About the Opportunity
This Security Officer position heavily emphasizes guest interaction and customer service. The Security Officer reports to a Security Shift Supervisor and provides security, safety, and guest services in public and non-public areas of the Academy. The position requires good observation, discretion, professional writing, speaking, and public relations skills. The physical ability to stand at indoor and outdoor posts, operate doors, and climb stairs is required. This position is based in San Francisco, California. Staff are currently expected to work from the Academy offices at least 2-3 times per week, which may fluctuate based on business needs. Please do not apply if you are not able to work onsite.
About the Security Department:
The California Academy of Sciences Security Department operates 24/7, 365 days a year. The Academy is located in Golden Gate Park, between the De Young Museum, Conservatory of Flowers, and Japanese Tea Gardens. The department highly emphasizes teamwork, communication, and a can-do attitude. The department provides security, safety, and guest services in public and non-public areas of the Academy, including our collection spaces off the public floor. We operate under regular museum hours and a primary function of the Academy's day to day operations, Thursday NightLife event for 21+ and all private events held at the Museum. We pride ourselves on executing the Academy's Platinum Guest Experience by seeking out guest contact, welcoming guests, proactively asking guests if they need assistance, and providing information and suggestions to guests.
Key Responsibilities
Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:
Provide for the safety and security of guests, staff, and visitors of the Academy through keen observation and proper reporting
Provide for the security and protection of Academy property, including animals, exhibits, facilities, and assets, through keen observation and reporting
Deliver the Academy's Platinum Guest Experience by seeking out guest contact, welcoming guests, proactively asking guests if they need assistance, and providing information and suggestions to guests
Interact with the public about the Academy's mission, programs, and exhibits
Interact with Academy employees, volunteers, contractors, and other business visitors regarding security and safety procedures
Respond with a first aid kit and perform basic first aid and CPR. Operate an AED and administer emergency oxygen
Enforce the Academy's access control policies
Provide building security, door security, the opening and closing of public and non-public areas, and conducting building rounds
Verify and record the identification and clearance of staff and visitors entering the Academy facility
Interview individuals and prepare incident reports using a computerized records system
Assist in the general upkeep and maintenance of the facility
Be willing and able to work shifts at varied times as needed
Be able to communicate clearly via a handheld radio device, including speaking and listening to routine and emergency communications
Respond to emergencies and assist in directing crowds in evacuations
Use a computer for incident reporting, visitor management, correspondence, and training

Experience and/or Education:
A qualified candidate will possess a combination of the following education and/or equivalent experience:
High school diploma or equivalent
Be able to obtain certifications in Basic First Aid, CPR, AED, and Emergency Oxygen
Be able to obtain and maintain a California Guard Card
Be able to obtain CIPS certification issued by the IFCPP
Customer service or guest-facing experience is a plus

Key Responsibilities:
Manages other managers and a team of biologists including hiring, training, daily supervision, scheduling, mentoring, and performance evaluation.

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:
Experience and/or Education:
Must have completed seven (7) years of paid full-time animal/plant husbandry or seven (7) years of paid full-time analytical chemistry/water quality or related position(s) in a public aquarium or zoological facility.
Minimum five (5) years of progressive work experience and leadership in managing projects, budgets, and/or professional staff.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Biology, Zoology, Marine or Aquatic Biology, Chemistry or a related field.

The Head Custodian is a working custodial position who performs daily custodial duties and coordinates and assists with supervising all aspects of daily and periodic cleaning in and around the museum, office, and storage areas. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
Execution:
Work independently to consistently deliver high-quality environmental and exhibition graphics aligned with the project vision and educational goals.
Design and produce all exhibition graphics-including labels, signage, and digital displays-in both English and Korean, applying best graphic design practices.
Collaborate with other graphic designers through concept development, final design, production, and installation, providing support and contributing to shared outcomes.

About the Opportunity
The California Academy of Sciences seeks a Postdoctoral Researcher in California Indigenous Science to join an innovative project within the Institute for Biodiversity Science and Sustainability (IBSS). Reporting to Dr. Shannon Tushingham, Associate Curator of Anthropology, the candidate will co-design and implement a braided science program that integrates Indigenous knowledge and Western methods. Drawing on archaeological, ethnographic, oral history, and specimen-based phenology data, they will investigate climate-driven ecological changes in collaboration with culture-bearers-documenting and applying traditional ecological knowledge-while partnering with Indigenous communities to co-develop research objectives, methods, and outreach that honor local protocols, and contributing to peer-reviewed publications, scientific and public presentations, and both in-person and online educational programs. This full-time, two-year appointment requires a PhD, a strong publication record or equivalent community-engagement achievements, demonstrated success in ethical, community-based research with Indigenous partners, experience securing external funding, mentorship of students, and public outreach leadership. Key Responsibilities:

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:

About the Opportunity
The Community Science Coordinator helps to plan, organize, and promote community science events and campaigns, acts as the point person for community science volunteers, and provides support in running and managing the community science programs based out of the Center for Biodiversity and Community Science. The Center for Biodiversity and Community Science works to bring people together to document biodiversity, to connect people to their local nature, to collect data critical to science and management, and to build partnerships to support community science and use of community-collected data.
We accomplish these goals through a variety of programs, including community bioblitzes, long-term intertidal monitoring, City Nature Challenge, and Snapshot Cal Coast, which scaffold collecting biodiversity observations using the iNaturalist platform with in-person community science field experiences.
The Academy is hiring two Community Science Coordinators who will work closely together and report to the Community Science Manager. There are two primary focus areas for our campaigns work, marine and terrestrial. One coordinator will lead efforts focused on marine community science campaigns, and the other will lead efforts focused on terrestrial community science campaigns. While each coordinator will have a primary focus area, both coordinators will collaboratively support the full suite of community science campaigns.
Both positions are full-time, temporary 2-year positions, with the possibility for extension.

