What was the biggest food order you ever handled at one time from a customer, either via the ordering counter or at the drive-thru?

In drive through someone ordered 60 cheeseburgers. We made them park and come inside and wait and gave them a 10% discount

Isnt it aganist the rules to ask to hug people? A bk employee asked me this and I thot it was weird.

No there is nothing wrong with hugging people. An employee came up and randomly asked if they could give you a hug? That is odd, but they do hire all kinds of people.

How to get out of this spiral of minimum wage miserable jobs?

Apply for jobs. All jobs. If you want out you're gonna have to start from the bottom. If a place has minor experience required include a cover letter discussing you're willingness to learn. And don't just apply for jobs you think you'll love; apply for jobs that are better than fast food or offer better career progression. Getting out is easy. Just apply apply apply!

What is the most disgusting thing you've seen happen behind the counter that customers would never think happens?

I've seen food dropped on floors that was picked up and served. I've also seen just how filthy the fryers can be.

how many employees did you know of that used drugs? were you friends with any of them?

Most of them. Only work friends I didn't associate with them outside of work. I've never done drugs. Ive never even drank honestly. I'm just not into it. Our managers were cool with employees going out to the dumpster area and smoking weed on break because it helped them work faster and be more focused.

Any experiences with thieves, people who fill water cups with sodas, steal orders, etc?

Yes. Sometimes the person at the window would hand the food or set it there before they take the money and people would book it out of there as soon as they got it. filling your water cup with soda is the easiest thing to do and we only had one manager who cared enough to watch for that.

Any funny customer stories? Did you get close to the people you worked with? Did y'all have any inside Burger King jokes?

When I first started I got pretty close with some people but the turn-around rate is so incredibly high in fast food that in 1 month I had tenure in the kitchen and there were only a few people there longer than me and that got to the point you could look at someone and pretty accurately say how long they would last till they quit so eventually we had employees who I didn't even bother to learn the names of. Ive seen 2 car accidents in our drive through. Someone who ate inside when he left he left his tray on the table and took his fries and wrote, "*** U" on the tray with French fries. Some guy tried ordering beer in the drive through and when you talk on the drive through mic it actually broadcasts in the kitchen too so the people making food and can a headstart on making your food before they punch it in the register and when he started screaming and cussing at the girl on headsets it was so loud that all the customers eating inside could hear every word. I locked one of my friend on the roof of the building once and he tore his pants getting down and had to get new ones lol. We did many things that most places would have fired you immediately for.
June 29, 2017 on Reddit

How much free food do you get?

I got as much as I wanted. Really though employees only get a 50% discount but if you come in 2 hours early or stay 2 hours past your shift you get a free meal. I had tenure and was next in charge below management so they didn't really care what I did or got.

Do people ever come up to order and instead sing the "Hold the pickle, hold the lettuce, special orders don't upset us" song instead?

No one has ever sang their order at the one I worked at. We did have people try to order things like beer before though and we had a customer once who literally threw his messed up burger at the girl working register.

Used to work there as well. Great experience. Do you co workers do drugs while working? I noticed this happened quite often and it was extremely uncomfortable

A lot of people come in high lol (I happen to be one of those people) and I've only seen two people pop pills while on the job.

Is there some sort of celebration or award or anything for being there a year? What about 5, 10 etc

YUM! brand has an award for every 5 years of service. they send you a plaque and a catalog that is tiered out and you pick something in your tier. I'd rather them give a bonus to employees. I'm assuming other fast food chains do the same.

Gratz on the year! Have you ever or seen others add something extra to an sandwich when dealing with rude customers?

You don't even know what goes on at our Burger King... One time this kid we work with put a dead fly in someone's drink in the drive thru.

Worst customer story?

One time during the day (I wasn't working that day my friend was) someone came in with a person who filled out an application and threatened to rob the store with a pocket knife. The manager threatened to call the cops and IIRC they tried to get over the counter but then the manager (who was a fill in) called the cops and they ran out like little girls
July 22, 2015 on Reddit

Why do your peers think you deserve $15/hr when a good majority of you can't take simple orders or count correctly?

