The Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW), Northern Region has an exciting opportunity for an independent and highly motivated EnvironmentalScientist to work within the Coastal Fisheries Program. Under the direction of the Senior EnvironmentalScientist (Supervisory), this position performs field research, data collection, data entry, data quality assurance and control, analysis, and report writing for fisheries investigations in the Trinity River basin and Department hatcheries. The position is part of the Departments Trinity River Project and involves coordination with other members of the Project and other agency or Tribal partners. This position offers the opportunity to work in remote wilderness areas of the Trinity River Basin. This position will actively participate in monitoring some of California's most iconic salmon species including spring and fall Chinook and Coho Salmon. Incumbent will actively participate in sourcing natural area coho salmon broodstock for Trinity River Hatchery. Incumbent will represent the Department in dealings with local, State and Federal governmental agencies, Tribal partners, conservation groups and private landowners. Area of geographic responsibility includes all nine Northern California counties that make up the Northern Region, however duties will be largely focused in Trinity County. Contacts made in the course of this work are highly sensitive and involve a wide degree of interests. The level of consequence of error in applying the best available scientific knowledge, technical information, and policy may have highly significant and adverse consequences for private landowners, various governments, the public, the Department, Tribal partners, and trust resources, among others.

Working Conditions
Ability to use a computer and standard word processing software. This is a field-oriented position that will be working in temperature extremes (25 -105 F), working in and around flowing water using wet/dry suits in rugged and remote areas. Use of 4-wheel drive and all-terrain vehicles, rafts, fisheries sampling equipment such as backpack electrofishers, seine nets, traps, etc. is required. The ability to lift 50 lbs. and swim 100 yds. unassisted is required. 50% of time will be spent indoors attending meetings, processing emails, phone calls, and documents; spend the other approximately 50% of time outdoors in rugged terrain, hot and freezing conditions, experiencing biting insects, and some overnight camping. Attend meetings and hearings, work with staff statewide to complete work assignments. Some travel is required. Work overtime as necessary. Required to wear a uniform as directed and in accordance with Department guidelines. Use of a state-owned vehicle for travel is required between remote facilities and field sites where public transportation is not readily available.

Under the direction of the Senior EnvironmentalScientist (SES) (Supervisory) within the PSP, the EnvironmentalScientist will conduct on-farm environmental assessments and farm inspections to ensure compliance with FSMA and the PSR, upholding the FDA approach of "educate before and while we regulate" for FSMA implementation. The incumbent must be able to be commissioned and credentialed by FDA to perform work concerning present and future environmental issues relating to food safety and must work with industry to bring production/facility sites into compliance with FSMA requirements. The incumbent will be responsible for on-farm inspections to ensure that PSR standards are met and that effective on-farm training and communication are in place. The incumbent will use a prioritized inspectional approach to conduct specific statewide inspections and procedural activities for the PSP.
The EnvironmentalScientist will be responsible for carrying out inspections and implementing the PSR in the Southern California Region. This includes, but is not limited to the counties of Los Angeles, Riverside, Orange, Imperial, San Diego, San Bernardino, and Ventura. The incumbent may be required to go to other locations throughout California as needed. Applicants may live in counties neighboring Riverside.

Department Information
The Inspection and Compliance Branch deals with a broad range of environmental, environmental health, and on-farm management issues related to protecting public health. The Branch consists of the following programs: Shipping Point Inspection Program; Produce Safety Program (PSP); State Organic Program; Direct Marketing Program; Standardization Program; Avocado Inspection Program; OCal Program; Citrus Program, and the Technical Assistance Program for Produce Safety. The Branch includes a multi-disciplined staff, including Agriculture Program Supervisors; EnvironmentalScientists; subject matter specialists; inspectors and investigators; and technical and support staff. The PSP is responsible for the implementation of the Produce Safety Rule (PSR), one of seven new regulations under FSMA.

Environmental scientist job at California State Association of Counties
Under the close supervision of the Senior EnvironmentalScientist Supervisor, the incumbent is responsible for assisting in the facilitation and administration of California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) watershed restoration and enhancement grant programs funded through a variety of opportunities in the South Coast Region.
Assists in reviewing proposals and developing and managing awarded grant agreements. Incumbent also supports efforts to monitor the success of grant-funded restoration at the project level and larger scales, including documentation ecological co-benefits arising from grant-funded restoration projects using scientifically based biological and environmental criteria.This may include research, developing and conducting surveys/studies, data collection and analysis and writing reports related to watershed restoration projects. Work at this level requires an ability to work independently.
Duties include ensuring best use of available science and development of additional protocols as needed and coordinating with CDFW headquarter staff and other entities throughout the state on these programs. Performance of specified activities requires an in-depth knowledge of ecological principles, applicable environmental laws, administrative procedures, and Department policies.
This position may be filled in the following counties: Santa Barbara County/Orange County/San Diego County.

Working Conditions

The State Water Resources Control Board's Office of Enforcement has an opening for an EnvironmentalScientist that will support efforts to assess and mitigate the impacts of the U.S. Supreme Court's 2023 decision in Sackett v. USEPA, in addition to supporting cross-program water quality-related enforcement efforts across the California. In this position within the Stormwater and Advanced Technology unit, you will also have the opportunity to help the Office of Enforcement develop tools that integrate machine learning/AI with GIS tools and remote sensing data to help identify overlooked or emerging water quality concerns and streamline the Water Boards enforcement response. The position is located at 801 K Street, 23rd Floor, Sacramento, offering excellent views above the heart of downtown next to the light rail stations and other public transportation.

