REPORTS TO: School Bus Driver/Transportation Supervisor JOB GOAL/MAJOR FUNCTIONS: Assist in providing safe transportation for physically and mentally handicapped students; monitor, assist, and care for students. Demonstrate and understand, patient and receptive attitude toward special education students and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with adults and children. Assist with loading and unloading of students; utilize wheelchair lift, as necessary. Assist students in wheelchairs by loading and securing chairs before departure and assuring students are safely fastened into their seats; secure seatbelts, harnesses, tie downs and various adaptive and assistive devices; restrain physically active or aggressive students as needed. Monitor student behavior: provide assistance to meet the special needs of students; maintain order and discipline among students in accordance with District policies and procedures; assure student understanding of proper bus behavior and emergency procedures. Determine appropriate action in potential or real medical emergency situation according to established guidelines; administer first aid to passengers as needed. Communicate with teachers, staff, and parents concerning student needs, issues, and concerns. Clean up after students as needed.