Well I may be the minority here but I believe the $15 wage increase would be good. I'm not saying this because I'm a kid who wants to get paid a lot. But in my restaurant (New Jersey area) there are a lot of adults who work there. And they have children to feed as well. Some people aren't lucky enough to have parents who went to college and were well off to get good jobs that pay decently. So I believe that the $15 would help these families so that their children could have better lives than they did. P.s I think I can count just fine:(

Do you yell at your employees on a consistent basis?

I have only tell a few times towards my employees (for good reason) usually because they are arguing or fighting withe each other

What do you think the solution is to get better employees? Almost every time I leave a fast food place I say to my self "I should have paid a little extra and went to a sit down place where I get good service."

It all depends on the management. If you don't have good management your employees will be under part. I once to hire people with little experience so I can mold them into someone who does not have any bad habits.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

Hmmm that's a tough one. I would have to say that the most rewarding part is helping people who need it (having the ability to give someone work)

Have you spit in someones food?

People ask me that all the time... Truth is I could never do that... That's pretty *** ip... Same goes for my employees

What POS system does your franchise owner choose for their sites? I work for a company that some BKs use for their registers, wonder if your site is one of them.

Sicom is the system :)

What was the craziest reason you had to let someone go?

One of my employees hit a customer one time.. Was crazy
February 5, 2015 on Reddit

Does your BK have a TV? Are there any corporate rules about what goes on the TV, or is there a particular reason so many BKs put on Fox News so that I can eat my Whopper while being unpleasantly serenaded with Conservative opinions, instead of something neutral that wouldn't make customers uncomfortable?

We do have t.v but yeah it's mostly just news and sports... We switch between cnn and Fox (we switch when a customer complains ) and we don't play cartoons or anything because customers complain about what they watch :/

I didn't see this question, what exactly IS an operations manager and how does it differ from a GM? Also, any advice on opening a franchise like this? I've always considered doing it but I've never known where to even start or how to choose a location, etc

A GM is a in store manager that takes care of the one store... A district overseas the GMs on a larger scale (more than one bk) and an operations manager (right hand man) takes care of the business aspect.. Advertising, big store changes, ect Open a franchise? I would advise you to have a lot of money because it is expensive.. And take your time highering your upper management

Hey, thanks for doing this AMA! What do you consider an efficient waiting time for your drive-thru customers? I know this is biased, but a majority of the times I attend a Burger King here in the Midwest, my wait time in the drive-thru is usually way longer than average. I know this is store by store basis, but the 3 or 4 that are in my area are always around 4-8 minute wait, even when I'm the only one in line. Just curious if you know what your averages were! Another question, do you know of any customers that have disgusting habits or food that they order? I once watched a person eat 20 McChickens at McDonald's, didn't know if you knew of any incidents that were similar in your store! Thanks again and good luck with your future in the company!

I got a txt from the closing manager an hour ago with all of the info... Our avg fir today was 3:11...our monthly avg is 2:48 and our goal is 2:30... 20 Mc chickens? Holy crap! No nothing like that but there is this guy who freaked out about not having enough tarter in his fish (after we put heavy tarter on it twice) so then I tipped the tarter container over and started scooping it out.... He now comes in every day for his fish with a mountain of tarter (he insisted on paying extra fir the excess of tarter) he eats every last drop too.. Gross

I might be getting a job at burger king. Is there any wag i would be able to get around shaving? I would trim and make sure its not scraggaly or whatever and i would wear a hairnet. What is the BK facial hair policy?

It all depends on what the franchise owner wants... Ours wants us clean shaven all the time but corporates says you can cover 1/3 of your face I do believe (don't quite me on that one) but like I said it still will be up to the franchise owner k(unless it's a corporate store ofc)

What was the worst customer ever to deal with?

One time this lady came in and slipped onto a wet floor sign (irony?) and broke a strap on her "200$" shoes tried suing us for injuries and her shoes but she got no where... Long story short, she kept calling the owner and corporate about it and i bought her shoes on eBay for $30 to shut her up lol (she didn't know how much I spent on them btw)

Is there a product that's noticeably more annoying/worse to make?

When I used to work on boards(making food) I always hated making salads because it took you away from the board to the "salad station" and just took too one when your making a lot of other food... It's always funny watching someone spin a shake that does not really know how and makes a huge mess. Lol Was always hard to make anything over a triple whopper because it can't fit in the wrapper/box lol Breakfast sacked making... It's easy but you have to be really fast "can i get 20 sec(sausage egg cheese) burritos" and you would have to run around like a chicken with your head cut off u less there was someone else there (usually at 8am is when I schedule someone else) because it's just the cook and assistant mngr there that early

How strict are you with your employees when it comes to getting food without paying or getting a little snack on the side such as cookies, nuggets, etc.?

