1975.

1982

In 1982, Sheriff Butterworth was appointed director of the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, causing him to leave BSO and relocate to Tallahassee.

1985

In 1985, the rapid growth of western Broward prompted the creation of a separate district office to provide law enforcement services in a quick and efficient manner.

1989

In 1989, the FOX television series COPS debuted with the first season focused on BSO.

1993

On January 5, 1993, Ron Cochran was sworn in as sheriff by Florida attorney general and former sheriff, Robert Butterworth.

1998

Florida Governor Lawton Chiles called upon State Senator Ken Jenne to serve as sheriff, and he took the oath of office on January 20, 1998.

2003

In 2003, the Broward Sheriff's Office, through a contract with the Broward County Commission, assumed control of Broward County Fire Rescue, Port Everglades Fire Rescue and Ft.

2007

In 2007, one Broward sheriff even was sent off to prison.

2012

In a 2012 interview with the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Lamberti figured he lost because he was a Republican in a heavily Democratic county.

2013

On January 8, 2013, Sheriff Scott Israel was sworn into office as the 16th sheriff of Broward County.
