Our company got its start in 1898.
Founded in 1898, Burns & McDonnell is 100% employee-owned.
Established in 1957, Ref-Chem, a Burns & McDonnell company, is a heavy industrial construction and maintenance contractor.
That’s when a small band of Burns & McDonnell employees risked their personal finances to secure a loan to buy the firm from Armco Steel, which had purchased the company in 1971.
The firm continued on a successful path, building a client-first culture — working to make our clients successful — that would see us through the Great Depression and to a pivotal moment in 1985.
DeBoer began his career at Burns & McDonnell in 1991 as an electrical engineer, then as a project manager before taking on leadership roles.
Burns & McDonnell continues to be a powerhouse of a firm in Kansas City and beyond, with 2021 sales breaking its own record.
1 on Kansas City Business Journal’s List of top engineering firms ranked by local licensed engineers in 2021.
He said the firm reached 10,000 employees and is expected to grow by 13% in 2022.
