This position is in a union environment and the scheduling is subject to shift bid. New employees can expect to work the following schedule 2pm-10pm as well as overtime hours.
Qualifications:
Three years of professional automotive repair experience required. Must have your own tools in which to perform basic preventative maintenance. A valid driver’s license is required.

Who You Are:
As a Mechanic, you will perform preventative maintenance, diagnosis, service and repair of steering, suspension, brakes, engines, transmissions, differentials, electrical, wheelchair lifts, and air conditioning systems. Duties include, but are not limited to the following:

Talent Requirements:
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Combination of at least one (1) year experience for a C Mechanic, two (2) to three (3) years experience for a B Mechanic, and five (5) years of apprentice level verifiable training and experience in automotive or diesel mechanics for an A Mechanic, which may include high school mechanics courses and/or a regional occupational program.
- Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screen and random drug testing.

Under the direction of the Superintendent or General Foreman, a Bus Mechanic is responsible for repairing NJ TRANSIT buses for maintenance work.
Main Functions
Conducts a variety of testing, repair, installation and maintenance tasks on equipment including engines, brake systems, suspension, steering, electronics, electrical systems, HVAC, transmission, and painting equipment, as well as:
Inspects bearings, axles and related parts of brake system
Changes filters, oil, tires, worn parts and light bulbs as part of equipment inspection
Installs, replaces and reassembles components
Removes and replaces defective parts
Removes and replaces defective diesel engine parts
Repairs and maintains brake systems
Repairs equipment using hand tools, power tools, welding equipment and measuring instruments
Re-installs (repacks) bearings of brake system
Performs necessary adjustments to diesel engine (e.g., valve, timing, injector heights)
Determines whether or not equipment is able to stay in service
Education and Experience Requirements
Must be at least 21 years of age
Must have a high school diploma or GED, ASE certification a plus
Possess at least three (3) years of mechanical experience, preferably diesel
Possess a valid NJ License with the ability to obtain a CDL License with passenger endorsement OR possess a valid NY/PA CDL with passenger endorsement
Be able to pass the pre-employment physical and background checks
Have a good driving record with less than five (5) points
Normal working hours are 8:00 am-4:30 pm Monday to Friday (possible overtime)
