University business director job description

Under the general direction of The University Corporation (TUC) Executive Director, the Director of Business & Finance is a hands-on manager, a collaborative member of the management team providing sound financial and business advice to all business units within TUC as well as overseeing the accounting department.

The director contributes to the long-term planning and vision of the Corporation; monitors resources to meet both the long-term and short-term goals of the Corporation and actively takes part in improving the effectiveness of the Company's financial and administrative system and processes, including business process re-engineering.

The director consults with the Executive Director on significant financial and administrative matters, serves as liaison to the campus and the community on TUC's fiscal matters, and provides reports to TUC's Board of Directors regarding investments and financial activities. The director shall have a full understanding of all financial aspects of TUC, is active and proactive; and is resourceful in obtaining financial data to conduct detailed, strategic, or project-related analyses. The director prepares and develops complex financial spreadsheets to serve as the basis for business and financial reporting, strategy, and decision-making.

The director participates in the new business activities, developing strategic vision, strategic financial presentations, and project coordination as assigned. The director will assist and/or take a leadership position, with financial and pro forma analysis as well as the complex project coordination for a faculty & staff housing development at North Campus as well as the project coordination for the CSUN Hotel Project as assigned.

The director is responsible for TUC's cash & investment management as well as risk management. The director serves as the liaison with TUC's investment management consulting firm. Responsible for a full understanding of TUC's and NCDC's (North Campus- University Park Development Corporation) investment portfolios, including analyzing, preparing journal entries for General Ledger, reporting, and communicating all activities related to the portfolios to the Executive Director and the TUC Board of Directors. Working with the associate director of accounting, the director establishes a proper balance of operating cash & investment to maximize financial return while minimizing risk for TUC and NCDC.

The director is the lead person for risk management for TUC & NCDC. This requires a comprehensive understanding of the insurance underwriting of TUC & NCDC. The director will be the main point of contact for all insurance matters including working with AORMA and Alliant Insurance Group to underwrite insurance policies.

The director's responsibilities include monitoring and developing improvements for TUC's financial performance and contributing significantly to the financial integrity and growth of TUC. This includes leading the preparation of the annual budget and an update/forecast quarterly of the said budget based on the latest financial results.

The director, holding a senior financial position at TUC, directs and oversees financial matters including the effectiveness of accounting practices and procedures, the accuracy of the financial data, optimal resource assessment for meeting long-term and short-term goals, and ensuring the development and implementation of TUC accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and auditing standards.
