Optical Cable cable operator job description
Basic Function: Sets-up, runs, and monitors 36” up to 64”cabling equipment used for the manufacture of fiber optic cable.
Significant Responsibilities:
Performs specific job responsibilities:
- Reads the set-up sheet and utilizes the product code to determine product to be manufactured, machine adjustments and material requirements.
- Sets-up, runs and monitors the cabling lines for all standard products.
- Sets-up and runs respooling machine located in the cabling area to respool fillers.
- Observes, measures and inspects products at various stages of the production process to assure product is being produced per proper set-up sheet specifications.
- Correctly completes all documentation specific to this job function.
- Cleans equipment to prevent contamination as required.
- Recognizes various defects and problems that arise during production. Assists in solving problems or notifies supervisor if required.
- Conducts all activities in accordance with safety procedures and guidelines.

Minimum Qualifications Required:
Education & Experience: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); six months related experience and/or training preferred.
Essential Skills, Abilities & Knowledge: Mechanical aptitude with the ability to operate a machine in a production environment. Demonstrated ability to use tools and measuring devices properly. Ability to read and follow basic instructions and to understand and implement quality procedures. Math and handwriting skills required and the ability to correctly complete all documentation. Ability to work in a team environment with minimal supervision. Pays close attention to detail with the ability to complete assignments accurately and recognize and help resolve problems. Ability to operate a forklift.
Working Conditions: While performing this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and walk. Significant inspecting activities require manual dexterity using hands to finger, handle, or feel. The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 50lbs. This job requires sight for significant reading and computer use. Specific vision abilities required by this job include color vision. This work also requires an individual with hearing sufficient for communication with co-workers and alarm awareness. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Rate: $22.55/Hr
JOB OVERVIEW:
The Cabler 1 Operator is a medium skilled role that is responsible for safe and efficient operations of the machine, including loading/unloading reels, making hook splices, reading and interpreting production orders, selecting, identifying and installing tooling to meet production order specifications, adjusting lay length and binder tightness, loading binder, loading fillers and operating longitudinal taping head.
For example, some machines that would be ran are: Drum Twister (Heflin and SCUPP), Cabling and Shielding Machines, Bunchers or Twisters (VRP)
GENERAL REQUIREMENTS:
High school diploma or equivalent
Must read, write, and speak English; Bilingual in Spanish is a plus
Must be able to stand and lift heavy loads for long periods of time
PRIMARY JOB TASKS:
Must be able to work under supervision and maintain ongoing communication with the supervisor and peers through verbal instruction and reports.
Responsible for completing production orders to customer specifications or other requirements, thereby producing a quality product that can be delivered to the customer on time.
Operator is responsible for machine inspections.
Put scrap into the designated scrap bins.
Any other job duties as assigned.
CROSS TRAINING:
Will be required to cross-train on equipment within your identified workgroup at your facility
Once trained in more complex jobs, may be required to fill the position in the event of absence or vacancy
Will be required to rotate on a set frequency within your workgroup to maintain skill proficiency
QUALITY:
Use the company's ISO Quality System documentation to help guide all daily quality activities.
Responsible for maintaining general housekeeping, using shop floor correctly, and complying with legislative regulations.
Quality checks on the products the operator is running.
Quality inspection of products compared to production order.
Do not release products until all quality checks have been passed
Immediately report quality issues to the supervisor or quality manager
SAFETY:

Must be able to work in hot and cold environments normally found in a prefabricated building without climate-control.
