Bulk Molding Compounds, Inc. company history timeline

1934

On April 25, 1934, Frank G. Brotz, along with his five sons, formed the American Molded Products Company, a family partnership, in Chicago, Illinois.

1939

During the fall of 1939, the partnership decided to concentrate its efforts and limited capital exclusively for a time on the development of its custom molding department.

1946

In order for the firm to survive, the partnership decided in March 1946, to revive its manufacture of molding compounds, this time from phenol-formaldehyde resins.

E. H. Beach joined the firm in November 1946, and his energy and talents were focused on the manufacturing of phenolic molding material.

1971

1971 - 74 Moved to present location that was expanded to 99,000 square feet of floor space and adjacent land was acquired for future growth.

1977

1977-78 A selection of stamped parts made by IDI, including motor end laminations, motor parts, terminal boards, switch bases, among others.

1982

The expansion program was launched in late 1982 with the purchase of Genal, General Electric's line of phenolic molding compounds, located in Pittsfield, Massachusetts.

1987

1987-89 Acquired the Fabricating Division from Norplex/Oak.

1991

1991-99 John, Tom and Jay Merrell continue growing the ­­company through sales and acquisitions.

2000

A benchmark acquisition occurred in 2000 when Plenco purchased the Plaslok brand of phenolic molding compounds and PlasGlas polyester bulk molding compounds (BMC) from Plaslok Corp. based in Buffalo, New York.

2001

2001 - 05 The Merrell family endows The John and Verna Merrell Scholarship for Purdue University.

A technically advanced BMC production facility was constructed in 2001 for environmentally controlled bulk storage of high-volume resins along with automatic metering of resins and key ingredients used in producing BMCs.

2013

2013-14 Construction of the new corporate headquarters and the expansion of the SMC and BMC manufacturing facilities in Noblesville completed.

2015

2015 An oil painting of founder John K. Merrell was commissioned and hangs in the lobby of the corporate headquarters.
