Caesars Entertainment company history timeline

1937

With roots stretching back all the way to 1937, when Bill Harrah opened a single bingo parlor in Reno, Nevada, Caesars Entertainment is one of the founding fathers within the world of American casino gaming.

1955

By 1955, Harrah decided that he would further expand his gaming operation, this time to the Southern shores of Lake Tahoe.

1966

Jay Sarno changed Las Vegas forever in August 1966 when he opened its first themed resort: Caesars Palace.

In 1966, Caesars Palace was founded.

1968

Frank Sinatra moved his act from the Sands to Caesars Palace in 1968.

1970

On September 6, 1970, Sinatra, who was earning $100,000 a week, got into an argument with casino manager Sanford Waterman, who pulled a gun.

1971

The Harrah’s corporate entity made its initial public offering in 1971, and just 2 short years later was a feature on the NYSE, the most popular stock exchange in the world.

1974

Sinatra wouldn't perform at the venue again until 1974.

1977

In 1977, Caesars Atlantic City was established.

1978

Shortly thereafter, tragedy struck as founder Bill Harrah unexpectedly died in the middle of 1978.

1989

In 1989 his son Robbie Knievel successfully completed the jump.

1997

1997 saw Harrah’s Entertainment launch its rewards program aimed at providing comps to all players regardless of where they were.

2004

In 2004, Harrah’s Entertainment shook up the poker industry by purchasing the Binion’s Horseshoe casino, and with it, the rights to the World Series of Poker brand.

2005

Caesars has changed hands several times; owners have included Hilton, ITT and Harrah's, which paid $9.4 billion in 2005.

2006

In 2006, CEO Gary Loveman turned down the opportunity to purchase a gaming license in Macau, which he later described as the biggest mistake in the company’s history.

2008

In 2008 Harrah’s Entertainment elected to change its corporate name to Caesars Entertainment Corporation, partly to capitalize on the brand affiliation associated with Caesars.

2009

In 2009 Caesars Interactive Entertainment was formed to help the company secure entry into the newly legalized online gaming industry springing up on a state-by-state basis.

2010

In 2010, the company fiddled with the idea of another IPO, but that idea came and went without taking shape.Instead, what did happen in 2010 is that Harrah’s Entertainment Inc. was renamed Caesars Entertainment Corp.

2012

In 2012, earlier dreams were realized as Caesars unveiled an IPO on the NASDAQ.

Between its rapidly accelerating entrance to the online gaming space and a long reign of dominance within the realm of brick-and-mortar casinos, Caesars Entertainment Corporation employed more than 70,000 people worldwide as of 2012.

2013

In 2013, Caesars decided to take its gaming online to cater to players in New Jersey and from all over the world while offering the same gaming experience without being physically in its Las Vegas or Atlantic City casinos.

2015

At the beginning of 2015, Caesars Entertainment filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

2018

In 2018, the online casino industry generated over $56 billion.

2020
