Do you like working with data and activities that include practical, hands-on problems and solutions? If yes, consider working as a Building Inspector I for Nevada County Building Department where you have the potential of being promoted quickly to a higher level (Building Inspector II). This position requires you to inspect structures using engineering skills to determine structural soundness and compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations. Other vital duties include:

* Perform field inspections of new building construction, alterations, additions, and mobile home permits for compliance with applicable codes, regulations, and approved plans
* Provide information to building professionals and the general public regarding building requirements; interpret and explain codes
* Issue permits and research problems
* Prepare correction letters and inspection reports
* Advise contractors, architects and engineers regarding structural safety requirements or building design
* Coordinate inspection activities with other departments and agencies
* Prepare and maintain a variety of records, correspondence and reports related to inspection activities

A building inspector is an integral part of Nevada County whose mission is to provide excellent service to the community in a timely, efficient, and effective manner while maintaining compliance with minimum housing, building and safety laws! This position is crafted for individuals who either have three years of journey-level experience in one of the building trades (building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical) or have completed a Building Inspection Technology Program from a vocational school or an accredited college or university. Furthermore, at time of hire, one ICC (International Code Council) certificate in either residential or commercial building, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, or plans checking is needed.

THE ROLE

PEG is searching for motivated individuals who demonstrate a commitment and enthusiasm for Energy Efficiency, Energy Sustainability, and Building Energy Performance of New Residential Construction. This position requires you to become a certified HERS Rater. Learn more at www.resnet.us.

In this position, new employees will be provided paid on the job training that will prepare them to perform Home Energy Audits in accordance with RESNET Guidelines. This will include visual inspections of materials, data collection and visual observation of energy efficient features, and the utilization of equipment to test system performance.

Job Location:

The geographical area assigned to this position includes a 50-mile radius with Sparta, NJ at its center.

Essential Functions:

• Perform Home Energy Audits in accordance with New Construction RESNET/Energy Star Guidelines including but not limited to:
  • Visual Observation of energy efficient features such as the quality of the installation of duct work, insulation, framing, air sealing, ventilation, etc.
  • Perform Blower Door and Duct Leakage Testing utilizing start of art equipment and cutting-edge technology to test building’s performance to meet industry’s standards
• Actively develop relationships with builders and code officials through effective and professional communication

Education and/or Experience

• High School Diploma or General Education Degree or Vocational Certificate in the Skilled Trades Industry is required
• HERS Rater, Energy Star, Green Building, ACCA 310 HVAC Grading, IECC, HVAC EPA, BPI, and LEED Certifications are a plus!
• 2 years of work experience in HVAC, home remodeling, or construction is helpful.

Physical Demands

• Must be physically able to fulfill job functions, including lifting up to 50 lbs, carrying equipment, climbing ladders, work in confined spaces, and using small tools and testing equipment
• Must enjoy working in the great outdoors

Additional Requirements

• Must have a valid driver’s license, satisfactory driving record, dependable transportation, and the ability to travel daily to job sites.
• Must be dependable, self-directed, and able to complete projects with limited supervision

What will you do in this role?

This position is responsible for inspecting commercial and residential structures to ensure compliance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and other related codes.

* Perform responsible Building inspections of Residential, Commercial, or Industrial construction projects for compliance with applicable National, State and Local Code requirements.
* Perform project research and data entry for documenting inspection results in the County's computer-based program.
* Assist customers in navigating the different processes required for inspecting construction related projects.

Preferences

* High School Diploma or GED
* 3-5 years of Building Construction experience
* Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
* Working knowledge of the Virginia Construction Code and the ability to interpret applicable codes
* Ability to read and interpret construction plans and documents
* Analyze and evaluate as-built construction systems and assemblies
* Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and blueprints.
* Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
* Ability to handle a fast-paced inspection environment and QUICKLY adapt to changes when conducting inspections

Hiring Salary Range:

$23.67-$29.59 per hour ($46,156.50-$57,700.50 annually)

Schedule Requirements

This position works Monday-Friday, 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM (37.5 hours per week)

Special Requirements

* Valid Driver's License
* Ability to pass a DMV Records Check
* Completion of a successful pre-employment physical
* Must become certified by the Virginia Department of Housing and Community Development as a Technical Assistant to the Building Official within 18 months of employment. This is in accordance with Part 1 of the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code, the Virginia Construction Code, 2018 Edition and effective 7/1/21: Section 105.2.2 Certification of Technical Assistants

MINIMUM EDUCATION,TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or G.E.D. and 2 years of related experience.

SPECIALREQUIREMENTS

Building Development:

Valid Driver's License; Must become certified as a Technical Assistant to the Building Official in accordance with the Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code and the Virginia Certification Standards.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Light Work: Exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or a negligible amount of force constantly to move objects. If the use of arm and/or leg controls requires exertion of forces greater than that for Sedentary Work and the worker sits most of the time, the job is rated for Light Work.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, electrical currents, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, workspace movement restrictions, inadequate lighting, intense noises, and travel.