Reporting to the Director of Information Technology, the Senior Security Analyst is responsible for configuring, maintaining, and monitoring internal security controls to prevent, detect, and respond to cyber threats. Key Responsibilities
Manage, coordinate, and implement the latest security best practices on network devices, firewalls, servers, and workstations to ensure continuous alignment with security standards and requirements.
Partner with the IT Infrastructure Manager to establish and maintain a system for ensuring that security policies are met and all staff are trained and informed fully on their role in security
Evaluate the effectiveness of awareness and security training programs and make recommendations for improvement.
Analyze, research, and resolve security breaches and vulnerability issues for all implemented software and hardware platforms.
Evaluate, Prioritize, and coordinate patching.
Provide security expertise and consulting to the IT Team and CAS internal technology partners
Partner with external security advisors to evaluate security posture and review/remediate issues
Participate in team exercises to identify potential security risks and tabletop scenarios
Maintain awareness/knowledge of industry-standard security trends/benchmarks/frameworks (e.g., NIST/CISA/ISO 27001)
Perform off-hour/weekend work as required
Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:
EXPERIENCE and/or EDUCATION:
5+ years of experience in the Information Technology field
3+ years of enterprise IT security experience
Experience with the administration/use of security software (e.g., Trellix/FireEye, Tenable, Nessus, Sophos, Splunk)
Experience assessing IT infrastructure and software to identify vulnerabilities
BS/BA or equivalent training and experience
Information Security Certifications - CISSP, CISM, GIAC - strongly preferred
Hands-on experience with firewalls, network security, and VPNs - preferred
SIEM Experience - preferred
Automation Experience - Preferred

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:
EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A qualified candidate will have a combination of the following experience and/or equivalent education:
A technical degree in electrical, electronic, or mechanical engineering or related, or equivalent work experience.
Three (3) years of hands-on experience with building control systems, automation systems management, and programming, including installations and maintenance.
At least (3) three years managing technical projects.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:
Design-level understanding of Direct Digital Controls (DDC), automation programming and coding, ideally in Siemens Insight/Apogee PPCL and IEC61131-3 Structured Text.
Functional understanding of computer networking and communication protocols (Ethernet, BACnet, Modbus, RS-485).
Familiarization with Siemens Desigo BAS and RCK Controls LSS platforms is a plus

Key Responsibilities
Marketing and events support
Support renewal and acquisition marketing operations including lists, direct mail, and email management. Work with outside consultants and printers to coordinate campaigns and ensure accuracy and timely delivery of all assets. Manage email building in CMS for stewardship, renewal, and acquisition campaigns
Copy review support for email and direct mail marketing and member communications
Day of support at membership events and Members' Months (may include some weekend and evening support)
Support with membership creative asset requests and inventory
Member Program Administration
Tessitura data entry, list generation, and source code creation in support of monthly campaigns (auto-renew, installment plans, renewal, acquisition). Ensure accuracy, troubleshoot issues, and recommend workflow improvements.
Coordinate administrative tasks including meeting scheduling, notes, and action item follow-up. Support project tracking and help maintain visibility into campaign timelines and deliverables.

About the Opportunity
As part of the biodiversity science efforts embedded within the Thriving California Initiative, the California Herbarium Specimen Digitization Project will make hundreds of thousands of specimens from the California Academy of Sciences (CAS) herbarium collections available online. This project combines the efficiency of high throughput specimen imaging using conveyor belt technology to image California herbarium specimens housed at CAS. Specimen images and associated data records will then be uploaded to a community science platform for further transcription and georeferencing of label data. Afterwards, fully transcribed and georeferenced records will be imported into CAS collections database and linked to their corresponding images. Results from this project will mark a major step forward in democratizing CAS museum collections, providing equitable access to these important specimens for people (botanists, scientists, and the general public) all over the world.
Reporting to the Botany Curator, the California Herbarium Specimen Digitization Project Curatorial Assistant II will be primarily responsible for assisting in the transition of the collection from a partially imaged to fully imaged state, as well as contributing to the reorganization of the collection. The Project Curatorial Assistant II will perform important rearrangement, sorting and separating of specimens into a new, updated schema. This work will involve assisting in the development and implementation of workflows to ensure specimen organization is of the highest quality and effectiveness. The Project Curatorial Assistant II will coordinate with the Botany Curator and Collection Manager to ensure all collection organization goals are met, as well as coordinate with other collections staff in order to maximize quality control efforts and data flow efficiency.

Qualifications: A successful candidate will have the following:
A qualified person for this position has experience with biological collections (preferably botanical), taxonomy and the basic use/implementation of taxonomy, and is extremely organized and detail oriented. This person is capable of performing repetitive tasks that adhere to strict organizational requirements and should be able to think ahead to identify possible problems and develop solutions in a collaborative and communicative manner.
Experience and/or Education:
Undergraduate degree required
Experience with biological collections required (botanical preferred)
Knowledge of taxonomy and the use/implementation of biological classification (botanical preferred)
Experience and/or past participation in large scale projects that require a large amount of detailed preparation

Leadership & Strategy (20%)
● Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising strategy

The Steinhart Team is integral to the living collections at the Academy. This team cares for mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, invertebrates, freshwater fish, marine fish, and plants.