If they steal it... It upsets me and I am supposed to fire them on the spot... Do i? Not really no but they do get in trouble... But if they ask me I am more than willing to give them some :) because I can "write it off" and everything is accounted for... But I can't be there all the time.. And I'm sure people eat nuggets and cookies here and there but hey what can Ya do?
February 4, 2015 on Reddit

What are some of the custom orders people get?

Alot of allergy related orders... Had a few 10 patty whoppers before... Alot of our customers have a "custom order"

I work at a bk and I have always been curious about the pay of a general manager, how much do you make every paycheck?

I get paid more then the avg GM (the avg GM would get 30-35k a year) and I'm sitting at 65k a year because how well my store is doing... The better than gp(gross profit) is for the owner the more money I get so I have to work hard and make sure my employees are not stealing or throwing away alot of food. And i keep an eye on how much money a day is going into labor. Edit: and I'm on my way to be an operations manager and will be around 100k a year(not trying to brag)

What sort of hours do you work? Any good "crazy customer" stories?

I am required to work a min am most of 50 hours a week...I usually work around 60+ I have so many crazy customer stories but I'll keep it short... I have a "regular" crazy customer that we call the "fish lady" because that's what she always buys...iI still remember her first order... she ordered a number 10 meal small and we were cooking everything fresh for her. ( was later on the night) foods done and I take it out to the table and walk back to the kitchen area and I heAR her screaming like a madman and she runs up to the counter and throws the tray with all of the food on it and said she didn't want her Bun toasted (sshe didn't btw) so I made her new items with a Non toasted bun...she comes in 2-4 times a week and I always regret when "tthe new girl" or people that don't no know take her order....eends up the same way.away.as the first time lol #2 It was st. Patrick's day (need I say more?) And a guy comes thru dt (oobviously plastered) and sits there waiting to order (ffor 5 min) and then decides on 4 turkey burgers comes to the window and spends another few minutes searching in his wallet for money.. pays and he is on his way..20 minutes go by and he comes running in with a gun and said he didn't want any onions (hhe never said anything bout onions btw) I tried to calm him down as an employee of mine called the cops...ccops got there and he dropped the gun but started to fight the cops and got maced and tazed...need less to say I shut down for the night lol

When is the best time to order from drive thru, to insure the food is freshest? Busy time or slow time?

Well at my store it would be both because when we are busy we are always cooking more food and when we slow down we cook it fresh just so the customer always gets nice hot food :) (nnot all stores will do this because of the "drive times" they want to meet but I like hot food so they get hot fresh food all the time)

When you started from the bottom did you ever think you'd stick around long enough to be an Operations Manager? I'm sure turnover is pretty high in the industry as the job is considered less than ideal.

To be honest I just wanted a part time job to help with school. I never thought I would be here today (OMG you work at fast food) but it was well worth it in the end..it pays well
February 4, 2015 on Reddit

Have you ever had to fire someone that you didn't think should be fired?

Yes I have actually...the owners didn't really like the man and told me to fire him..I didn't want to but I do what I'm told...there was also one time that someone living in some apartments behind burger King complaind about one of my "regular" customers smoking near the trash cans... needless to say those people called the big guys and told me to 86 him from the store

What are your ordering and receiving procedures? Do you have any leeway in customizing menu items that aren't on the menu as "manager's specials?" If you "had it your way" what would be the first thing you changed in your store? What is the biggest trump card Burger King has over its competitors in your opinion?

I order all of the stores needs from the supplier from an online order form. I do have somewhat of a leeway...i can change the menu items to other items we offer, but nothing "ccustom" I can also change digital menu boards in the store. Well it is my store so I can have it my way :p but to be honest I got the newest store and the only thing I can think of is changing how we have to train people. Biggest trump card? Come into bk and order anything realistic and we will make it...aa lot of people tell me they never thought of ordering custom things because it's "nnot on the menu"
February 4, 2015 on Reddit

How much hair is found in food? (this is a serious question as it has happened to me multiple times).

