Cadwalader company history timeline

1803

Yale’s Sterling Memorial Library is acquiring historical records dating back to 1803 donated by Cadwalader, Wickersham and Taft, the oldest continuously-operating law firm in New York City.

1804

In 1804 he represented James Cheetham, the editor of the American Citizen, in Cheetham v.

1808

1816

In 1816 Strong helped found the Bank for Savings in the City of New York.

George Washington Strong established the first Bank for Savings for the City of New York in 1816.

1818

The firm became a partnership called Wells & Strong in 1818 when George Washington Strong joined Wells' practice.

1823

Wells' death in 1823 prompted Strong to bring in George Griffin as partner.

1835

In 1835 Strong replaced Griffin with Marshall S. Bidwell, his new partner and former member of the Canadian Parliament.

1838

Strong's son George Templeton Strong joined the law firm in 1838.

Griffin then left in 1838 and George Washington Strong partnered with Marshall Bidwell.

1844

George Washington Strong's son, George Templeton Strong, a lawyer and noted diarist, joined the firm in 1844.

1848

Since its formation in 1848, the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor had used the law firm's assistance.

In 1848, the firm established the New York Association for Improving the Condition of the Poor and advised The Association for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.

1849

Shipping, transportation and real estate matters handled on behalf of John Jacob Astor involved Strong in the legal work necessary to establish New York City’s first public library in 1849.

1855

The firm became Bidwell & Strong in 1855 after George Washington Strong's death.

In 1861, George T. Strong established the United States Sanitary Committee, a forerunner to the American Red Cross, which raised more than $5 million for Union soldiers in need of medical care.

1873

1873: Charles E. Strong begins a solo practice.

1878

By 1878, Charles Strong headed the firm, representing the leading business, social and cultural organizations of the day.

In 1878 Strong & Cadwalader with its six lawyers and four staff members was one of the nation's larger law firms.

1878: Strong & Cadwalader is formed.

In 1878, Strong partnered with John Lambert Cadwalader, who was assistant secretary of state during President Ulysses S. Grant's administration.

1889

Henry W. Taft, President Taft's brother, began working at Cadwalader in 1889.

1909

Joined by George Wickersham, who would become United States Attorney General in 1909, and Henry Taft, the law firm that would become Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft always believed that it would be dedicated to corporate law and civic duty.

1914

The firm became known as Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft in 1914.

1921

In 1921, George Wickersham became a founder and Chairman of the Board of the Council on Foreign Relations.

1929

As seen in the banner image (top of page), Wickersham posed with President Hoover and United States Attorney General William D. Mitchell on the White House lawn following the commission's first official meeting in 1929.

1932

Along with colleagues, noted jurists, attorneys and scholars, Wickersham established The Friends of the Law Library of Congress in 1932 to ensure the Law Library of Congress and its legal resources would remain in perpetuity.

Since 1932, The Friends have helped to grow what is now the largest law library in the world with 2.8 million volumes – the United States Law Library of Congress.

Cadwalader also defended Diamond Shamrock, a manufacturer of Agent Orange, when it was sued by over two million Vietnam veterans in a class-action lawsuit settled out of court in 1984.

1986

1988

1988: Los Angeles office opens.

1989

In 1989 the law firm gained a $2.5 billion settlement for 300,000 women who had sued for damages from the Dalkon Shield birth control device made by the A.H. Robins Company.

1994

Consequently, in 1994 a firm committee voted to end the unprofitable Palm Beach office and terminate some of its partners.

1996

A Florida judge in 1996 ruled in Beasley's favor, awarding him $2.5 million, based on the fact that Cadwalader's outdated partnership agreement lacked a means to expel a partner.

1996: Firm starts its branch office in Charlotte, North Carolina.

1997

1997: London office opens.

1998

By late August 1998, the office had grown to 30 attorneys and was relocating to a larger office in the city's Carillon Building.

1999

Starting January 1, 1999, the first-year associates had a salary and guaranteed bonus totaling $107,000.

The firm in early 1999 received considerable attention in the legal press when it gave its first-year associates a huge pay raise after lagging behind rival firms in years past.

2001

Following the September 11, 2001, terror attacks, Cadwalader assisted families of those killed, including immigrant families.

2010

Cadwalader expanded in China with a Hong Kong office in 2010.

2011

In 2011, it opened offices in Houston and Brussels.

2013

In 2013, James C. Woolery left JP Morgan Chase for Cadwalader, Wickersham & Taft.

2015

Black & Latino Association Immigration Clinic: Founded in 2015, the Clinic serves as a support network meant to increase attorney awareness, knowledge and engagement on pro bono immigration matters.

The next year, Woolery was selected to take over as the firm's new chairman starting in 2015.

2017

In 2017, The Friends began a national, online expansion with friends, partners, and sponsors to help ensure the Law Library's resources reach across and to the public.