The California Ocean Protection Council (OPC) is hiring an EnvironmentalScientist to advance strategic priorities related to sea level rise, marine debris, offshore wind, and other stressors to coastal resilience. The EnvironmentalScientist will work in OPC's Climate Change Program and will have a specific focus of advancing local and regional sea level rise planning and adaptation across the state through the OPC Senate Bill 1 Sea Level Rise Adaptation Grant Program. Additional areas of focus include marine debris, offshore wind, and other coastal resilience stressors as needs emerge.
The EnvironmentalScientist will be responsible for collaborating with other OPC staff, state and federal regulatory agencies, California Native American tribes, academic scientists, non-profits, community representatives, and others, on topics pertaining to sea level rise planning and adaptation, marine debris, offshore wind, and other coastal resilience stressors. The EnvironmentalScientist will also be responsible for grant and contract management including developing scopes of work and budgets, tracking deliverables, and coordinating with grantees. Overall, this role will be responsible for supporting implementation of OPC's mission and California Natural Resources Agency's (CNRA) policy initiatives, which include embedding equity and environmental justice into programs and actions to support statewide efforts related to coastal resilience.

The EnvironmentalScientist will perform the following duties:
* Oversee the collection, entry, and maintenance of pesticide use reports for pesticides applied by schoolsite employees and businesses. Act as the data steward of this information.
* Use and write unique SQL queries in order to answer questions about school pesticide use patterns independently or as asked by scientific or executive staff and/or the public. Use data analysis and visualizations to discover new avenues of inquest. Improve compliance with the reporting requirements and the accuracy of the data.
* Assist in developing clear, concise, and compelling outreach and training materials for various audiences (licensed contractors, K-12 school staff, and childcare workers). Work with experts in the Department, other governmental agencies, academia, and private industry in the development of training materials to ensure those using pesticides at schoolsites understand IPM/SPM concepts and the basics of the safe use of pesticides in relation to children's health and the unique nature of schoolsites.
* Respond to phone and email questions from the public in a timely manner. Support schoolsite staff and contractors in complying with HSA requirements.

The EnvironmentalScientist (ES) assists in a variety of responsible professional scientific office and field work. Under the general direction of the Monitoring Assessment and Research Unit Supervisor (Senior EnvironmentalScientist), the incumbent will conduct water, sediment, physical habitat sampling, sample analysis, data analysis, reporting, and research for surface waters in the San Diego Region. Consistent with good customer service practices and the goals of the Water Boards' Strategic Plan and the San Diego Water Board's Practical Vision. The incumbent is expected to be courteous and provide timely responses to internal and external customers, to follow through on commitments, and to solicit and consider internal and external customer input when completing work assignments. The position location is 2375 Northside Drive, Suite 100, San Diego, CA 92108.
Duties:
Conduct water, sediment, physical habitat, and biological organism monitoring, analysis, and reporting for various surface water throughout the San Diego Region using sound scientific methods in accordance with State of California Standard Operating Procedures. Work will require, in accordance with health and safety practices and regulations, hiking long distances over uneven terrain in inclement weather, wading in shallow waters, assisting with boat operations, working in areas with hazardous organisms, and driving on rough roads for extended distances. Manage and manipulate data, produce maps, analyze results, and prepare reports using Geographic Information System and statistical software. Provide scientific review and interpretation of technical reports and ecological considerations related to monitoring data for various programs. Use data interpretation/visualization tools to analyze and evaluate water quality data and the potential effects of pollutants and pollution on water quality and beneficial uses in order to guide regulatory and non-regulatory actions to achieve environmental outcomes. Work collaboratively with other staff and regulatory agencies. Conduct data analysis as part of supporting documentation for San Diego Water Board review or adoption. Provide written and verbal recommendation to staff and Board members for projects based on a review of monitoring data for discharges and receiving waters.

Fuels management and fire resiliency are statewide priorities. The increase in the frequency and magnitude of fires throughout the state is not only a concern for California's residents, but for our wildlands and biological resources as well. The California Department of Fish and Wildlife (CDFW) has an open position which will participate in statewide policy issues where fire and biological resource protection overlap.
We want you to join our small team within the Habitat Conservation Planning Branch (Branch) located in West Sacramento. Our team works on timber harvesting and fire resiliency policy for CDFW and supports a larger, statewide program of dedicated scientists. Your focus will be fire resiliency policy.
Here are some things that you will do:
* Provide fire policy and internal technical guidance support within the Timberland Conservation and Fire Resiliency Program (Program)
* Create guidance and support CDFW Regional Staff to review fire resiliency projects, including the Governor's March 1, 2025 State of Emergency for fuels reduction projects
* Participating in internal and external working groups, including Program and Branch working groups
* Collaborate on fire resiliency activities across CDFW programs and Regions, including working with other CDFW programs to incorporate the impacts of fire into biological resources planning, permitting, monitoring, and restoration
* Analyze new legislative bills pertaining to fire and biological resources
* Participate in Program strategic planning and goal setting

This position will implement environmental review and permitting and be responsible for preparing, tracking, reviewing, editing, and commenting on complex Lake and Streambed Alteration Agreements (LSAAs), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) documents, California Endangered Species Act (CESA) permits, and related documents in the Bay Area, primarily within beautiful Napa County. This position will have the opportunity to independently identify problems, develop courses of action, implement and help develop emerging conservation strategies and mitigation programs, and must have excellent communication and organizational skills. A high degree of personal initiative is expected, including applying the best available technical information in writing and presentations to provide significant positive consequences for the public, CDFW, and trust resources.