Not very often actually but when it does we make the customer all new food :)

For meat, I only eat fish. Can I assume that my fish patties never touch other meat? I was told by a Carl's Jr employee that they fry chicken in the same pan. True for Burger King too?

We have a pan that we cook the fish in that's different than the others, and we even use different tongs to grab it with.
July 11, 2011 on Reddit

Other useful information: Any Burger King employee has the power to replace $10 worth of food without consulting a manager. If they won't do this for you, you were probably being an *** somehow. Just like with people serving tables, if you come in regularly and we notice you're polite, we will go out of our way to make your food better for you. There's one guy in particular at my store who comes in at the same time every day, and orders the same thing, so we drop his food fresh for him so it'll be just ready when he gets there. If a burger king employee is cleaning the dining room and is trying to make small talk with you, PLEASE be nice. We're required by our job to do this.

You're required to make small talk with the customers? That sucks.
July 11, 2011 on Reddit

Alright. Lets hear some stupid customer stories.

Let's see, there was one lady who complained we hadn't given her all of her chicken fries, she was raging and yelling about how she was going to call corporate on us and everything, with the manager not able to get a word in edgewise, and when she was finished the manager asked her to see the container. The manager then grabbed a tray, then pulled out each chicken fry and counted them right in front of her. They were all there. The lady went red in the face and ran out of the store without her food. For a second one, one customer walked in while one of my co-workers was mopping up the dining room and I was changing the trash bags in the cans. He orders his food, and then sits down in the one dirty place left in the dining room without a word. He eats his entire meal, then walks up to the counter and demands a refund on his meal because he didn't have a "satisfactory experience" due to the part of the dining room being dirty. My manager gives him what I'd now describe as a perfect Dave Silverman face, and said: "You obviously enjoyed your meal enough to eat the entire thing without a complaint, while stopping my employee from doing their job. If anything, you should pay me twice. Now get out."
July 11, 2011 on Reddit

Do you get an employee discount? Do you even eat Burger King? I don't...

We get a 25% discount on all meals we order for personal consumption, and sometimes our managers will give us small items for free. Also, if a sandwich has sat on the hold board for too long(10 minutes), then they'll usually give it to an employee for free. I do not personally eat Burger King, no. Not after working for them.

Hey OP, How long have you worked at Burger King? Have you worked for other fast food companies and how would you rate your work experience in comparison to other jobs you've had?

I've worked at Burger King off and on for more than a year now. I haven't worked at other fast food companies, and I would honestly rate working at Burger King lower than working in an IT helpdesk position.

How come Burger King only hires employees with extremely hairy arms? (guys and girls)

This is weird, because some of other employees and I were talking about this. About half of us have hairy arms, whereas the other half don't.

Ever get any crazy people coming in? Angry people, mothers, kids on field trips? Who's the most prudent, rude customer you can remember coming across? Do teenagers ever come in and do annoying things (ex. pushing over chairs, playing loudly in the play-place)? What signals the turning point for when it gets too out of hand, and how do you deal with it (assuming you've had to before)? How about stories of employees? My brother's in high school, and during the summer, he'll work the night shift at McDonald's. It's him and some girl, so due to the low traffic, they'll often end up getting bored, and having sex. Although this does sound like a product of pure fantasy, I can't help but wonder... have you heard of anything similar to that happening? Also, whenever a fast-food IAmA of some sort comes along, I can never help but to think of [this](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jnlZnjHraTg) particular situation...

The craziest thing I've ever seen happen while I was on shift was a couple of nuns walking in and ordering food (original chicken sandwich, for reference). Angry people come in all the time, and up to a certain point we'll tolerate it, but after that, we'll *** with you. Nobody I know has ever put bodily fluids into food, but there's other ways we can mess with it. As for stories of employees, I know of at least one employee who closed by himself, so he took his papers to work and rolled up em right there in the kitchen. Oh, and since the burger king I work at doesn't have a play-place, it's a lot less clean up/watching people. Everything can be seen from the front counter.

Have you considered unionizing your franchise to demand higher pay, greater worker control, benefits, consistent scheduling, grievance procedure, etc?

I'm fairly certain that if such a thing was even discussed at our store, the people talking about it would be fired instantly. edit: That's not to say I haven't considered it, to be fair.
