Burt's Bees company history timeline

1989

The pair got their big break in 1989, reported the Maine Times, when Louis Sager, buyer for New York's hip Zona boutique, ordered hundreds of teddy bear candles.

1991

They incorporated the company in 1991.

1993

Sales reached $3.5 million in 1993.

1994

1994: Burt's Bees moves to Raleigh area of North Carolina, a hotbed for cosmetics companies.

The partnership ended on a sour note after the business moved in 1994 to North Carolina, where it continued to expand before Shavitz was given the boot.

1998

Annual sales reached $8.2 million in 1998.

Collections of travel-sized samples introduced in mid-1998 became instant best sellers.

1999

Burt's introduced its first body lotions (Baby Bee Buttermilk, Carrot Nutritive, and Milk & Honey) in March 1999.

2000

Sales were more than $30 million in 2000.

2003

Employment was growing rapidly, numbering 180 workers in mid-2003.

2013

In the 2013 documentary "Burt's Buzz," filmmaker Jody Shapiro took a look at Shavitz's unusual life and the controversial backstory of Burt's Bees.
