SCHEDULE:
Application is for our 2026 training classes.
Candidates must attend mandatory, paid, 9 (nine) week training period.
After training, variable shifts at any time of COTA service. Schedules are based on seniority, new operators must be willing to work any shift and day or night as required.
POSITION SUMMARY:
This position is accountable for operating a motor coach and transporting COTA customers in a safe, courteous and on-time manner. Performs other duties in alignment with the COTA Strategic Plan and in support of the organization's vision to Move Every Life Forward.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
Operates a motor vehicle safely and courteously, transporting customers over the various lines in COTA's system while complying with all state and local traffic laws.
Performs work in accordance with operating rules and regulations.
Speaks coherently and plainly, in order to call out stops and provide customers with any
necessary information.
May operate any motor vehicle of 30 feet or less on the Neighborhood Circulator Route Board when required.
Conduct Pre-Trip, bicycle rack and engine compartment inspections.
Assist Passengers utilizing wheelchairs to enter/exit bus and assist with wheelchair tie-downs per ADA guidelines.
May serve as a training instructor, training student busoperators in the safe operation of a motor coach over prescribed routes. Training instructors are chosen by driving ability and overall performance.
MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:
Must be at least 21 years old.
Must have a valid Ohio Driver's License and able to obtain/maintain a Commercial Driver's License.
Must have a high school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
Must have proof of U.S. citizenship or authorization to work in the U.S.
Must have one year's experience in a public contact job, preferably as a sales clerk, waiter waitress, customer service, etc.
Must have a steady work history.
Must have reliable transportation.
Must have a clean criminal record. Some convictions may result in disqualification.
Must satisfactorily complete all pre-employment testing.
Must meet the physical requirements outlined in the attached Job Task Analysis.
Must successfully pass the post-offer physical capability testing.
Must verify the past three (3) years' driving record and meet the following criteria:
No more than one moving violation within 1 year.
No more than 2 moving violations in last 3 years.
No revocation/suspension in last 3 years.
No OMVI or DUI in last 3 years.
No hit and skips in last 3 years.
No ACDA (Assured Clear Distance Accident) in last 3 years.
Must be able to work mandatory overtime to include, but not limited to, early mornings, evenings, and weekends.

Provides dependable service. Maintains established routes and time schedules. Suggests route modifications that improve efficiency. Transports only authorized passengers. Reports road hazards or other problems that may interfere with pupil transportation services.
Directs passenger loading/unloading. Operates the wheelchair lift. Checks seat belts. Secures wheelchairs and other assistance/mobility equipment before the bus starts. Reports unsafe or defective equipment.
Communicates bus rules to students. Keeps supervisors informed about persistent behavior problems.
Picks up and unloads students only at approved stops. Keeps route sheets up-to-date.
Responds to student requests for assistance. Avoids being intrusive. Solves concerns discreetly.
Provides assistance as needed when aware of passengers with medical/health considerations.
Follows district field trip procedures. Remains available to staff/students during trips as instructed.
Promotes the proper use, care, and security of school property. Reports discipline problems, vandalism, graffiti, equipment malfunctions, and other related concerns.
Attempts to identify and report vehicles that fail to comply with traffic regulations (e.g., failure to stop for flashing bus lights, passing in prohibited zones, etc.).

This person will work a minimum 6 hours per day and will be paid as per salary schedule. Persons applying for this position must have a CDL Class B License with School Bus endorsement along with a high school diploma or GED.
If you do not have a CDL Class B License with School Bus endorsement, we offer free training with a certified on board instructor. Training will provide the skills to obtain Class B CDL with school bus and passenger endorsement. The instructor will work around the trainee's schedule to accommodate training, including nights and weekends. The trainee will initially pay for the temporary permit, CDL testing, and CDL license. The initial cost is approximately $125.00. Upon successful completion of testing and is officially hired, those costs are reimbursed to the trainee. The only non-reimbursed cost to the trainee is the cost of the fingerprinting. The trainee has the potential to work as a substitute bus aide while being trained.

Shall remain free of any non-prescribed controlled substance, abuse of any prescribed controlled substance, possession, distribution and/or use of any illegal substance, and shall avoid any use of alcohol prior to driving a school bus and avoid any driving (including during non-work hours) while impaired by alcohol or any substance whatsoever throughout his/her employment in the District.
Refrains from the use of tobacco products within one half hour before boarding your route, when students are on the bus, or any other time on the bus while the bus is idle.
Is accessible to a telephone.
Submits to drug testing, when required.
Has on file in the bus for each student, the current route sheets.
Maintains a file on permission slips as authorized by the parent and approved by the principal for discharging students at stops other than the regular bus stop.
Complies with all procedures and regulations as established by the Board of Education.
Refrains from the use of obscene and/or foul language in bus barn and on bus.
Drivers are required to attend all meetings scheduled by the Transportation Coordinator.
All drivers will be required to check their bus garage mailbox and extra-trip postings on a daily basis.
Physical capability of safely and appropriately lifting and managing preschool and special needs children when necessary.
Ability to cope with stressful situations.
Each driver will be required to report any and all traffic violations and/or accidents for which he/she has been cited. Failure to do so will result in disciplinary action.
Refrains from becoming involved in matters that do not directly involve the driver.
Drivers are to come to a complete stop, including activating the stop lights, at each student pick-up point, unless the driver is sure the student will not be boarding the bus.
In the absence of the Transportation Coordinator, drivers are to accept the direction of either mechanic.
Work Duties/Environment may involve:
Regular use of hands, fingers and feet.
Swift movement, lifting, carrying, and moving work-related supplies and equipment.
Regularly lift and/or move up to 10 pounds; frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, and have the ability to evacuate passengers in an emergency situation.
Traveling to work assignments.
Working under time constraints and deadlines.
Regular involvement to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, see, read, speak, reach, stretch with hands and arms, stoop, crouch, and kneel.
Exposure to blood-borne pathogens, bodily fluids, blood, and communicable diseases.
Occasional interaction with aggressive, disruptive, and/or unruly individuals.
Riding on or driving buses and operating wheel chair lifts and securing car seats.
Working outside in inclement weather (occasionally).
Frequent exposure to loud noise levels; fumes or airborne particles; noxious odors; vibrations from driving a bus; and traffic.
The ability to physically perform and demonstrate emergency evacuation procedures.
