1925

In 1925, Calavo was instrumental in amending state agricultural codes to include standards for avocado handling and defects.

1926

In the spring of 1926, a representative of the Exchange traveled to Chicago to establish contacts with eastern brokers.

To stimulate consumer interest in avocados and promote the Calavo brand, an advertising campaign was initiated in the fall of 1926.

1927

According to a 1927 issue of the Calavo News, a house production of the cooperative, the avocado was introduced to California by travelers and sailors who had become familiar with the fruit in the tropics.

In 1927, when national advertising of fruit began, Calavo set a record for reader response with an ad in Vogue magazine.

1931

As early as 1931, the organization expanded into limes, followed by coconuts, mangos, kiwi fruit, and persimmons.

Diversification into broader product lines began in 1931 with limes and avocado oil, the Company's first processed product.

1935

In 1935, Robert Haas patented the Haas variety, a pebbly-skinned dark avocado.

1949

A Calavo label for papaya, Calavo Gold, was introduced in 1949.

1961

The California Avocado Advisory board was created in 1961, Calavo played a key role in its creation and development.

1964

In 1964, the company that had created the domestic market for avocados launched its buttery-flavored fruit overseas, beginning with Japan and later followed by additional expansion into Asia, Europe, and Canada.

1975

1975: A processing plant opens in Santa Paula.

1977

Calavo lobbied the state to engage in generic advertising for California avocados and, as a result, in 1977 the Board became the California Avocado Commission.

1987

The amount of land devoted to avocados in California peaked in 1987-88, totaling 76,307 acres.

1997

After the ban on Mexican avocados was lifted in 1997, Calavo opened a major packing plant in Mexico in order to process avocados destined for export to the United States market and around the world.

1998

In 1998, Calavo initiated a restructuring plan that consolidated processing and packing house operations, combined all sales activities into one department, and established a centralized marketing department to oversee strategic planning.

1998: A Mexican packing facility opens.

2001

Converting to For-Profit Status: 2001

2002

In 2002, Calavo Growers Inc. was designated the ticker symbol CVGW on the NASDAQ National Market System.

2003

In 2003, Calavo made its first strategic acquisition, Maui Fresh International, Inc., a multi-product distributor of specialty produce.

2005

Calavo gained a new home, too, moving its corporate headquarters to a historic Craftsman-period lodge on the Limoneira Ranch in Santa Paula, California, in 2005.

In 2005, Calavo made its first shipment of avocados to China, a country with a population of one billion plus, with surging personal incomes and a zest for all things Western.

Our purchase of Renaissance Food Group, LLC was the cornerstone of our 2011 achievements.
